SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego Mesa College announced Friday the opening of its on-campus support center for current and former foster youth. The Fostering Academic Success and Transitions Center opened Thursday, coinciding with Mesa College's first week of classes in the fall 2019 semester. The FAST Center offers services such as tutoring, computer access and a food pantry and will serve as a gathering space for youth who have gone through the foster care system."The number one goal we had in creating this program was to make it extremely difficult to NOT be successful," FAST Scholars Program Coordinator Sade Burrell said. "The center is a place for students to get the resources they need, whether that includes counseling, tutoring, food, child care, emergency housing and any other need unique to their situation."Mesa College is the first community college in San Diego County to open an on-campus support center for students in the foster system. Currently, only about one-in-10 foster youth graduate from college and one-third of former foster youth are homeless by age 25. College officials hope the FAST Center will help quell those numbers for students in San Diego."What this center does is say, we see our foster youth. We see their experiences. We see the unique contributions that they bring to the campus; that we understand the many challenges or systemic barriers that are often placed in their way," said Ashanti Hands, the college's vice president of student services. "The message we want our students to hear is: Bring your full self."The FAST Center will be open 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Thursday and from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Fridays. The FAST Center can be reached at 619-388- 5895. 1724

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego Gas & Electric officials announced a campaign Wednesday to publicize job openings and recruit as many local candidates as possible to support the region's ongoing economic recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic.SDG&E has continued hiring new employees amid the pandemic, not just to fill positions that have opened up due to attrition, but also because the company and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) 465 adopted a joint plan earlier this year for new multi-year hiring, training and apprenticeship programs. These programs are designed to help develop a highly specialized and skilled workforce to complete critical infrastructure projects needed to enhance wildfire safety, upgrade natural gas pipelines and expand the electrical vehicle charging infrastructure needed for zero emission transportation, officials said. The latest job openings are posted at sdge.com/careers.The recruitment awareness campaign will begin on Monday with the first of a series of chats with company recruiters on SDG&E's Instagram channel. Chats will occur through the end of the month, with each session featuring a human resources representative specializing in particular areas of recruitment. The HR representatives will also offer interview and resume tips. The recruiting chats will occur Monday at noon for entry level gas and electric workers, June 22 for call center representatives, June 25 for careers in the energy field and June 29 for a college recruiting team chat.In addition to social media outreach, SDG&E will be reaching out to community-based organizations to help publicize its openings. The utility is also working with local community leaders and elected officials to amplify awareness of these opportunities.Over the next three years, SDG&E plans to hire nearly 150 entry-level positions, while investing in six line apprenticeship classes, six line assistant classes, three electrician assistant classes and specialized training for welding and other high-skilled trades. Officials said the plan would result in the hiring or significant "upskilling" of 400 to 500 positions. 2160

