A team of scientists from the UK and Ukraine have created a vodka distilled from rye grown in the exclusion zone near the site of Chernobyl's nuclear power plant. It's also made from water pulled from the area's aquifer. So, would you be insane to drink what they are calling 'Atomik' vodka? The makers say no, and that it’s perfectly safe to drink. The scientists, however, admit the grain starts out radioactive but claim the distillation process removes the dangerous isotopes. They even say they had a university lab run tests to ensure the vodka was safe to drink.They are hoping to release the vodka to the public in limited supply, where it will have to compete with liquors that were never radioactive. The Chernobyl Spirit Company says it will donate 75 percent of its profits to people who still live in the area. 956

At the corner of Peabody Drive and Hardy Cash Drive in Hampton, Virginia you'll find a group of determined kids."We are raising money for single mothers that are struggling. They have to do so much on their own," said 11-year-old Cartier Carey.Cartier is the leader of the "Carti Pack" and CEO of his lemonade stand, one unlike any other."We sell lemonade, chips, candy - all types of stuff that people want, and it's not expensive," he said.Each dollar spent towards a cup of the summertime drink and goodies on the side goes towards buying diapers for local families in need."The diapers are for mothers or anyone that has babies," Cartier said.It's an unusual business model, but one that's working."There's a shortage of Pampers and wipes in the stores because of the pandemic, so this couldn't have come at a better time," said Anthony Carey, Cartier's dad.A rising sixth-grader like Cartier and his friends could be out playing sports or riding bikes, but instead, they're helping single mothers in the community."There are a lot of grown-ups out there not doing what we're doing," Cartier said."As a parent, it makes me feel spectacular," Anthony said.This lemonade stand isn't a first for Cartier. San Diego (KGTV)- Starting today, additional background checks are now required for people to buy ammunition. The system roll-out is leaving some store owners frustrated. "It's going to be a lot harder for us to come in and buy ammo," says customer George Garcia. The state law went into effect today, but it wasn't until 7 a.m. that the software went live. "It is frustrating because we had to wait until the day of for the law to go into effect and the system to be in place," says Danielle Rudolph, Director of Sales Operations at Poway Weapons and Gear Range. "Then we still have to train staff properly." The store must keep a record of the sales for five years. The customer must have California drivers license or ID and pay an additional fee before they can even get their hands on the ammo. "The basic ammunition eligibility check Is a dollar every time you buy. That is for people who have purchased firearms in California before," says Rudolph. "Then there's the standard one, that is . That is for anybody that has not purchased a firearm in California."Some activists believe the new law could save lives. A statement from San Diegans for Gun Violence Prevention says in part: "This will help to prevent felons and those with illegal firearms from getting quick and easy access to high quantities of bullets, while allowing responsible gun owners who pass background checks to continue to purchase bullets."They also say the new law will make it harder for those planning mass shootings to stock up on ammunition. 1539

(AP) — Facebook says it is deleting the name of the person who has been identified in conservative circles as the whistleblower who triggered a congressional impeachment inquiry into President Donald Trump's actions.The company said Friday that mention of the potential whistleblower's name violates Facebook's "coordinating harm policy," which prohibits material that could identify a "witness, informant, or activist."Facebook says it is removing mentions of the alleged whistleblower's name and will revisit this decision if the name is widely published in the media or used by public figures in debate.On Twitter, though, the alleged whistleblower's name was circulating widely on Friday. The company does not have a policy against identifying whistleblowers by name and is not removing the posts.Some of the stories identifying the person came from the conservative news site Breitbart, which Facebook counts as one of its news partners in a newly launched news section on its app. However, the company said it was also removing identifying posts on the whistleblower from Breitbart.In a statement, Twitter said it prohibits the sharing of "personally identifiable information about any individual, including the alleged whistleblower." But the company's policy on such information does not consider a person's name to be private information, a category that does include details such as a person's address, contact information or medical records.U.S. whistleblower laws exist to protect the identity and careers of people who bring forward accusations of wrongdoing by government officials.
