It also inspired professional athletes to cancel practices and games the week of the shooting, to urge their leagues and fans to think about social injustice issues. A few nights after Blake’s shooting, investigators say 17-year-old Kyle Rittenhouse drove to Kenosha from his home in Illinois with an AR-15. He allegedly shot three demonstrators, two of them died.Rittenhouse was arrested at his home and faces five criminal counts including intentional homicide and reckless homicide.On a visit to Kenosha, President Trump visited with police officers and business owners whose stores had been damaged by protesters. He said he did not meet with the Blake family because they wanted a lawyer present for the meeting.Lindsay pressed Trump Jr. on why the administration has not spoken out about what happened to Blake, or the demonstrators who were shot."But why hasn't the Trump Administration or President Trump condemned what happened in Kenosha with Kyle Rittenhouse… coming across state lines and… murdering two people and injuring another [at a protest]?” Lindsay asked.“We're waiting for due process. We're not jumping to a conclusion… If I put myself in Kyle Rittenhouse['s shoes], maybe I shouldn't have been there. He's a young kid. I don't want young kids running around the streets with AR-15s… Maybe I wouldn't have put myself in that situation — who knows...? If you thought the presidential candidates had plenty of time to convince voters, think again. The swing state of North Carolina is set to start mailing out absentee ballots on Friday, September 4. That means voters will be able to return their ballots as early as next week. RECORD NUMBERS VOTING EARLYNorth Carolina is seeing a record number of absentee ballots because of the pandemic. In 2016. around 200,000 absentee ballots were counted. Already in 2020, the state has received around 600,000 requests. "It’s been kinda tough but we are trying to get through it," Kristen Scott, the elections director in Halifax, North Carolina, said. Scott only has a staff of three. In 2016, her staff received 200 absentee ballot requests. This year they have already received 2,000 and it's only early September. "I do go ahead and tell voters once you get your ballot, it's best to complete it and send it back in," Scott said. NORTH CAROLINA TEST CASEWhat happens next in North Carolina will be an example for other states around the country. Will voters return their ballot right away? Will they wait until the first debate? Additionally, will voters be able to follow all of the directions?For instance, in North Carolina, all absentee ballots must have a valid witness signature. During a pandemic will voters be able to find a witness? If it's not there, the ballot will be rejected. "In the primary, we saw about 15 percent of absentee ballots rejected," Allison Griggs with the Southern Coalition for Social Justice, said. Griggs fears the election could depend on whether voters follow directions or not. In North Carolina, election officials are allowed to contact voters if they find an error with their ballot prior to the polls closing. Griggs advises all Americans to be on the lookout for phone calls from election officials just in case. She agreed, but during the drive, she says he fidgeted with his blinkers and asked her to exit the SUV to make sure they were working. HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (AP) — Alabama police say a dispute over crab legs at a dinner buffet ended in a brawl that left two people facing misdemeanor charges.Huntsville police officer Gerald Johnson says he was eating at the Meteor Buffet restaurant when a fight broke out.Johnson tells WHNT-TV that diners were using service tongs like fencing swords and plates were shattering, and a woman was beating a man. Johnson says diners had been waiting in line for crab legs for more than 10 minutes, and they lost their tempers once the food came out.The station reports Chequita Jenkins is charged with assaulting John Chapman, who suffered a cut on his head. Chapman is charged with disorderly conduct.Court records aren't available to show whether either person has a lawyer. 776

In an order laced with language accusing President Donald Trump of attempting to rewrite immigration laws, a federal judge based in San Francisco temporarily blocked the government late Monday night from denying asylum to those crossing over the southern border between ports of entry.Judge Jon S. Tigar of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California said that a policy announced November 9 barring asylum for immigrants who enter outside a legal check point '"irreconcilably conflicts" with immigration law and the "expressed intent of Congress.""Whatever the scope of the President's authority, he may not rewrite the immigration laws to impose a condition that Congress has expressly forbidden," Tigar wrote, adding that asylum seekers would be put at "increased risk of violence and other harms at the border" if the administration's rule is allowed to go into effect.The temporary restraining order is effective nationwide and will remain in effect until December 19, when the judge has scheduled another hearing, or further order of the court.The order is the latest setback for the administration that has sought to crack down on what it says are flaws in the immigration system, and it is a victory for the American Civil Liberties Union, the Southern Poverty Law Center and other groups who argued it is illegal to block someone based on how they entered the country."This ban is illegal, will put people's lives in danger and raises the alarm about President Trump's disregard for separation of powers," said the ACLU's Lee Gelernt."There is no justifiable reason to flatly deny people the right to apply for asylum, and we cannot send them back to danger based on the manner of their entry," he said.Earlier this month, the President issued a proclamation referring to "large, organized groups" who were traveling through Mexico and "reportedly intend to enter the United States unlawfully or without proper documentation and to seek asylum."It said that those seeking entry can only do so temporarily at recognized ports of entry to allow for "orderly processing" and denied entry to those at any other location along the southern border. 2178
