This afternoon around 3 pm, what police say appears to be a stray bullet came through one of our preschool classrooms. Thankfully, no children, teachers, or staff were injured.Our teachers immediately took the children to the chapel, locked down the campus, and called police. Officers arrived shortly after the incident and are now conducting their investigation. At this point, we don't have any information from the police on where the bullet came from but they do assure us that there is no ongoing risk. Given that the bullet fell just inside the window, it appears to have been fired at a great distance, and not be a targeted shooting, according to the police.All of our parents have been notified and are coming to pick up their children now. The school will be closed tomorrow. This year, the number of women in charge of Fortune 500 companies hit a new a record, but out of the 37 women on that list, none of them are Latina.Leaders around the country are working to change that.Tanya Ramos is the CEO at Pencils of Promise, a group working to help 100,000 children around the world receive an education.Ramos says that because we don't see many Latinas in leadership roles, it's important to seek out mentors.“I’ve had the great fortune of having remarkable mentors throughout my career and I deem my success based on how many others, others like me, other Latinas, that I’m also able to bring up through the ranks and make room at the table for,” said Ramos.Ramos recognizes it could be intimidating to ask someone to be a mentor, but she says it's unlikely someone will say no.“If you encounter someone that you really believe could provide you with valuable advice, or if they can help you think through challenges, seek them out and ask if they would be willing to chat over the phone, or grab a coffee, when it's safe to do that of course,” said Ramos.A survey by Catalyst, a nonprofit that supports creating workplaces for women, found more than 40% of Latinas don't have a mentor. Transportation officials are warning of what they call a "death spiral" if public transit does not get the federal funding it needs to stay afloat.Ridership has fallen by 90 percent since the pandemic as departments find themselves strapped for cash.“Without transit, there is no economic recovery,” said Corinne Kisner, executive director of the National Association of Transportation Officials (NACTO).The American Public Transportation Association estimates 36 million Americans relied on public transportation in 2019, with about 36 percent of that servicing essential workers, according to the advocacy group TransitCenter.“The reality is that transit agencies are in an existential crisis,” said Kisner.Once ridership dropped across the country, public transportation departments saw their revenues plummet. Beth Osborne with Transportation for America, a public advocacy group, says aside from ride fares most transit money comes from sales tax, which also took a hit when the economy shut down.“It really does have tentacles that affect so much of our economy, of our health, of recovery and getting through this,” said Osborne.In San Francisco, the revenue drop has led to Bay Area Rapid Transit dropping more than 50 percent of its service. The story is similar for most major city transit systems.“We’re really limping along and hoping Congress will approve more funding for us,” said Jim Allison, spokesman for BART. “We’re doing what we can to try and get essential workers to and from where they need to go, but beyond that, it’s not much of a service compared to what we used to provide.”The billion in CARES Act funding alleviated some woes early on, but officials estimate billion more is needed to make it through the end of the year, and right now, no package is in place.If departments don’t find an answer, NACTO says 30,000 jobs could be lost because of stalled capital improvement projects.A lacking service could also mean a life or death scenario for more than just transit departments.“We need people to get tested,” said Osborne. “In many places, they have said they will not test anyone who does not arrive in a car. They're all sold at Claire's, a store with products aimed toward girls and young women.“It's completely unacceptable to have asbestos in these products,” Katz says. “Asbestos if you inhale it or ingested it can lead to lung cancer it can lead to mesothelioma, which is cancer of the internal organs, and if you apply it over skin over time it can also increase the risk of skin cancer."Asbestos is a naturally occurring mineral that can be found in talc, a common product in many makeup products. But Katz says it's a company's responsibility to make sure the talc it uses hasn't been contaminated.“We need Claire's to remove these products from the shelves and we need them to figure out how asbestos got in their products to begin with,” Katz says. “We need Congress and the FDA to take action. We need to ban asbestos from beauty care products and makeup.”Right now, Katz and U.S. PIRG are urging us to avoid products with talc until federal laws change.It's not the first time Claire's has come under scrutiny for this. Just four months ago, Claire's pulled some items after independent lab tests found evidence of asbestos, then said its own initial testing found no problems.Regarding these latest allegations, Claire's released a statement saying,  1952
