But it's embracing drones to broaden its mission for the future.In a blog post published late Wednesday, the company revealed it has a team in Silicon Valley researching how drones could fit into its business.The move is part of a greater effort to transition into a mobility company -- one that draws upon all elements of transportation, from cars and buses to bikes and now drones."As drone adoption accelerates, we think many of our customers will want to use these devices as part of their lifestyle, whether to pursue hobbies or even as a tool for their business," wrote Adi Singh, Ford's principal drone scientist.He expects drones to one day deliver packages and perhaps even people.However, specific plans for how Ford will incorporate drones into its business and vehicles hasn't yet been determined.Although it may seem like an unlikely move for the company, Ford has shown an interest in drones since 2016. In fact, it is also the only automaker to sit on the FAA's aviation rulemaking committee.But that's not to say Ford is the only car company to express the same interest. In 2016, Mercedes-Benz pledged to invest 0 million in delivery robots and drones. It previously demoed a prototype van that launched drones from its roof to make deliveries.Before automated drones deliver goods to our homes, governments will need to be convinced they're safe and trustworthy. One hot topic is making sure law enforcement can remotely identify suspicious drones. Ford revealed in its recent blog post it has developed its own system for identifying drones, and offered it to the FAA."It's not enough for my team to just create the next big solution and create fancy drones and put them in vehicles," Singh told CNN. "We need to work toward a system where that kind of integration is scalable."  1856

Following a hand recount of ballots in Georgia, President-elect Joe Biden maintained a 12,000-vote lead over President Donald Trump. The conclusion of the recount means that Biden is the projected winner of the state and its 16 Electoral College votes, according to the Associated Press. The once Republican stronghold, Georgia went for a Democratic presidential candidate for the first time since 1992. With all 50 states now called, Biden is projected to carry 306 Electoral College votes compared to 232 for Trump.The hand recount of nearly 5 million votes stemmed from an audit required by a new state law and wasn’t in response to any suspected problems with the state’s results or an official recount request. The state has until Friday to certify the results that have been certified and submitted by the counties. The recount added an additional 5,262 ballots that had gone previously uncounted, representing roughly .1% of the overall vote total. In the recount, Trump added a net of 496 votes, coming well short of cutting into Biden's lead.Once the results are certified, the losing campaign can request a recount. 1133

Florida is once again in the crosshairs of Tropical Storm Eta as the slow-moving system meanders its way toward Florida’s Gulf Coast.On Tuesday afternoon, the National Hurricane Center issued a tropical storm warning for the Dry Tortugas, and a tropical storm watches for parts of Florida's west coast, including the Tampa area.The storm has top sustained winds of 60 mph and has been drifting off the northwest coast of Cuba since early Monday after Eta went over the Florida Keys. The tropical storm’s outer bands have been raking the Florida peninsula for days.As it turns more toward the north, Eta is forecast to remain a tropical storm until Saturday, according to the National Hurricane Center. Eta’s forecast cone does not bring the center of it over land until then, but its outer rain bands are expected to dump heavy rain in parts of Florida that could lead to flooding.Eta was the 12th named system to strike the US this hurricane season, setting a record. This hurricane season set a new record on Monday for most named systems with 29 after the formation of Theta in the eastern Atlantic.Theta marks the deepest jaunt down the Greek hurricane naming list. Theta is the seventh storm this season named after a letter in the Greek alphabet. The only other time the Greek alphabet has been used was in 2005.Eta previously struck Central America as a powerful Category 4 hurricane last week.The Atlantic hurricane season still has another three weeks to go, and it’s not unheard of for a system to develop in December if conditions are favorable, like they have been for much of 2020. 1602
