BEIJING, Jan. 24 (Xinhua) -- A 40-member Chinese medical care and epidemic prevention team left here for Haiti on Sunday afternoon on a chartered flight, which also carried 20 tonnes of medical supplies, said the Ministry of Commerce (MOC).The MOC said earlier in the day that China had decided to provide medical supplies worth 18 million yuan (2.64 million U.S. dollars) in additional aid to quake-ravaged Haiti.The 20-tonne medical supplies included medicines, hygiene equipment, medical devices and camping equipment, said the ministry in a statement.Also onboard the plane would be four Chinese peace-keeping police officers, replacing the four who were killed in the earthquake. BEIJING, Feb. 18 (Xinhua) -- A report by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology said the overall situation of China's iron and steel industry will be better than last year, thanks to the steady momentum of economic recovery.The report said four factors will have positive impact on the iron and steel industry: increased government investment, a clear recovery of global economy, ample money supply in the market and a series of upcoming government policies aimed at promoting healthy development of the iron and steel industry.However, the ministry held that the foundation of the current economic recovery still needs to be consolidated and external demand still falls short, creating fairly big difficulties for the operation of the iron and steel industry.The report said in 2010 iron and steel companies must be prepared to face the challenges of over supply, sluggish international market and rising production cost.In 2009, China's 68 large and medium sized iron and steel companies made 55.39 billion yuan (8.12 billion U.S. dollars) in profit, down 31.43 percent year on year.

Food safety is closely related to people's life and health and economic development and social harmony," Li said at the first plenary meeting of the recently-established food safety commission under the State Council.According to Li, this year's campaign will focus on the prominent issues of food additives, edible farm products, food production processing, food circulation and import and export, livestock slaughter, the catering industry and health supplements industry, among others."We should understand the foundation for the country's food safety is still weak and the situation is grave," Li said. BEIJING, March 14 (Xinhua) -- China's Ministry of Information and Technology (MIIT) issued a guideline Sunday, urging the nation's auto producers to establish quality accountability mechanism to improve quality management.The MIIT warned auto production enterprises against blind expansion, urging them to focus more on technology upgrade and improve product quality by using "new technology, new technics, new equipment and new materials."Auto producers were also asked to strengthen after-sale service, setting up an accountability mechanism to timely recall and deal with the faulty products.As China's auto industry is at a stage of rapid development, it should take effective measures to ensure product quality, so as to prompt the industry to develop in a sound and healthy way, said an official with the MIIT.Data from the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers showed that new auto sales rose 46.15 percent year on year to 13.64 million units in 2009 in China, helping the country overtake the United States as the world's largest auto market.
