She hid students in a closet.Tales of heroism have emerged as survivors recall the moments after a gunman opened fire Wednesday at the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida.Here are the stories of some of the people who saved lives:  331

GLEN BURNIE, Maryland — Two kennel owners are facing dozens of charges after several dogs were found neglected in their care, and one of them had to be put down. On March 20, Anne Arundel County Police say they got a complaint about Olympian Kennels, a company that was supposed to be training and caring for dogs. Some of the dog owners were concerned after they could not reach the kennel's owners, Rebecca Wolfe or Cameron Whitaker-Nelson. In addition to not being able to reach the owners, there were concerns raised after Wolfe posted a message on social media saying Animal Control had taken all of the animals in her care and custody, but Animal Control had not done that.After an investigation, police found six dogs in the basement of Wolfe and Whitaker-Nelson's home on Shade Drive in Glen Burnie. Two of the dogs were severely weak and sick. The basement where the dogs were kept smelled of ammonia and fecal matter. One of the two sick dogs was having trouble breathing and had to be put down shortly after going to the animal hospital. The five other dogs were returned to their owners following a checkup from a veterinarian. The adventures of Maizie Rai with her human best friend Fiona Dawson are well documented on social media, their story is now intertwined with this house.“I had to sit there and watch them take dogs out of their house but not my dog," said Dawson."  I don’t know where she is I don’t know where her body is I don’t know anything.”Dawson's story lines up with numerous other's who have reached out about neglect at this home.The couple used to work for Jessica breeding at Premier Dog Training and Boarding.Wolfe worked the front desk and Whitaker-Nelson was a trainer, Breeding said she trusted them initially.Putting dogs into trainers homes to acclimate is how most dogs complete their training.Breeding got suspicious when a service dog in training named King died in the couples care and the couple refused to get a necropsy done. "After two weeks we were asking her for the results she wouldn't’t give them to us,” said Breeding.  “I ended up calling the vet and they said no necropsy was ever done. It was a battle to try to get the body from the vet for me to actually get a necropsy done. We found out that the dog had passed because of negligent circumstances.”Around that time Dawson started to get worried about Maizie Rai.ABC2 got emails that show an agreement with the couple Dawson met through Premier Dog Training.Dawson had to travel a lot for much for work, so the couple would take in Maizie Dawson would pay for her food, medicine, and give the couple 0 a month.Wolfe and Nelson would take care of Maizie long term and Dawson could set up visits.“I picked her up and she seemed to be doing great,” said Dawson. “She was socializing with other dogs which was quite unusual for her because she had such anxiety when she was with me. I really kind of felt like she was having a better life with them then she was with me."That was the last time Watson saw Maizie Rai.She said for two months the pictures were replaced by excuses and then nothing.“Throughout all this time never in my mind did I think that she wouldn’t be alive,” Dawson said. Dawson and Breeding went to the house to figure out what was going on, no one answered.Anne Arundel County Police and Animal Control joined them,that's when the couple finally came out of the house. “I say "Hi Cameron here for Maizie Rai". In front of the police and animal control.  Cameron looks me in the eye and says "Fiona we texted you a couple of months ago not sure if you got it or not but Maizie Rai died". I just lost it, and screamed and cried almost hyperventilated.  We then sat back and watched animal control take dogs out of their house.”Dawson has no idea where Maizie Rai's body is.This is also not the first time there have been complaints against the two kennel owners. There have been two prior complaints made in May of 2017 and January of 2018. The investigation is still ongoing and can result in additional charges. Anyone with information is asked to contact Animal Control Officer Wolfe at 410-222-3929 (no relation to suspect Rebecca Wolfe).We were able to reach Whitaker-Nelson on the phone, he said he had no comment and that he didn't know what was going on.Wolfe and Whitaker-Nelson have each been charged with 40 counts of animal cruelty. 4506

