SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego restaurants are taking extra precautions, and going out of their way to care for the most vulnerable neighbors during the stay at home order.Victor Lopez, owner of El Pollo Grill, said he's delivering free meals to seniors in need. "Today we're actually going to send 10 more right now," Lopez said. They've served about 90 customers in three days. The hit right now is 30 percent, but Lopez said the 37 year old business is focused on community. Across town, D.Z. Akin's is also worried about their customers, "we try between every customer to sanitize ourselves, sanitize the pens, sanitize the counters." Son of the founders, Elan Akin, said he often sees an older crowd.Customers, like Philip McCabe, say they normally see more people. The lunch rush Wednesday mean about 7 people standing in the deli with lots of space in between. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Several University Heights residents are searching for a parrot they say flew out of their home and hasn’t been seen since. According to the owners, the 18-year-old parrot named Lily flew out of their home on Rhode Island Street on January 7. According to a Lily’s owners, the bird can fly but isn’t used to it. The parrot has a blue chest and head and the rest of her body is green. The search is becoming more and more dire, according to Lily’s owners. "It really feels very impossible,” said Mary Beth Cruden. On top of Lily not having food and water, nights have been cold across the county. "Really devastated about it. I loved the bird, the bird loved me,” William Smith told 10News. Lily’s empty cage now sits at the end of the driveway. Bird experts say if she smells something familiar she may come home. The family is hoping someone spots their beloved pet. "I would expect her to come walking up that street on her little two feet, she's practically a human being,” Smith said. Smith says if you spot Lily on the ground, hold your fingers close to her chest and she should hop on. Then hold on tight. The pair is offering a 0 reward to anyone who returns Lily. 1203

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Schools in San Diego County are readying emergency plans in case the coronavirus prompts schools closures like the ones in Washington state.At least a dozen schools in the greater Seattle area were closed Monday after health officials confirmed at least six deaths linked to the virus in that state.The San Diego Unified School District said in addition to cleaning efforts by its custodial staff, it was lining up outside contractors who could “provide large-scale deep-cleaning of classrooms or entire schools should it become necessary.”The County Office of Education said it planned to distribute a template pandemic response plan to all 42 districts soon with guidance on everything from prevention to post-outbreak recovery.“We’re lucky we don’t have any cases of community spread in San Diego County, so we have some time,” said COE spokeswoman Music Watson. “We’re using that time to think through, if we need to close schools, what about e-learning? What about community kitchens?”The Office of Education is encouraging districts to consider a range of “distance learning” options, in the event of longer-term school closures. Those options include issuing photocopies of lesson plans, posting recorded lessons online, and conducting teacher “check-ins” and tutorials by phone or web conferencing.Several districts have sent letters home to parents in recent days encouraging discussions about hygiene and handwashing, including Sweetwater Union High School District and Chula Vista Elementary School District.“We get that people are a little scared and we want to make sure we do as much as we can,” said CVESD spokesman Anthony Millican.Millican said local district have experience responding to viral outbreaks. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego Police released Thursday the name of a man who was shot and died after reportedly breaking in to a San Carlos home. Hollis Forman, 38, entered the home in the 6300 block of Lake Shore Drive July 16 and began fighting with the 54-year-old homeowner, police said. The homeowner’s wife called 911 as her husband confronted the man. Police said the homeowner’s 20-year-old son grabbed a gun and shot Forman, who ran out the back door and fell into the pool.
