SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- While face masks are required for everyone at San Diego International Airport, Southwest Airlines is taking it a step further.The airline said they are now requiring all passengers to don a face mask for the safety of crew members and other travelers.Southwest’s policy, which took effect Monday, has one exception -- children under the age of 2 will not have to wear a face covering.In a statement, Southwest said, in part: “If a customer is unable to wear a face covering or mask for any reason, Southwest regrets that will be unable to transport the individual. In those cases, Southwest hopes the customer will allow them to welcome them onboard in the future, if public health guidance, or other safety related circumstances regarding face coverings changes.”Before this, Southwest had already stepped up the cleaning and disinfecting of their planes. The airline is also booking a limited number of people on board.They’re also using HEPA air filters to circulate air through the cabin on every flight. SAN DIEGO (KGTV)-- A San Diego couple was stuck in Ecuador after the country canceled all travel due to the Coronavirus. After several days of travel, the couple is finally back in their home. A few days ago, Albert "Ace" Elliott was not sure if he and his wife Mindy would ever make it back to their Ocean Beach home. "Without any warning at all, we hear that Ecuador has closed down the country," Elliott said. "No bus travel, no plane travel." For the last ten years, the couple has spent three months of the year in a small surf town in Ecuador. The Elliotts were supposed to fly back on March 31, 2020. But with the pandemic situation, they were stuck. Their flights and back-up flights were all canceled. They called the United States Embassy to see if they could somehow make it home. On Thursday, they were told to leave the next morning. The problem? Ecuador now has a 2 pm to 5 am curfew. Streets and homes are being sprayed down twice a day. Transportation is limited in their rural town. "Ecuador is going after this thing very aggressively. They're not messing around," Elliott said. At 5:01 am Friday, March 27, 2020, they jumped in a taxi. Four hours later, they made it to the airport. "Whether we are on the plane or not, it's just, show up and hope kind of," Elliott said. "So we go up, and our names are on the list. So we were like, OK, we get to go into the airport."They met another American in line, who told them he showed up yesterday, but there was no plane. He became somewhat discouraged. "They said it's a 12 o'clock flight supposedly," Elliott said. "It's 11:30, and there's nothing. Everybody's just sitting around looking, and around the corner, there comes a plane. And we said, Wow! There's a plane!"They were first flown into Miami. But they had no idea how to get back home. When they asked the kiosk for options, it was either 0 to San Diego the next day or to Los Angeles in an hour. They chose the latter."We got to Los Angeles, and from there, we got a rental car and drove home," Elliott sighed. "We made it home."The relief in his voice said it all. Elliott said they were treated well in Ecuador and throughout the trip. But the uncertainty was unbearable. As a surfer, it is difficult to stay away from the beach. But Elliott said for the safety of himself and his community, he will continue to self-quarantine. "I feel pretty confident that we are OK, but we're just going to have to hang out at home again," Elliott said. "Our lives are going to be just about sitting around, but that's what you got to do." 2569

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — While enjoying a moment at the park over the weekend, a Carlsbad family was on the receiving end of an act of kindness from a stranger. The family says they are now hoping to find that person to say thank you.After months of staying at home, the family was excited to spend a day at Buccaneer Park in Oceanside. Eleven-year-old Jacobi and 12-year-old Jordan couldn’t wait to get outside.“They’re too old of the playground area, the swings and things like that,” says mom Tamara Coronado. “They look forward to the open space, the grass area, and definitely the basketball courts.”But Coronado says park officials had not yet reinstalled the basketball hoops, something the boys were looking forward to. The kids were left to make up their own games. It caught the attention of one man.“Forty-five minutes to an hour later, he came back… with a crafting reef from Dollar Tree and a very small basketball that would fit inside.”The man used a power drill to attach the wreath to a tree to form a makeshift hoop so that the boys could play basketball.“All that he asked was that we leave the wreath and the ball in place so that after we left, other families could use it,” says Coronado. “But the fact that he went out of his way like he did was, I just couldn’t believe it.”The mom says even though a lot is going on around the country, she wants others to know there are still kind people in the world. The family didn’t get the man’s name, but they’re hoping to find him to say thank you.“He may have not thought twice about it, and hasn’t thought about it since, but he really touched me and my family.” 1632
