EL CAJON, Calif. (KGTV) -- El Cajon city leaders will consider the possibility of a ban on the sale of vaping products at their next meeting in November. Tuesday evening, city council leaders heard from dozens of people for and against the idea; but the issue was not on the agenda.Councilman Gary Kendrick first brought up a city-wide ban in July. Tuesday afternoon, he was joined by school leaders, doctors, health officials, and parents who all believe vaping is an epidemic targeting kids. "These people who are selling vaping devices and vaping liquids to our children are profiting from the suffering of our children," said councilman Kendrick. A member of the Cajon Valley Union School Board said vaping is rampant in children as young as elementary age. "The liquids that are being used our being promoted to our youth , having vaping devices available at a very low cost in our liquor stores or 7/11/'s for approximately a dollar is promoting to our children that they can easily have access to them," said Jill Barto. Joey Johnson works at United Smoke Shop and Vape. He says if it weren't for vaping, he'd still be smoking two packs a day. "It's astonishing how much it’s truly helped me," said Johnson. Johnson believes a ban punishes legitimate businesses and will only create a bigger black market. "Gas stations places like that don’t care, so it’s either that or people on the streets or getting THC cartridges from people on the street who don’t know what they’re doing , they’re adding stuff to it to make it “vapable” or able to smoke and that’s the people that are dying," said Johnson. At least twenty-three people across the country have died from vaping related illnesses. In San Diego County, there have been no deaths, but at least twenty-two people have been sickened. One high school student told the council that vaping is rampant in the school bathrooms."The athletic kids vape, the honors kids vape, the college prep kids vape and their parents vape and at this point, it's sad to say, I think it's become a part of high school culture," said the student. Deborah Kelly told city leaders she was outraged at the failure of government to protect children. "Flavored tobacco products taste like candy, but act as poisons and kids don't smoke marijuana, they vape it," said Kelly. The council decided more research is needed before it takes any action on a possible ban. City leaders did vote to increase suspensions and fines for businesses that sell tobacco products to minors. Under the new rules, fines start at ,500 instead of ,000. If a business has a fourth violation within a five-year period, the retailer is subject to a permanent suspension. 2692

EL CAJON (CNS and KGTV) - An East County man who admitted molesting an underage girl faces up to 10 years in state prison when he's sentenced March 27, prosecutors said.Shaun Crocker, 34, pleaded guilty Thursday at the El Cajon courthouse to two felony counts of committing a lewd act on a child for touching the unidentified victim, who was under the age of 14, inappropriately between September and November 2018.Prosecutors did not disclose the girl's exact age, nor would they confirm whether the defendant was related to sex offender Matthew Hedge, whose case drew headlines years after his conviction due to a judge's controversial decision to lift Hedge's sexually violent predator status and release him from custody without supervision.RELATED: Son of sex offender suspected of child molestation in San Diego CountyFollowing Crocker's arrest last year, a source told 10News that Crocker is Hedge's son.Hedge pleaded guilty in 1989 to molesting four children in the San Diego area and served 12 years in prison. He was committed to the sexually violent predator treatment program in 1997, but was released into outpatient treatment in 2005 in a trailer outside Donovan State Prison in Otay Mesa.His outpatient status was revoked within six weeks for violating terms of his release.After more than two years of in-patient hospital treatment, the court in October 2008 again granted Hedge's petition to be placed in outpatient treatment. (KGTV) -- New video from a nearby business shows the moments before a driver plunged into a sinkhole in El Cajon.The images seeming to tell a different story than was released by El Cajon police earlier in the week.The incident happened late Monday night on Vernon Way and Johnson Avenue. A white car became almost completely submerged in a deep sinkhole after a water main break earlier in the evening. RELATED: Sinkhole forms at El Cajon intersection, swallows car At the time police said the driver, who wasn't injured, ended up there after going around a barricade.Ken Wingert's office has surveillance cameras pointed right at the street where it happened, so out of curiosity, he took a look and says the video paints a different story than the one he first heard. "I saw the video...no that's not true," Wingert told 10News. "The police officer actually went to her window, talked to her and the car pulled a u-turn and went into the sinkhole."After the car goes down, Wingert says the video gets even more interesting. The officers can be seen walking over, but it's how they did it that has him confused.  "Why were the police not reacting so fast once the car went into the pothole? All of a sudden when the car started sinking more everybody started running towards it," he said. "To me that was a little slow on that part."On Thursday 10News made multiple attempts to talk to El Cajon police about the video. We were told that there was no one available to comment. 1537
