BEIJING, June 10 (Xinhua) -- China hopes the United States will take an objective, rational and just view towards China's national defense policy and the development of its armed forces, said Foreign Ministry spokesman Qin Gang here on Thursday.Qin's comment came in response to a question on China's attitude towards a U.S. military officer's remarks on China's military development. The Chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff Admiral Mike Mullen said in a speech to the Asia Society's annual dinner that he was now "genuinely concerned" about "the gap as wide as what seems to be forming between China's stated intent and its military programs."Responding to the remarks, Qin urged the U.S. side to do more to build military relations with China, rather than harming them, so to ensure regional peace, stability and security.Qin said the sole purpose of China's defense policy is self-defense and its military is being developed in a peaceful way.China's development will not pose a threat to any country and anyone, he stressed, adding "We will not threaten and invade others."China opposes hegemonism, he said. China is still a developing country, and even if it becomes a developed country in the future, it will still stick to the road of peaceful development and will not seek hegemony."It is the solemn commitment made by the Chinese government to the outside world," he said.

XI'AN, July 20 (Xinhua) -- Floods and landslides triggered by torrential rains have left at least 15 people dead and 54 missing in northwest China's Shaanxi Province, flood control authorities said late Monday. The lives of more than 1.33 million people were disrupted by the heavy flooding in 23 counties and cities in the southern regions of the province, said officials in the provincial flood control headquarters.Torrential rains have cut off roads, flattened homes, destroyed power facilities and flooded farmland in the worst-hit Ankang City, causing economic losses estimated at 881 million yuan (129 million U.S. dollars), said officials. In the mountainous county of Langao in Ankang, three people were reported dead and 17 still missing after landslides and mud-rock flows struck several villages late Sunday.Continuous rainfall has battered many Chinese provinces and regions over the past week.In neighboring Sichuan Province, flash floods and landslides left at least 26 people dead and more than 30 missing.China is also preparing for the worst Yangtze flooding in more than a decade as water levels in the upper and middle sections of China' s longest waterway continue rising.

BEIJING, Aug. 22 (Xinhua) -- Wuhan Iron and Steel Company Ltd., the listed subsidiary of China's third largest steel maker, said Sunday that its net profit rose 90.43 percent year on year to 963.53 million yuan (141.7 million U.S. dollars) during the first half of the year as strong economic growth boosted steel demand and prices. The company's first-half-year sales reached 34.36 billion yuan, up 50.72 percent from one year earlier, it said in a statement delivered to the Shanghai Stock Exchange. However, costs also climbed in the first six months compared with a year earlier because of increases in raw material prices, it said.Production costs for steel products gained 47.12 percent year on year to 31.18 billion yuan. Further, the company's steel output in the first half of the year gained 29.75 percent year on year to 8.04 million tonnes.China's producer price index, a major gauge of inflation at the wholesale level, rose 6 percent in the January-June period, according to statistics released by the National Bureau of Statistics. However, the company was likely to face a "difficult time" in the second half of 2010 and meeting its full-year profit target would become a "challenging task" as demand from auto, home appliance and real estate sectors experienced "drastic changes" since July, leading to more restrained sales and falling prices, it said.Company officials also worried that high prices of iron ore, coal and electricity would further push up production costs and squeeze profit margins. On Friday, the price of its shares fell 2.87 percent to 4.73 yuan on the Shanghai bourse.
