SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Images of burning homes, helicopters and flames are now a regular occurrence in California. This summer, that wildfire threat became real for the Del Cerro community.“We could hear the exploding palm trees, we could smell the toxic, frightening smoke," remembers Glenn Thomas, Vice Chair of Friends of Del Cerro. The group wanted to do something to pay back firefighters for all they do for the community. They wanted to know what the department needs to help firefighters do their job better. “We believe you find out what people want and you give it to them!” said Thomas.Friends of Del Cerro teamed up with the San Diego Fire Rescue Foundation to make something happen. What the department needs, Thomas learned, is more wildland firefighting hand tools. While these tools are currently on brush trucks, the department wants them on every engine.“There are so many more vegetation fires, and they grow so much bigger now," said Deputy Chief Steve Wright. “Something we needed that’s going to be a force-multiplier on vegetation fires that we didn’t have the immediate budget for."The group plans to raise ,000 for the tools and is halfway there thanks to a generous donation from the Padres. If you'd like to help, donate here. 1261

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Looking for a summer job? The City of San Diego is hoping to fill 46 positions at city pools. According to the city, all 46 lifeguard and pool management positions are available at 13 different facilities. Anyone interested has to attend an initial tryout to assess basic swimming skills and qualify to enroll in the city’s lifeguard training program. RELATED: State offers money to help boost college savings accounts Tryouts are being held Tuesday, March 19 and Thursday, March 21, 2019, at the Tierrasanta Pool from 5 – 7 p.m. and Tuesday, March 26, 2019 at Vista Terrace Pool in San Ysidro from 9 – 10 a.m.Those who pass will need to attend a week-long lifeguard training program. The course teaches safety, first aid and lifesaving procedures. The program costs 1 and scholarships are available, the city says. Participants who graduate the program will receive American Red Cross Lifeguard Training and Title 22 First Air certifications and will qualify to work as a lifeguard at city pools. RELATED: Dual enrollment helping students cut tuition costs“With summer fast approaching, it is important City pool facilities are fully staffed to ensure the public has access to safe swimming and recreational opportunities,” said Don Crockett, District Manager for the City of San Diego Aquatics Division. “Filling these lifeguard and pool manager positions will also allow the City to offer more swimming programs for children and adults including water aerobics, infant swimming and drowning prevention classes.”Anyone interested in participating in the tryouts will need to sign up first. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — MiraCosta College is expanding upon a state promise to help make community college more affordable.MiraCosta College announced Tuesday plans to offer free tuition for all first-time college students for the first two years of classes at the campus. Part of the MiraCosta Promise, the plan would be available for all first-time students starting in fall 2019 who are enrolled in at least 12 units per semester.Students must also file a free application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) or a California Dream Act (CADAA) application.RELATED: Cost of college: What parents and students can expect to pay for admissionThe waiver is dependent upon the passage of Assembly Bill 2, which expands the California College Promise program. Former Gov. "Whether you are looking to transfer to a four-year college or university or looking for the kind of training that will help you succeed in a new career, MiraCosta College is there for you."Assmebly Bill 2 is still working its way through California's legislature.Visit MiraCosta College's website for more information. 1400

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - If the flood of fellow travelers doesn't keep you close to home this Memorial Day weekend, perhaps the price at the pump will.Gasoline prices have climbed 12 cents over the past two weeks to bring the national average to about .93 per gallon before the Memorial Day weekend. It's the highest since Memorial Day 2014 when the average hit .65 a gallon, according to AAA.In California — one of 14 states above a gallon — drivers will have it the worst in the U.S. with an average of .71 a gallon.GAS PRICE MAP: Find the cheapest gasoline near you and around San DiegoSan Diego's local prices mimic the state's trend. A year ago the average for a gallon of gas in the county was about .03, compared to about .73 a gallon today. For the week ending on May 11, the Energy Information Administration (EIA) reported gas stocks fell by about 200,000 barrels to 29.7 million barrels. However, inventory levels are 600,000 stronger than this time last year. Imports increased by 50,000 barrels to 117,000 barrels last week, EIA reports.RELATED: Memorial Day weekend to see the most travelers in last 12 yearsDespite this, gas prices don't look like they'll put a dent in weekend travel. This year, AAA expects more than 41.5 million travelers to be out for Memorial Day weekend, a five percent jump from last year. Of that, about 36.6 million people will be on the roads. And drivers may need to fill up more often on top of that. Transportation analytics company INRIX predicts travel delays could be up to three times longer than normal in some areas of the country.BEFORE YOU HEAD OUT: Check updated San Diego traffic conditionsAnd as the summer rolls in, gasoline prices may not look back."Compared to an average of the last three Memorial Day weekends, pump prices are nearly 50 cents more expensive and climbing," Jeanette Casselano, an AAA spokesperson, said. "Trends are indicating that this summer is likely to bring the national average to at least /gallon." 2040

Another 32 percent said they plan to vote "no," and 17 percent were not sure how they would vote yet. If passed, Proposition 13 would authorize the state to issue billion in bonds for repairs, construction, and modernization at public preschools, K-12 schools, community colleges, and universities.RELATED: Everything you need to know about Proposition 13Under the bond, billion would be used for preschool and K-12 schools, billion will go to universities, and billion will be used for community colleges. In total, the California Legislative Analyst says the state would pay billion in total, after billion in interest, over 35 years.
