SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Family members in the South Bay mourning the death of a beloved grandfather and foster parent from coronavirus.Enrique Gonzalez, 68, was doing everything right. He was staying at home. His family was shopping for him. A month ago, he got sick."Runny nose, body aches, fever," said his nephew, Fernando Gonzalez.Fernando says within a week, Gonzalez tested positive for COVID-19."As soon as he had trouble breathing and talking, we took him to the hospital," said Fernando.Doctors put him on a ventilator and into a medically induced coma. Weeks later, after suffering cardiac arrest, his condition deteriorated. A nurse helped his large family talk to him through Facetime calls."Told him jokes, playing music for him ... praying for him. Really tough not to be in the room," said Fernando.A week ago, Gonzalez passed away."Just devastating to everybody," said Fernando.Fernando says the family now grieving the loss of a hard-working man with the biggest of hearts. After Gonzalez retired from decades working in construction, he and his wife decided to become foster parents, fostering over 20 children in the past 4 years."Even when he passed away, still fostering an infant ... SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Hundreds of miles from her hometown of Paradise, Ashley Ketcham watches in horror as the Camp Fire ravages her beloved community.She now lives in Escondido and first heard about the fire from her mother.“I kind of blew it off because we’ve had fires my whole life, and then she wrote me back again and said the CMA Church burned down," Ketcham remembers.RELATED: Camp Fire: At least 9 dead as fire incinerates N. California townAt first, she felt numb.“I woke up this morning and, um, a friend of mine said 'Is it ok to hate God right now?' SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Del Mar may be the county's smallest city, but it has no shortage of workers commuting in every day to serve its residents and tourists.They're coming from as far away as Oceanside, La mesa, and Rancho Penasquitos. It's because the city - with a median home price of .7 million - has no affordable housing. "If they could live here and walk to work we'd get all kinds of benefits from that," said Del Mar Mayor Dwight Worden. To help make that happen, Del Mar may start charging developers of condos and condo conversions fees by the square foot. That could add to more than a hundred thousand dollars per project for affordable housing. Right now developers of those projects pay a flat fee of ,500, which hasn't been updated since 2007.The city council is considering a per square foot charge for existing construction and per square foot for new construction.The money would either go to expanding Del Mar's rent subsidy program, which currently assists five families in the city.Worden, however, said he prefers physical units because they are there forever. Del Mar currently has no affordable housing units, but the state requires it to have about 70. Worden said two currently proposed developments would include units, but he also would like the city to use the extra money to apply for federal and state grants.He also floated the idea of Del Mar buying an apartment building, converting them to condos, selling a portion of them to recoup its investment, and keeping some for low-income workers. 1571
