LOS ANGELES (AP) — Two young sisters missing from their Northern California home since Friday afternoon were found alive Sunday following a massive search that included helicopters and tracking dogs.Leia Carrico, 8, and Caroline Carrico, 5, were found "safe and sound" on Sunday morning by a fire captain and firefighter who had followed the girls' boot tracks, Humboldt County Sheriff William Honsal said."This is an absolute miracle," he said.Though the girls were dehydrated and cold, they were uninjured and "in good spirits," Honsal said.He said the girls were trained in outdoor survival through their local 4-H club and that authorities believed that helped them. They also were wearing boots and had eaten granola bars at some point while they were missing, he said."To have a positive outcome like this is just absolutely amazing," Honsal said.Using helicopters and tracking dogs, dozens of police and rescue personnel combed a vast and rugged rural area in the frantic search for the sisters.The girls had last been seen around 2:30 p.m. Friday outside their home in Benbow, a small community about 200 miles (320 kilometers) northwest of Sacramento.The searchers included National Guard members from Fresno and the U.S. Coast Guard, which provided one of its helicopters on top of a Black Hawk helicopter also being used.Rescuers were hopeful about finding the girls Saturday after they came across prints from the girls' rubber boots and wrappers from the granola bars, Lt. LOS ANGELES (AP) — One of the deadliest accidents in recent U.S. maritime history was the fault of the owners of a dive boat whose lack of oversight resulted in a fire that swept through the vessel and killed all 34 people in their bunks below deck. The National Transportation Safety Board says Tuesday the Conception's captain failed to post a roving night watchman aboard the Southern California scuba dive vessel, which allowed the fire to quickly spread and trap the 33 passengers and one crew member. LOS ANGELES (AP) — Scientists say earthquakes that hammered the Southern California desert last summer involved ruptures on a web of interconnected faults and increased strain on a major nearby fault that has begun to slowly move.Research published Thursday in the journal Science says the earthquake sequence ended a few miles from the Garlock Fault, which runs 185 miles (300 kilometers) from the San Andreas Fault to Death Valley.The fault has been relatively quiet for 500 years but now has begun to creep.The quakes began July 4 near Ridgecrest, about 120 miles (190 kilometers) north of Los Angeles.A magnitude 6.4 foreshock was followed by a 7.1 mainshock and 100,000-plus aftershocks.The study was conducted by geophysicists from California Institute of Technology and NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory. 818

She was rescued by a Californian Olympian in South Korea - and will soon be available for adoption in San Diego County. Snowboarder Maddie mastro rescued Jadu. Mastro is an animal activist and knew the dog meat trade is big business in Korea, so she changed her flight and flew on a dog-friendly carrier to LAX.  430

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The son of Lisa Marie Presley has died. He was 27.Presley's representative Roger Widynowski said in a statement Sunday to The Associated Press that she was "heartbroken" after learning about the death of her son Benjamin Keough. TMZ reports that Keough died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound Sunday in Calabasas, California.He is the grandson of the late Elvis Presley. Lisa shared Benjamin with her ex-husband Danny Keough.Keough is also survived by his sister, actress Riley Keough. 513
