INDIANAPOLIS -- An abused dog that was shot and left for dead has a new lease on life after an Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department Officer and his wife, a paramedic with the Wayne Township Fire Department decided to step in and help. Officer Tim Elliott was on patrol when he came across the dog that had been shot in the face and doused in bleach. Wayne Township Fire Department Captain Mike Pruitt says Officer Elliott and his fellow officers rushed in to help and took the pup to the emergency vet to try and save him. "Still alive and wagging his tail, Tim and Tiffany couldn't let this little guy perish at the hands of a savage criminal owner," said Pruitt. Pruitt says the couple fell in love with the pup and decided to save him. The pup, who's been lovingly nicknamed "Winks,"  will need surgery to have his eye removed as well as other medical treatments from the damage his previous owner had done, The Elliott family is raising money to try to help cover those costs which are expected to exceed ,500. "Winks now has a forever home full of love and a "brother" (Gauge) to help him through this," said Captain Pruitt. In hospitals, one bacterial species is becoming increasingly tolerant to the alcohols used in hand sanitizers, according to research published Wednesday in the journal Science Translational Medicine.Globally, hospitals use isopropyl or ethyl alcohol-based disinfectants, such as hand rubs, to prevent patients from becoming sick from many germs. These are the same active ingredients found in hand sanitizers available for personal use and at schools -- but that doesn't mean people should give up on them.The bacterium Enterococcus faecium resides in our guts, but if encountered in a hospital, it can cause various complicated infections affecting the abdomen, skin, urinary tract and blood. This particular bug is a member of the Enterococci family, which ranks as the fourth and fifth leading cause of sepsis, a life-threatening bloodstream infection, in North America and Europe, respectively.Many hospital-acquired infections have decreased or been kept in check by Australia's strict hygiene practices that rely on alcohol-based hand sanitizers. Yet drug-resistant E. faecium infections have increased in Australian hospitals over time, according to the study authors.This alarming pattern prompted them to investigate whether E. faecium might be developing resistance to the alcohols used in hand rubs. 1343

In the span of less than 24 hours, Delta strengthened from a tropical storm into a power category 4 hurricane with its sights set on the Yucatan Peninsula.Moments after reporting Delta had become a major hurricane Tuesday morning, the National Hurricane Center (NHC) said that the storm had strengthened further into category 4 status. According to a reading from a Hurricane Hunter aircraft, Delta has maximum sustained winds of 130 mph, as of Tuesday at 10 p.m. CT. The storm's top winds dropped slightly from 145 MPH.The NHC says Delta will bring "extremely dangerous storm surge" and other hurricane-like conditions to the Yucatan throughout the day Tuesday before briefly making landfall on Wednesday. The Yucatan Peninsula is home to many Mexican resort towns, including Cancún and Playa del Carmen. Belize, a coastal country on the southern part of the peninsula, may also feel effects from Delta.While the NHC notes that there is "large uncertainty in track and intensity forecasts," Delta is currently expected to make landfall on the Louisiana coastline as a hurricane late in the week. Current forecasts have Delta making landfall anywhere from western Louisiana to the western Florida panhandle on early Saturday morning.Louisiana has taken the brunt of the impact of the 2020 hurricane season. INDIANAPOLIS -- Warren Township, Indiana Schools says no students or teachers were seriously injured Wednesday when pepper spray was released inside a middle school.Medical responders were called to Stonybrook Middle School and Stonybrook Intermediate Academy around 2 p.m. Wednesday for a report of more than a dozen people affected in an apparent pepper spray release.According to Warren Township Schools, a student released the pepper spray inside the building – although it was not immediately clear whether the release was accidental.A district spokesman said 15 students and two teachers were affected by the pepper spray. All were checked out and released on scene by EMS.The school was temporarily evacuated following the incident and was back to normal conditions as of 2:30 p.m., the district said.School police were reportedly examining surveillance footage to determine how the pepper spray was released. 934
