HARLEM, Manhattan — A 100-year-old woman in Harlem is serious about filling out the census. Heading to the streets with a bullhorn this week to celebrate her birthday, Katherine Nelms Nichson bellowed to her neighborhood to fill out the census.“Be counted in the census," she said at the corner of Lenox Avenue and 135th Street. "Come up off your butt."The deadline is weeks away. Officials around the country are worried the shortened timeline, impacted by the COVID-19 outbreak this year, will mean fewer responses than normal. Senator Brian Benjamin of Harlem said it’s not just on Nichson's birthday, but every day she's a political powerhouse.Julie Menin, the director of NYC Census 2020, said Nichson’s message is especially critical right now because New York City is facing an economic crisis.As of Friday, New York City had a response rate of 59.3 percent compared to the nationwide rate of 65.7 percent.The census is a survey required by the U.S. Constitution. It takes just 10 minutes to fill out and can be done online.Why is it so important? Its results are used to determine how much money municipalities gets from Washington for everything from housing to hospitals, roads, bridges, and schools. Harvard University has announced plans to bring back up to 40 percent of their student body back to campus this fall.They also stated all course instruction at the undergraduate and graduate level will be delivered online, whether or not students are on campus. The fall semester begins on September 2 at Harvard.Those being allowed back to campus are all first-year students and those who must be on campus to progress academically. “This will enable first-year students to benefit from a supported transition to college-level academic work and to begin to build their Harvard relationships with faculty and peers,” the statement read.Harvard said this is only for the fall semester and if current restrictions are in place next year, their priority would be to bring back graduating seniors for their last semester on campus.Those coming back to campus will be tested for COVID-19 once they arrive, and then re-tested every three days while they are on campus.“Without a vaccine or effective clinical treatments for the virus, we know that no choice that reopens the campus is without risk. That said, we have worked closely with leading epidemiologists and medical experts to define an approach that we believe will protect the health and safety of our community, while also protecting our academic enterprise and providing students with the conditions they need to be successful academically,” read an online statement from University President Larry Bacow, FAS Edgerley Family Dean Claudine Gay, and Danoff Dean of the College Rakesh Khurana.The university’s statement says tuition for this upcoming school year will remain unchanged, at ,653.First-year students have until July 24 to defer their enrollment, and Harvard is making advisers available for older students considering a leave of absence. 1816

The good Samaritan driver said he saw the thief take off from the parking lot in a suburb of Cincinnati and told the dad to get in his car.Then they chased him together."Oh my god, he stole my truck! My kids are in the truck!" a man who identified himself as Courtney Wells yelled in a 911 call. "I'm in the car with somebody. We're chasing him. He stole my kids! Please, I got three kids in that car."The dispatcher asked Wells to calm down and tell him where they were driving. After a few moments, Wells came to a shocking realization."Did he turn? Oh my god, I think we lost him," Wells cried.The driver told the 911 dispatcher that he just happened to be there when the thief took off."I saw what happened so I said, 'Come on!"The thief sped off and crossed the center line several times trying to elude them, police said."We were so close. We were right there ... Oh, god, he was flying," the driver said on the 911 call.The suspect got away from them, but all ended well when the children - two 4-year-olds and a 1-year-old - were found safe and the suspect was arrested, police said.Someone claiming to be the father later posted a Facebook message that thanked the driver who helped him. He mentioned that the driver is wanted by police."Thankyu big s/o for all the help. He chasin this car down wit 5 warrants ... God was watching ova my babies," the post said.Police said 33-year-old Howard Mullis stole the SUV just before 2 p.m. after the father went in the Pit Stop convenience store. Police said he left the engine running with the three kids in the backseat.Mullis had been hanging around outside the store for hours, said an onlooker."The guy had been sitting right in front of this trash can all morning long, so I guess he was just waiting on somebody to pull up," said Keith Lipscomb.Another man said he heard the commotion in the parking lot. He got choked up talking about it."I heard somebody hollering and screaming that they are stealing my car and they have my kids in the car," said Dennis Cooke. "You got me kind of teary-eyed. Grand Canyon’s entire men’s basketball team has been placed in quarantine after four players and two support staff members tested positive for COVID-19.All 14 players and two student managers are in quarantine at a designated on-campus residence hall for the next two weeks.Players began reporting for voluntary individual workouts last week and were placed in quarantine for 72 hours pending results of coronavirus tests and physicals. Four players who were asymptomatic tested positive at the end of the 72 hours and were placed in quarantine while contact tracing was conducted.Players who tested negative were placed in quarantine as a precaution and will be tested again.