George Washington University is looking into a confession by a professor of African American studies that has been pretending to be Black.Jessica Krug admits she was born a white, Jewish girl from Kansas City — not the Black Latina from the inner city she claimed to be in her books."For the better part of my adult life, every move I've made, every relationship I've formed, has been rooted in the napalm toxic soil of lies," she wrote in a blog post.Krug, whose work has been up for prestigious Harriet Tubman and Frederick Douglas book prizes, is now calling herself a culture "leech."Critics say the author and associated professor made the admission not to clear her conscience but because she was found out.In a blog post, Krug calls herself a "coward" and says she deserves to be "canceled," blaming it all on mental illness."..the mental health professionals from whom I have been so belatedly seeking help assure me that this is a common response to some of the severe trauma that marked my early childhood and teen years," she wrote.She added that her mental health issues do not "explain nor justify" her actions.Essence magazine has removed her writing from its website."... GREENCASTLE, Ind. — Several dozen students interrupted an event featuring actress Jenna Fischer at DePauw University Tuesday to protests recent racial incidents on and near campus.Many of them held signs with things claiming they are "afraid for their lives" after recent events. Fischer, star of the sicoms "The Office" and "Splitting Up Together" was at the university to discuss her new book, "The Actor's Life: A Survivor's Guide."University Spokesman Ken Owen, who was moderating the lecture with Fischer, said about 15 minutes into the program a group of students got up and began interrupting the event whistling, shouting and saying they were afraid for their safety on campus because of the recent racial incidents. Last week, a hateful message was found written in a bathroom at the university. The message, which read " All ******* must die -KKK," was written on a bathroom wall of the Inn at DePauw, a public building on campus. Another anti-Semitic and homophobic messages were also found. The video above was captured during the Tuesday evening protests by Shannon Samson. Another event being investigated by the university involves a hateful slur written in rocks at the DePauw nature park, which is owned by the university. Owen said there was a meeting with the school president Tuesday over the events and that have happened up until that point and they expect more meetings in the future. DePauw University issued the following statement on social media after the event.  1573

Gun policy has been a longtime devise topic but not usually a top issue among Latino voters. That is until this election.A recent research study found 7 out of 10 Latinos voters want stricter gun policy.In El Paso, Texas, a mass shooting that left 23 people dead and several injured has caused people to pay closer attention to gun policy and take a stance.On Monday, we ran into Adrian Loera at Sportsman Elite. Loera was at the gun store practicing shooting his gun at the range.“You never know when something is going to happen,” he said. “That is one of the reasons why I got my handgun license, because of the events that happened here last year.”Loera is referring to August 3, 2019, when a gunman drove hundreds of miles to an El Paso Walmart, with the sole purpose of killing Latinos.Last year's shooting changed a lot for El Paso. It robbed the community of a sense of security they once felt. Loera says he never thought about owning a gun before and now not only does he own a gun, he wants to make sure no one takes away his right to do so. His new beliefs would influence his vote this coming election.While Loera’s views on gun policy have changed, the same horrible event had quite the opposite impact on Miranda Escobar Gregory. As she stands in front of the newly erected memorial for all 23 of the victims, she recalls the paralyzing fear she felt the day of the shooting. She says the entire city was locked down for hours.“It’s not a need to have a giant machine gun or semi-automatic gun when you are just playing it safe,” said Escobar Gregory.She wants assault-style guns to be banned at the federal level and a mental health screening as part of the purchasing process. In Texas, you can buy a gun as long as you pass a criminal background check.Critics of a more restrictive purchasing process say there are other tactics that should be considered.“Another law preventing or trying to prevent law abiding citizens from getting access wouldn’t have changed the outcome of that day,” said Richard Garcia, the director of training at Sportsman Elite.Garcia says he is a proponent of decreasing all types of violence but feels as a nation, we need to get to the core issue of why these things keep on happening.“I think we should be moving towards the actual root of the problem, which does back to the individual. What can we learn from the person who did this so we can prevent something like this from happening in the future,” said Garcia.Garcia says conversations need to be had and arguments need to be worked through so that we can come to a compromise on how to best address the issue.“I know there is no such thing as a perfect compromise, but that is what the laws in the books are for,” said Garcia.Escobar Gregory says she will continue to fight for stricter gun policies and vote for those who will support her wishes. Meantime, people like Loera, who fear his right to own a gun might get a little more difficult, are rushing to get a license to carry and purchase a firearm. 3018