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego County public health officials Sunday reported 3,493 COVID-19 infections as of Saturday and no new deaths, bringing the county's total to 126,465 cases and the death toll remaining at 1,280.Prior to Sunday's report, a record 3,611 COVID-19 infections were reported Friday. The cases surpassed the previous record set one week ago -- 2,867 last Friday -- by 744 new cases.Saturday's total marks the second time the number of daily infections has surpassed 3,000 as well as the 19th consecutive day with more than 1,000 cases and the 12th day overall with more than 2,000 new cases. The top four-highest daily cases have all occurred in the past week, with Wednesday's 2,807 cases, Thursday's 2,604, Friday's 3,611, and Saturday's 3,493.The county on Sunday reported 1,264 hospitalizations of COVID-19 patients and an additional 320 COVID-19 patients in ICUs.There were seven new outbreaks reported, which brings the total number of outbreaks within the last seven days to 40.On Friday, an appeals court stayed a judge's decision to halt enforcement of COVID-19 restrictions against San Diego County restaurants, meaning eateries must again abide by the state's regional stay-at-home order, at least for now.Lawyers for the state filed the emergency challenge to San Diego Superior Court Judge Joel R. Wohlfeil's preliminary injunction, which was issued Wednesday in a lawsuit filed by two San Diego strip clubs Wohlfeil ultimately ruled could remain open.Wohlfeil's ruling also encompassed all restaurants in the county and all businesses that provide "restaurant service."Three justices from the Fourth District Court of Appeals, District One, read and considered the order and stayed the injunction "pending further order of this court." The court ordered any oppositions to the state's filing to be submitted by noon Wednesday, according to an appeals court docket.Lawyers from the state argued that Wohlfeil overreached in his ruling, as no restaurants were parties in the suit initially filed in October by Cheetahs Gentleman's Club and Pacers Showgirls International.County supervisors met in closed session Friday to appeal the ruling made by Wohlfeil Wednesday."The board voted to appeal the order," said County Supervisor Greg Cox. "But the board directed county counsel to only argue that the order is incorrect as it relates to the continued operation of strip clubs and the allowance of indoor dining.""We support outdoor dining with appropriate safety protocols that have been previously established. We remind everyone that the virus is still out there," Cox said.Supervisor Nathan Fletcher concurred."I vehemently disagree with the recent judicial decision allowing strip clubs and all restaurant activities to resume, and I support appealing the entirety of the recent court ruling," he said. "It is a positive step that our board voted unanimously to join the state in the appeal as it relates to strip clubs and indoor dining."In the San Joaquin Valley, ICU beds are said to also be full. In Greater Sacramento, the estimate is 14.5% of ICU beds available; in the Bay Area, it's 12.8%.Only Northern California remains outside the Gov. Gavin Newsom-directed stay-at-home order with 21% of ICU beds available. That order applies to regions with fewer than 15% ICU beds remaining. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has now approved a vaccine developed by Moderna to join the 28,275 Pfizer vaccines already in the region available for civilian acute health care workers.San Diego County is home to 82,623 health care workers toiling in hospital or psychiatric facilities, 39,755 of whom are considered "highest risk" and will first receive vaccines. The 28,000-plus vaccines will cover about 72% of those slated to be inoculated until more vaccines arrive in California. 3820

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - SDCCU Stadium in Mission Valley was added to the 30th annual list of the top 10 endangered landmarks and cultural landscapes in San Diego released Tuesday by the Save Our Heritage Organisation.SOHO called the facility -- known until recently as Qualcomm Stadium -- "one of the few mid-century designed, multi-purpose stadiums" to remain standing in the United States."Innovative design features include the pre-cast concrete, pre-wired light towers and spiral concrete pedestrian ramps," according to SOHO. "The novel form of the stadium -- eight concentric circles -- provides excellent sight lines."While current proposals for the site include knocking the stadium down, SOHO urged city leaders to adapt the structure for future uses like college football or soccer games.SOHO, which advocates for maintaining San Diego's historical buildings and sites, as well as unique architectural styles, also criticized the city for continuing to ignore Presidio Park, which it described as "a decaying and unkempt embarrassment," and Balboa Park, where many of the major buildings are behind in their maintenance needs.Others on the list are: 1166

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Police searched Thursday for a hit-and-run driver who ran a red light at a Mission Valley intersection and slammed into another car, seriously injuring it's 60-year-old driver. The crash was reported shortly before 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at the intersection of Friars and Frazee roads, San Diego police Officer Robert Heims said.A 60-year-old woman was driving a 2007 Lexus sedan southbound on Frazee Road when a man driving a blue Ford pickup truck westbound on Friars Road ran a red light at Frazee and crashed into the driver's side of the Lexus, Heims said. The pickup driver kept driving, then pulled over a short distance away before he got out and ran away, the officer said. No detailed description of the driver was immediately available. The victim was taken to a hospital for treatment of multiple fractures, which were not believed to be life-threatening, Heims said.Anyone with information about the crash is asked to call SDPD's traffic division at 858-495-7800 or Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477. 1030
