It is a common sight this time of year---Amazon delivering packages, but this time it's some of Baltimore's 4,000 employees of the company helping it deliver 2,000 so-called "boxes of smiles" to those who need them the most in the city."This includes toys, gifts, items of personal care and so and so forth," said Amazon Operations Director Preet Virdi as workers brought the gifts into the City Hall Rotunda. The need for such essentials became evident earlier this year when the city attempted to put a number on its disenfranchised citizens."We have approximately 2500 men, women and children who were experiencing an episode of homelessness at that time," said City Homeless Services Director Jerrianne Anthony. For those who have experienced life without a roof over their head, the boxes of smiles represent far more than a collection of gifts and essentials."Amazing. Amazon. The gifts. We need them. We need the Mayor's Office of Human Services, because without them, we have no hope," Sakina Ilyas told the crowd. But once she stepped out of the spotlight of this staged event, Ilyas opened up about her own experience with her family's past homelessness."It was very, very stressful especially during the holidays. No family. Nowhere to go,” said Ilyas. “The problem here in Baltimore City is lack of housing. Lack of affordable housing. There are over 17,000 abandoned houses that are just sitting there."In the meantime, just 10 days from now, on December 20, the Housing Authority of Baltimore City will no longer accept applications for public housing, citing a waiting list of 14,000 that averages seven years to deliver. While the unexpected gifts, along with a check for ,000 are appreciated, Ilyas is left pondering the obvious."More is needed, because when this is gone, the stage is set, the curtain is open, but what happens when it's over?"The city did adopt a three-year action plan on homelessness earlier this year with the goal of combining action, results and concrete steps to address the problem. 2036

John Pregulman is on a mission to ensure that those who survived the Holocaust are not forgotten. Pregulman is occupied with documenting the estimated 200,000 still-living Holocaust survivors. “Their biggest fear is that they’ll be forgotten,” Pregulman said as he was surrounded by hundreds of portraits he took of survivors taped and pinned onto four walls.Among those Pregulman has documented was Mildred Ferro, 93, who said she was age 11 when she moved to the United States. Pregulman recently visited a senior living community to capture Ferro’s picture and story.Pregulman’s became motivated when he learned that many survivors worry that their story will be forgotten in history. What started as a one-time gig, taking photos at an event outside of Chicago five years ago, has turned into almost an obsession.“I took their pictures, they shared their stores, and I just became completely enthralled with these amazing people who I expected to be sad and unable to get past what had happened, and yet they were the happiest most positive and accomplished people I had met in a very long time,” he said.In hearing their stories, Pregulman and his wife soon learned a disturbing statistic: roughly one-in-three Holocaust survivors live in poverty.“Dignity had to be the centerpiece of everything,” his wife Amy Israel Pregulman said. “They deserve that.”They’ve started a non-profit called 1407

JCPenney announced it plans on closing 154 locations nationwide this summer, with additional closures expected to be announced in the coming weeks. The company has been hemorrhaging locations in recent years as shifts in consumer habits have led customers away from legacy retailers such as JCPenney. Stores closing due to the COVID-19 have hastened the demise for companies like JCPenney. The affected stores will begin store closing sales on June 12. It will take 10 to 16 weeks to close the 154 stores. The loss of 154 locations will reduce the company’s footprint down from 850 stores nationwide. The 154 locations are spread over 38 states. “While closing stores is always an extremely difficult decision, our store optimization strategy is vital to ensuring we emerge from both Chapter 11 and the COVID-19 pandemic as a stronger retailer with greater financial flexibility to allow us to continue serving our loyal customers for decades to come,” said Jill Soltau, chief executive officer of JCPenney. “I am incredibly grateful to our talented associates for their ongoing dedication and their passion for meeting and exceeding our customers’ expectations during this difficult and uncertain time. All impacted associates will be treated with the utmost consideration and respect.” To see the impacted locations, click 1336

Immigrant rights advocates across the United States say they've seen few signs of the ICE raids that Trump administration officials had warned would begin Sunday.Does that mean officials changed their plans? Or is the operation still unfolding?A senior immigration official who has seen the operation plans told CNN the list of target cities and individuals remains the same. The official had not received any details about total arrests so far. Officials previously have said ICE agents in 10 cities would be seeking 2,000 undocumented immigrants who'd been ordered removed from the United States.A senior administration official told CNN that parts of the ICE deportation operation began on Saturday and would be expanded into other cities over the coming days."I wouldn't expect a big splash that matches the hysteria we've heard over the last several days," that official said.Such ICE operations are not unprecedented. But it's uncommon for officials to talk about them so extensively before they occur. Some advocates questioned whether the President and his administration had released details about raids simply as a scare tactic. Others cautioned that it's too soon to say."It's very quiet. Let's hope it stays that way," said Jose Mario Cabrera of the Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights of Los Angeles, speaking to CNN Sunday afternoon.Jennaya Dunlap of the Inland Coalition for Immigrant Justice in Ontario, east of Los Angeles, also said she hadn't seen signs of sweeps."The way we see it with all the rumors and hysteria, we're telling the community that ICE is always conducting operations," she said Sunday. "This is nothing new. It's a daily reality for us. "2,000 undocumented immigrants in 10 citiesThere also haven't been any confirmed reports of migrants being apprehended in Baltimore, Chicago or New York, immigrant advocacy groups in those cities told CNN.Acting US Citizenship and Immigration Services chief says he does not know details of ICE raids"For the most part, it's quiet," said Cara Yi, a spokeswoman for the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights. "We've been dispatching rapid-response teams out to meet with people who have reported ICE activity over our hotline. None have been confirmed as of yet."Most of the reports were about sightings of government vehicles, Yi said, but advocates had confirmed they were not ICE."We don't have any information that the ICE raids actually occurred," New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo told WNYC. "If he does have ICE raids, our law enforcement will not cooperate with them. I don't put it past him to actually deport people to make a political point, which would be reprehensible, but I wouldn't put it past him. But we see no evidence of it thus far."The raids are slated for Atlanta, Baltimore, Chicago, Denver, Houston, Los Angeles, Miami, New York and San Francisco, officials have said. New Orleans is also on the list, but the city 2935

It's being called the unnoticed apocalypse: The number of insects is declining rapidly and 41% of bug species face extinction, scientists say."If these massive declines continue, the ramifications are enormous," said Dave Goulson, a professor of biology at the University of Sussex in the UK and the author of a 324
