BEIJING, April 13 (Xinhua) -- China's housing authorities on Monday urged local governments to put more efforts into the building of low-income housing.The national goal for 2010 is to build 3 million apartments for low-income families, renovate 2.8 million in urban shantytown areas, and expand renovation of dilapidated houses in rural areas, an unidentified official with the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development (MOHURD) told a teleconference.The ministry urged governments at all levels to strictly implement preferential policies in land provision, funding, tax reduction and credit support for low-income housing projects, to ensure the realization of the annual construction goals.MOHURD also called for efforts to curb the precipitous rise of housing prices in some cities by increasing the supply of small and medium-sized houses and to rein in the speculation on rising house prices.
BEIJING, June 1 (Xinhua) -- China Tuesday released details of its green-car subsidy program designed to boost the nation's auto industry and cut vehicle emissions.Through the program, subsidies of up to 60,000 yuan (8,784 U.S. dollars) will be given to buyers of pure electric vehicles in the five cities chosen for the pilot program, the Ministry of Finance said in a statement on its website.Buyers of plug-in hybrid cars will receive up to 50,000 yuan in subsidies.The cities chosen for the pilot program are Shanghai, Changchun, Shenzhen, Hangzhou and Hefei.China is the world's largest auto market.

GUANGZHOU, May 16 (Xinhua) -- A senior official of the Communist Party of China (CPC) has called for more efforts in improving the country's innovation capabilities to accelerate the transformation of economic growth pattern.Li Changchun, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, made the remarks while making an inpsection tour to south China's Guangdong Province from Thursday to Sunday."Indigenous innovation is the way out for an expedited transformation of the economic growth pattern," said Li, who told the local government officials to persist in the transformation of the economic growth pattern as a key element and strategic step in implementing the scientific outlook on development.Li called on the local authorities to make great efforts in expanding the culture sector and get inspriration from doing so to keep improving quality and efficiency of economic development, trying hard to find new ways for China's sound and fast development of economy and society in the post-crisis era after the global financial downturn.Li hoped Guangdong to pay equal emphasis on construction of iconic cultural projects and on building of cultural life at grassroots level. BEIJING, April 13 (Xinhua) -- China's top economic planner said late Tuesday it would raise prices of gasoline and diesel both by 320 yuan (46.88 U.S. dollars) per tonne from April 14.This comes as the first such move in nearly five months since it raised gasoline and diesel prices both by 480 yuan per tonne in November 2009.The benchmark price of gasoline will be 7420 yuan per tonne and diesel 6680 yuan per tonne, according to the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC).The price rises translate into mark-ups of 0.24 yuan and 0.27 yuan per liter, the measurement used at service stations in China. BEIJING, May 10 (Xinhua) -- Tao Dayong, a well-known Chinese economist and also honorary vice chairman of the ninth Central Committee of China Democratic League (CDL), has died of illness at the age of 93.President Hu Jintao, Premier Wen Jiabao and other senior leaders, including Jia Qinglin, Li Changchun, Xi Jinping, Li Keqiang and Zhou Yongkang, expressed their condolences.Tao, a native of Shanghai, graduated in 1940 from the Department of Economics of the Nanjing-based Central University.He joined the China Democratic League in 1947 and became chief editor of the Economic Weekly, a magazine published by the Hong Kong-based Chinese language newspaper Wen Wei Po in 1949.Tao was a member of the sixth, seventh, and eighth National People's Congress Standing Committee and a member of the Standing Committee of the Sixth National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference.
