SHANGHAI, April 3 (Xinhua) -- Environment authorities in Shanghai will ban burning waste straw in the suburban agricultural areas to ensure air quality during the World Expo period.The Shanghai Municipal Environment Protection Bureau will use satellite remote sensing to monitor the burning of waste straw during the Expo period from May 1 to Oct. 31, the bureau said in a statement Saturday.Statistics show that about 170,000 hectares of barley, wheat, paddy and rape are planted in the suburban agricultural areas of Shanghai, which can produce up to 1.3 million tonnes of waste straw every year, according to the bureau.Burning waste straw will produce carbon dioxide and other pollutants to pollute the air, it said.To help dispose of the waste straw, more than 40 organic fertilizer plants in Shanghai have planned to use more straw as auxiliary material in fertilizer production, the bureau said.The Shanghai World Expo, with the theme of "Better City, Better Life," is expected to draw 70 million visitors from around the world during the six-month period.

WASHINGTON, April 22 (Xinhua) -- The U.S. Commerce Department said on Thursday that it has set preliminary antidumping duties ( AD) on imports of certain seamless pipe from China, a move that might escalate trade disputes between the two countries.The department said it "preliminarily determined that Chinese producers/exporters have sold seamless pipe in the United States at 32.39 to 98.37 percent less than fair value."As a result of this preliminary determination, Commerce will instruct U.S. Customs and Border Protection to collect a cash deposit or bond based on these preliminary rates.The products covered by this investigation are suitable for the conveyance of water, steam, petrochemicals, oil products, natural gas, and other liquids and gasses in industrial piping systems.Imports of certain seamless pipe from China were valued at an estimated 182.3 million U.S. dollars in 2009, according to the U.S. Commerce Department.Commerce said that it is currently scheduled to make its final determination in September 2010.If Commerce makes an affirmative final determination, and the U. S. International Trade Commission makes an affirmative final determination that imports of certain seamless pipe salts from China materially injures, or threaten material injury to, the domestic industry, Commerce will issue an antidumping duty order.The new case followed the Commerce Department's initiation of antidumping (AD) and countervailing (CVD) duty investigation on Chinese aluminum extrusions on Wednesday.The protectionist moves by the Obama administration will ultimately hurt the U.S.-China trade relations, which are becoming more and more important due to the global financial crisis, economists warned.The onset of the global recession appears to have set off an increase in trade disputes around the world.Globally, new requests for protection from imports in the first half of 2009 are up 18.5 percent over the first half of 2008, according to the World Bank-sponsored Global Anti-dumping Database organized by Chad P. HONG KONG, May 2 (Xinhua) -- Hong Kong's leading charity donor, the Hong Kong Jockey Club, said Sunday it had donated another 16.3 million HK dollars (2.1 million U.S. dollars) for earthquake-hit area in northwestern China's Qinghai province to help disaster relief work.Together with the emergency donation of 2 million HK dollars made earlier, the Jockey Club contributed over 18.3 million HK dollars to support relief work for victims of the 7.1-magnitude earthquake, which hit the Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture of Yushu in Qinghai on April 14.In a press release, the Jockey club said it achieved a net operating surplus of 15.36 million HK dollars on April 21 at the Happy Valley race meeting.
