In a bizarre twist following the Parkland, Florida school shooting that killed 17 people, the confessed shooter Nikolas Cruz has been receiving "fan letters" from across the nation. The Sun Sentinel reported that Cruz not only has been receiving letters from admirers, he has also received money for his commissary account, which allows inmates to purchase snacks and accessories. So far, Cruz has been given 0. The letters, many of which are coming from teenage girls, are not being shown to Cruz as he is on suicide watch at the jail.Broward County Public Defender Howard Finkelstein told the Sun Sentinel the craze is "perverted." Some of the letters have included suggestive photos of young women. According to the Sun Sentinel, one woman from Chicago sent nine photos of herself that were sexually suggestive. "In my 40 years as public defender, I've never seen this many letters to a defendant," he said. “We read a few religious ones to him that extended wishes for his soul and to come to God,” Finkelstein added, “but we have not and will not read him the fan letters or share the photos of scantily-clad teenage girls.”The Sun Sentinel reported that one person from Texas sent a letter that included hand-drawn hearts and happy faces. "Your eyes are beautiful and the freckles on your face make you so handsome," the woman said in a letter to Cruz. “I’m really skinny and have 34C sized breasts.”A teenager wrote, “I’m 18-years-old. I’m a senior in high school. When I saw your picture on the television, something attracted me to you," the Sun Sentinel reported.Cruz, who admitted to killing 17 people last month at Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, awaits trial. Cruz could face the death penalty for the deaths, according to Florida law.  1840

If someone asks to borrow your cellphone, would you lend it them? If you have a popular payment app on there, you might want to think twice.Popular money transfer apps and services like Venmo, PayPal or Apple Pay are all attached to people’s bank accounts.Brittany Burmeister uses Venmo every day. She wasn’t aware police in cities across the country are warning of a scam circulating, costing some thousands of dollars. It works like this: someone asks to use your smartphone, says their battery died or they left theirs at home, they use your payment app and steal your funds without you even knowing.Joseph Martinez, an information system security professor at Milwaukee Area Technical College, says when you’re not using them, log out of the money apps and while you’re at it, get off of Bluetooth.“They can hack into the phone via the Bluetooth portal and then through that portal have access to any application that you have your password and credentials automatically stored,” said Martinez. He also suggests linking your credit card instead of a debit card, so you have more protection. Burmeister is taking notes, considering her cell, like so many others, is a digital wallet. She says she’s not sure now if she’ll hand off her phone to a stranger. “I’d probably just say 'hey, I bet the restaurant has a phone inside' or if they’re in a public place,” said Martinez. A spokesperson for Milwaukee police hadn’t heard of any reports but urges people to be cautious. Martinez says as another precaution, you should download antivirus and spyware apps and what’s called a VPN app, or "virtual private network." It will shield your financial apps from strangers trying to gain access. 1726

If US President Donald Trump considers himself "pro-life," he should reconsider his decision to end a program that allows the children of undocumented immigrants to remain in the United States, Pope Francis said."The President of the United States presents himself as pro-life and if he is a good pro-lifer, he understands that family is the cradle of life and its unity must be protected," Francis said. The Pope's comments came during a news conference aboard the papal plane, as he returned to the Vatican after a five-day trip to Colombia. In the wide-ranging Q&A with reporters, the Pope also said history will harshly judge deniers of climate change. The Pope acknowledged that he was not familiar with the specifics of DACA. "I think this law comes not from parliament but from the executive," the Pope said. "If that is so, I am hopeful that it will be re-thought."Trump and the Pope have tussled over immigration before, with the Pope saying last year that anyone who thinks only of building walls instead of bridges is "not Christian."Trump fired back, saying that no religious leader should question another man's faith. The US Catholic bishops have also battled a former Trump administration official on DACA in recent days.Steve Bannon, who until recently was Trump's chief strategist, accused the bishops of having an ulterior motive in advocating for families affected by the decision to revoke DACA. They have called the decision "heartless" and "reprehensible."Bannon said the bishops "need illegal aliens to fill the churches," a charge the bishops called "preposterous" and "insulting."   1621

In a new study of mask usage published by the American Institute of Physics, researchers found that if 70% of people wore surgical masks, the pandemic would be "eradicated."According to the article, which was published Tuesday, investigators with the Department of Engineering at the National University of Singapore looked at studies that reviewed N95s, surgical masks, and cloth masks to see how the mask's design, material, and capability of protecting people from the virus, was.Authors Sanjay Kumar and Heow Pueh Lee found that if 70% of people wore surgical masks in public consistently, the pandemic could be eradicated. Even cloth masks, which they found to be 30% effective, could lead to a "significant reduction of COVID-19 burden."The researchers analyzed that if masks are worn, it reduces the size of fluid droplets expelled from the nose and mouth, spreading the virus in the air. The investigators said small droplets traveled a more considerable distance and were in the air longer because they became aerosolized.According to the article, the researchers found that the N95s filtered out aerosol-sized droplets, and masks made with hybrid polymer materials effectively filter particles while simultaneously cooling the face. 1250
