SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego's Maritime Museum is giving families the chance to spend the night on the seas — but stay in San Diego.The museum's "Family Overnight" program offers a stay aboard the Star of India, the oldest active sailing ship in the world. Families will embark on imaginary voyage learning about the lives and times of the India's passengers in the 19th century.Instructors will be in character and in costume, as they teach various ship-centric tasks like moving cargo and raising sails. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - SANDAG's Board of Directors passed the 3.4 million budget at their meeting on Friday The proposal includes the largest transportation projects in the county. The budget will used between now and the end of the 2025 Fiscal Year.The vote passed 11 (yes) - 7 (no) - 1 (abstain).As part of SANDAG's proposed "Five Big Moves" initiative to modernize transportation in the city, the money will be put towards "Complete Corridor" projects.RELATED: SANDAG leaders unveil bold vision for future of public transit in San DiegoAccording to a budget proposal released this week, the majority of the money will go towards transit and public transportation-based projects.However, Poway Mayor and SANDAG chair, Steve Vaus presented a revised budget with co-author, Escondido mayor, Paul McNamara. Some of the items in the budget include million for new trolley cars on the Blue Line, .8 million to purchase two new coaster trains for the North County Transit District, and million for preliminary designs on a central mobility hub. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Santas are taking a big hit in 2020 for two big reasons: the pandemic and politics.During a typical December, Santas in San Diego would pop up at events, fundraisers, malls, parties and more. FORBS is the Fraternal Order of Real Bearded Santas, and the group meets and trains year-round to prepare the best Santas for the holiday season. This year, even these pros can’t find work.There are two big reasons for this. The first is one that is impacting most industries right now: the pandemic. Events and parties are canceled, and malls are hurting. At a mall, Santa usually would go through a line of kids, put them on his lap, and ask them what they want for Christmas this year. Now, if Santa is able to meet and greet, face masks and Plexiglas stand in between Saint Nick and the children.RELATED: Out-of-state mall Santas? AB 5 was publicized as a bill that would help independent contractors like rideshare drivers, but it also impacts mall Santas. Santas will be getting a paycheck with holdings taken out of it,” said one Santa.This means Santas who train year-round for this month have to adapt. Some are turning to virtual meet and greets to make ends meet.“Virtual is definitely for me the savior of the year,” said a Santa who recently got booked up with back-to-back virtual greetings. He said he usually makes about ,000 per holiday season, but will be lucky to break ,000 this year, even with the uptick in virtual bookings.Another Santa said he usually works at a mall, but that gig was canceled this year so he’s working as much as he can at Seaport Village, which does have in-person Santa photo opportunities. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- State lawmakers are considering an overhaul to the CRV recycling program on bottles and cans that would make drink-makers responsible for setting up a system to collect the containers they produce.Redemption centers that sort cans and bottles are the best form of recycling for the environment, yielding more high-quality usable materials than curbside recycling in blue bins. But across the state, more than half of the redemption centers have closed over the last six years. With fewer locations to drop off recyclables, only two-thirds of the 5 and 10-cent bottle deposits actually get redeemed, according to Consumer Watchdog.“This old model has cratered. It’s actually on the verge of collapse,” said consumer advocate Liza Tucker. Part of the industry’s struggles has to do with China’s decision to limit the recycled materials it purchases from the U.S. Before that policy, the City of San Diego earned about million a year in revenue from its recycling program. Under a contract signed last year, the city now pays outside companies about million a year to collect those recyclables.A bill debated by state lawmakers Wednesday would create a new bottle deposit system similar to one in Oregon. Beverage makers would become responsible for helping consumers recycle, with oversight by the state.“When you put it on industry to take responsibility, and you set a redemption goal and have strong state oversight, they then have an incentive to run it right,” said Tucker.In Oregon, almost all stores are required to take back containers and issue 10 cents per item. There are also “BottleDrop Express” kiosks where customers can leave bags full of mixed recyclables and instantly receive money in an electronic account.Some groups have opposed the bill, saying it could hurt the already struggling neighborhood recycling centers.William Dermody, a spokesman for the American Beverage Association, said industry is ready to work with California lawmakers on a system to recycle, reclaim and reuse plastic, according to the Associated Press."America's beverage companies and local California bottlers share the goal of improving the recycling and reuse of plastic in California," he said.The bill would also add CRV onto wine and hard liquor bottles in 2024.RECYCLING TIPSRegardless of the outcome of SB 372, residents in San Diego have several recycling options. There are 35 recycling centers in San Diego City Limits. Consumers can search for the closest center on WasteFreeSD.org.Residents can also recycle in a curbside blue bin without the bottle deposit credit, but they should take care not to contaminate their recyclables, said City of San Diego Supervising Recycling Specialist Chelsea Klaseus.“We encourage residents to do their part to minimize contamination by making sure that anything they put into their blue bin is clean, dry and loose,” she said.Contaminants such as food, plastic film, bags, styrofoam or utensils can degrade the value of the rest of the recyclable materials, Klaseus said.There is a detailed list of questions and answers on the city’s recycling program here. 3134
