SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A man wielding a metal chain was shot and killed by a two-year veteran of the San Diego Police Department this week, the department announced Saturday.SDPD said 48-year-old Vaugh Harrison Denham, of San Diego, was shot and killed by Officer Corey Pitts after Denham refused to obey officers' orders to drop a machete he had reportedly used to attack someone Wednesday.Police said they arrived at a violent disturbance call involving a "machete-style" weapon in the 4000 block of Boston Ave. just after 5 p.m. Police found a 57-year-old victim with injuries that suggested he'd been attacked with an "edged weapon."ORIGINAL STORY: Police investigating fatal officer-involved shooting in SouthcrestThe victim was taken to a nearby hospital with non-life threatening injuries.At the scene, police tried to contact Denham around the corner from the initial scene. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A San Diego dentist is giving parents a new tool to win the battle over brushing.Dr. Kami Hoss recently released a singing toothbrush that pairs with augmented reality technology."We gotta come up with brushes that are really fun and educate in a fun way," says Dr. Hoss.The brush plays a song for two minutes, which is the amount of time dentists recommend for brushing teeth. While the song plays, kids can use an app to watch augmented reality characters come to life on their phones.The characters "pop out" of a sticker placed on the bathroom mirror and teach kids how to brush properly. Hoss says this is the first toothbrush to use AR."It's Pixar quality," says Dr. Hoss of the animation. "We spent years developing this to make sure it's beautiful."According to the CDC, around 20% of kindergarteners have some form of tooth decay. Studies show that children brush their teeth 73% longer when listening to music. The toothbrush also helps people know when it's time to buy a new one. If someone uses it to brush twice a day, the battery will die after three months. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A Pacific Beach bartender was sucker-punched by a man he said refused to wear a face mask.Tony Aversa, bar lead at 710 Beach Club, said he was working on Saturday, Sept. 5, when he noticed a confrontation at the door around 7 p.m.He says he walked over to the three men and, "I just asked them to please put on a mask and I'll happily help you with whatever you need ... The guy just refused and continued to argue blatantly within inches of my face with no mask on."A female bartender walked over and Aversa said the man shoved her, so he put himself between the man and his coworker.That's when Aversa said another member of the combative group came running."He was walking away at the time and came running back down the sidewalk and blind-sided me with a punch ... Immediately, you could tell my nose was broken, I was gushing blood and I knew immediately what had happened, I kinda spun around and asked one of my employees to call the cops," Aversa said.He said an officer was there within a few minutes and walked with him, finding one of the men. Bystanders said the man who threw the punch got into a car and sped off.Police describe the man as Pacific Islander, 6'2", 260 lbs., with curly brown hair, and wearing a white t-shirt and dark basketball shorts.When we asked if Aversa had anything to say to the man, he said no. "I just want to see him put to justice at this point," says Aversa.Aversa will be seeing a surgeon later this week for his broken nose. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A parole board Tuesday granted parole to an actor previously convicted of stabbing his ex-girlfriend nearly two dozen times.Shelley Malil, who had a supporting role in the movie “The 40-Year-Old Virgin,” was convicted seven years ago of repeatedly stabbing Kendra Beebe in San Marcos.Beebe spoke to 10News after Malil was granted Parole. “Why are we letting out this person who’s going to go back out and go back on the internet and date and possibly relapse and hurt somebody else.” RELATED: 40-Year-Old Virgin actor deemed suitable for parole, 10 years after brutally stabbing ex-girlfriendAs of this year, Malil had served 9 years of his 12-years-to-life sentence. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A possible theft ring may be 'fishing' for checks at local post offices.Kevin, who owns a small business, mailed out several checks to vendors at the post office in Poway on a Friday night. On the next Tuesday morning last month, he got a call from his bank, Wells Fargo. A woman had tried to cash a fake check at a bank in Los Angeles, a typed check for nearly ,500 written out to a woman's name from Kevin's business. The bank rejected it. The bank representative then asked him about two other checks that had just been deposited at other branches. The two fake checks - written out to a different woman for some 0 each - had been deposited for cash in the Los Angeles area."There's definitely anxiety. You don't know how much money has been compromised," said Kevin.Kevin is not alone. In April, 10news featured the story of Barbara Reynolds and her state tax check, stolen and altered after she dropped it off at post office in Mira Mesa. Her check was likely 'fished' out by thieves using a rodent glue trap, before being washed. A chemical solution dissolves away the ink, allowing a thief to fill in the blanks.Another theft victim told 10news the Postal Inspection Service supervisor described to him a possible theft ring that has hit post offices in Encinitas, Poway and Mira Mesa in recent months. 10news has also tracked down reports of similar thefts in Sorrento Valley and Rancho Bernardo."It's frustrating. Never crossed my mind that something dropped off at post office could be compromised," said Kevin. Kevin's bank did cover the loss of the fake checks. 10news reached to the Postal Inspection Service but haven't heard back.Experts say use the slots inside the post office and if you do use an outside collection box, drop off your mail before the final collection time. 1823
