(KGTV) - Not many people have a Coronado bridge story like Bertha Loaiza.Loaiza was 3-years-old in August of 1985 when her mother jumped from the 246-foot tall bridge holding her.The mother and daughter were unconscious when fisherman pulled them out of the harbor. 24-year-old Angelica Medina never took another breath, but responders were able to resuscitate Bertha.“Honestly it’s hard for even me to believe,” said Loaiza, who suffered a broken hip and cataracts in her right eye from the incident, “My memories blocked out — but I’m good now.’Growing up, her family told her that her mother died in a car accident, but she figured out the real story as a teenager after watching an old news clip.“It makes me sad she didn’t have the resources that are available to everybody today,” said Loaiza.Now 36, Loaiza says she was angry at her mom when she first found out. Now, she wants to do something positive in her mom’s legacy.“The ledge is not high enough,” said Loaiza, “We need to put more barriers.”Loaiza is a member of the Coronado Bridge Collaborative and is among those stumping for suicide barriers along the Coronado bridge.Caltrans debuted several designs for the barriers earlier this year, but funding and approval from agencies involved remain the biggest hindrances. Loaiza knows it’s difficult to stop someone from harming themselves, but she believes making it harder for those that want to will have an impact.“I just want to know that I’ll have saved one life,” said Loiza, “And it will all be worth it."If you or a loved are contemplating suicide, call the suicide helpline number at (888-724-7240).  1656

A 13-year-old middle school student from Elkhorn, Nebraska was arrested on Thursday on suspicion of terroristic threats. According to a release, the student made non-specific threats on a national social media gaming website on Wednesday. After he was questioned Wednesday, he made similar non-specific threats again on Thursday on a different social media platform. The student was booked in the Douglas County Youth Center. Because of his age, his name was not released. Elkhorn Public Schools released a statement: "On Wednesday, law enforcement investigated an Elkhorn Valley View Middle School student regarding a nonspecific threat made on a national social media gaming website. Elkhorn Public Schools administration cooperated fully with local law enforcement throughout the investigation.  Elkhorn Public Schools takes all threats seriously, and in this situation, at no time did we feel students were in immediate danger. Parents of the student affected received an email on Wednesday afternoon, informing them of the situation." Captain Wayne Hudson with the Douglas County Sheriff's Office said deputies will be patrolling schools more closely in upcoming days given the alleged threats. Hudson says law enforcement agencies across the nation are not taking any potential copycat shooting threats lightly and encourage people to report any suspicious activity. "The whole thing of, if you hear something, say something — we need that information. As we saw in Florida, it seems several kids had information," Hudson said. "They knew this individual had made certain comments and certain threats — especially kids. You're going to find probably some of your most critical information is coming from students and parents. Students are the first line at school and know what's going on." 1884

(KGTV) — U.S. Navy veteran Michael White has been freed by Iran and left the country on Swiss government aircraft.White was jailed in Iran in 2018 while visiting a woman he had met online and fallen in love with, the Associated Press reported. He was sentenced to 10 years in prison after being convicted of insulting Iran's supreme leader and posting private information online.Secretary of State Mike Pompeo issued a statement, reading in part that White would be reunited with his family."He is now on his way back to the United States, where we look forward to reuniting him with his family. I commend U.S. Special Representative for Iran Brian Hook for negotiating Mr. White’s release with the Iranians. According to family spokesperson Jonathan Franks, White went to Iran to see a woman described as his girlfriend and he had booked a July 27, 2019, flight back home to San Diego on United Arab Emirates.White's mom filed a missing person report with the State Department after he didn't board the flight.White worked as a cook in the U.S. Navy and left the service about a decade ago. A 25-year-old California woman is accused of trying to flush her newborn baby down a toilet at a fast food restaurant where she was employed, KRON-TV reported. Sarah Lockner is held on an million bail and faces charges of attempted murder and inflicting great bodily harm to a child.According to an account of the incident given to KRON, Lockner, who is a cashier at a McDonald's in Redwood City, California, went to the restroom several times on Sept. 4, complaining of stomach pains. When a co-worker checked on Lockner in the restroom, they found blood on the floor. 596
