SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A San Diego man thanked lifeguards Thursday for saving his life after he fell from the Ocean Beach pier.Adrian Castillo, 19, was drinking alcohol with his brother and friends in January when he suddenly fell backwards into the cold water.Castillo’s brother called 911 and after nine minutes, lifeguards Marc Brown and Jim Lockwood found him floating face-down in the water.Castillo was technically dead for five minutes.He spent three days in a coma and also suffered pneumonia from the cold water.“I have a scar in the back of my head,” said Castillo. “I have a couple of scars on my chest from grabbing on the poles.”Castillo is now fully recovered.“I’m very grateful,” said Castillo.  “If it wasn’t for them I probably would have been lost out in the ocean for like a month or something.”“We’re happy that you’re back and safe and alive,” Brown said to Castillo. “You have a second chance in life now.”San Diego Lifeguards, Police and city officials want everyone who heads outdoors this summer to be educated on rip current safety, drowning prevention, bonfires and know what they should not bring to our local beaches.The city has created a website to help guide locals and visitors to safety. 1230

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A San Diego woman said a scammer used the military to trick her into paying for a phony apartment rental."We were looking to move during this tough time, which is kind of already more stressful than it normally would be,” said Maci, who declined to use her last name.She searched various websites and thought she found a good deal on Craigslist for a place downtown on Market Street. Through email, the supposed owner said his name was Matthew Sherman, a sergeant stationed at Naval Station Rota in Spain. He said he was looking for a long-term renter and sent Maci a link with photos and an Airbnb site that looked legitimate."Along with the presence of the military, presence of the Airbnb website, I felt safe in the process,” Maci said.She exchanged emails and text messages to get more information about the apartment. She wired ,600.“There was this sense of pressure because I was so worried that this great deal was going to disappear,” Maci said.It turns out that the listing was fake. Maci said the profile photo used by the man pretending to be Sgt. Sherman was a real soldier who passed away in an accident in 2018. “It really just sad heavy on my heart because this person's family doesn't realize his photo's being used for criminal activity,” Maci said.When Team 10 contacted “Matthew Sherman,” the response via email was similar to what Maci received. When questioned if the listing was legitimate, he stopped responding.It was an expensive lesson for Maci, but one she wants to share so others do not fall for it. The latest set of rules handed down by Governor Newsom is not sitting well with salon owner Shanelle Cedeno.“Now it just feels like a target," Cedeno says.As hospitals become overwhelmed with surging cases, ICU capacity is the state’s newest metric for tightening restrictions.RELATED: Gov. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — An unfounded "security threat" prompted Naval Base San Diego to initiate a lockdown Thursday afternoon, authorities said.The lockdown went into effect just before 11:30 a.m. over a reported "security threat," according to a Naval Base San Diego public information officer. According to San Diego Harbor Police, the threat was unfounded.Base officials lifted the lockdown and resumed normal operations just before 12 p.m., but didn't comment on the lockdown. 484

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A Sorrento Valley company is working to create an implant that will help people kick their addiction to both opioids and alcohol.BioCorRx, based in Orange County, is developing the implant. They chose San Diego-based Irisys Therapeutics to help them build it."It’s not going to fix the opioid crisis," says BioCorRx CEO Brady Granier. "But it’s going to be another tool in a tool chest of those people looking for another solution and one that will help them get through the cravings."The implant uses Naltrexone, a drug already approved by the FDA as an every-day pill or a once-per-month shot. Naltrexone blocks receptors in the brain so that opioids or alcohol won't have any effect on people who use them. It also helps curb cravings."As long as it’s blocking the receptor, the opioids come in, and they can’t engage with that receptor to give you the euphoria or the respiratory depression that leads to overdose," says Granier. "It’s protecting you."Granier says creating an implant that lasts three months will make it more likely that people will be able to beat their addition. The implant, named BICX102, would be implanted into a person's stomach fat and dissolve slowly over three months."The goal is to give someone a longer period of time to address those issues without the intrusive cravings coming in," he says. "A lot of behavioral changes can take place in 90 days that you can’t do in 30."Granier's company just received a .7 million grant from the National Institute on Drug Abuse. It will last two years, which Granier says will fund the research through the development of the implant and some early testing.He's hoping to start human testing by 2020.Granier says implants like the one he is hoping to create are already available in other countries. But the FDA has yet to approve one in the US, where standards are more strict."The first pellet you make needs to be exactly the same as the 10,000th," he says. "It has to be a precise process."It's personal for Granier, who has family members with addiction in their past. He also worked as a nurse before starting his company. Granier says he saw the destructive effects of addiction every day.
