There’s a major love affair in the U.S. between humans and their furry friends. A playful puppy named Clifford has been Rachael Greenberg’s saving grace during the pandemic. She says the past nine months have brought a lot of anxiety into her life, but Clifford’s relentless support helped her through the first panic attack she ever experienced.“He woke up, and just like kind of climbed on my lap and he tried to put my feet up. And I don’t think he knew exactly what was going on, but he just like seemed to respond to it,” Greenberg said.Greenberg isn’t alone in her feelings.There’s been a rise in depression and anxiety in many people’s lives since the start of the pandemic.It’s Samara’s job as a therapy dog to offer people love and support.“She went and met one of the students who was quarantined due to COVID-19 who was feeling a little down and lonely,” human-animal connection expert Philip Tedeschi said.Tedeschi is a professor in the graduate school of social work at the University of Denver, and a human-animal connection expert with the dog-sitting website Rover.“We’re looking at human-animal connection through the lens of how people and animals interact and what some of the health-promoting benefits of that are,” Tedeschi said.According to a recent survey done by Rover, 92% of dog owners say that their dog has played a role in positively impacting their mental health since the pandemic began. Tedeschi says history proves dogs have become some our most important, reliable and trusting friends.“Some people would argue that we may have been co-evolving with dogs for 20-to-60-thousand years or more, and what has occurred as a result as that is dogs have become especially attune to people, and people have become specially attune to dogs.”Tedeschi says we can measure how our interactions with companion animals influence our health. In fact, he says humans can tend to match their own breathing and heartbeat to the resting rate of an adult dog which helps us to calm down.“They understand our language, they know the nuances of the tone of voice we use, in many cases they’ll recognize something as small as a millimeter of movement in the human face that reflects a change in our emotion,” Tedeschi said.There’s a reason dogs are used to comfort veterans with PTSD and patients in hospitals. They offer endless love and keep us present in the moment.“It turns out that social support doesn’t only have to be human beings that support us," Tedeschi said. "That in many cases our non-human animal relationships are really effective support systems for us.”It was Greenberg’s time in a hospital that inspired her to study social work and animal therapy.“I have an auto-immune disease that I was diagnosed with at nine years old," Greenberg said. "We had a dog named Teddy and specifically got him when I was diagnosed.”Now she’s training Clifford to be a therapy dog. He’s brought happiness to her grandmother who lives with dementia. TOWSON, Maryland — A Maryland pharmacist pleaded guilty to trading pain medication for sexual acts.Richard Daniel Hiller, of Owings Mills, Maryland appeared in court Friday when his plea was announced by United States Attorney for the District of Maryland Robert K. Hur; Chief Terrence B. Sheridan of the Baltimore County Police Department and other law enforcement officials. “Abuse of oxycodone and other pharmaceutical drugs is one of our most significant drug enforcement challenges," said U.S. Attorney Robert K. Hur. "Those who divert pharmaceutical drugs for illegal purposes further the tragic cycle of addiction and the epidemic of opioid overdose deaths.” According to Hiller's plea agreement, he worked as a licensed pharmacist in Towson, Maryland from 2014 to 2017.Hiller admitted to filling fake prescriptions for multiple women if given sexual favors. He would tell the women to come to the pharmacy before opening and have sex with the women before giving the painkillers.Officials say, when trying to cover the false prescriptions he would list fake names. The women were addicted to oxycodone and would resell many of the pills to maintain their addiction.  Over the years, Hiller distributed approximately 20,500 15 milligram oxycodone pills.He faces a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison for the conspiracy and distribution. His sentencing is scheduled for November 15, 2018, at 10 a.m.  1507

It doesn't matter if you get dirty."Fifteen seconds later, the mother and daughter from Honduras were together in the U.S. And soon a U.S. Border Protection agent approached on an all-terrain vehicle to take them away in custody.U.S. Customs and Border Protection said Tuesday that the San Diego sector has experienced a "slight uptick" in families entering the U.S. illegally and turning themselves in to agents since the caravan of Central American migrants arrived in Tijuana two weeks ago.Thousands of migrants on the Mexico side of the border are living in crowded tent cities in Tijuana after a grueling weekslong journey through Mexico on foot and hitching rides with the goal of applying for asylum in the U.S. Frustrated with the long wait to apply, with the U.S. processing 100 requests at most each day, some migrants are trying to cross over clandestinely.Rachel Rivera, 19, told The Associated Press that Honduras had become unlivable. Moments before flattening herself under the fence, she said she was slipping through to the U.S. in an attempt to "give a better life" to her daughter Charlot.An AP video journalist also witnessed more than two dozen migrants scale a fence between Mexico and the U.S. on Monday evening. "When people choose to ignore that process, they put themselves in danger and, in the case of families, they choose to put the lives of their children at risk."Trump took to Twitter again Tuesday to drum up support for a better border wall, arguing that the expense would be less than the U.S. incurs each year due to illegal immigration.People mainly from Honduras but also from El Salvador and Guatemala formed the caravan to Tijuana, seeking safety in numbers while crossing Mexico to avoid criminals and the fees demanded by the gangs that prey on migrants. This election season, Demetrius Short is hustling to get his people to the polls.“We have the wonderful opportunity as African American men to be here today,” Short said to a group of young African American voters outside a polling site in Nashville, Tennessee. “The next John Lewis might be right here.”Short is the founder and CEO of the Transformation Life Center and Steps of Success 5K, nonprofits mentoring youth living in underserved communities. Now, Short and his team are using physical fitness to inspire political change by leading young Black men on runs and talking about becoming better people afterwards.“Going out, taking your niece and nephew that may not have a father, being that father or mother example to them and just be the change you want to see,” Short said.During this presidential election, Short is reaching out to college students from Fisk University, a private historically Black college in Nashville.“We’re here to come out here and inspire change in our community and inspire young people to really vote,” said Myles Harris, a recent Fisk University graduate.Harris says he is motivated to get more members of African American communities to have their voices heard and their votes counted.“A lot of people don’t vote because they don’t see the point, they don’t understand why it’s so important,” he said.Many members in the local African American community do understand the importance of this election and are calling this political movement inspiring.“Us Black folks are still fighting. It’s time for a change, man,” said Norman T.
