SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Legoland debuted a new land for youngsters as well as a train attraction for park guests Thursday.Park officials welcomed in the addition of Duplo Playtown and a new mini-locomotive in a ribbon cutting with families from Ronald McDonald House Charities. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Merritte Powell hired six new people once his downtown restaurant got the green light to serve indoors again.But now, those workers could be in for some bad news. The three or four shifts they thought they’d get each week at La Puerta could instead be reduced to one, if that.“The hardest part is just the emotions and the mental health of the people working in the industry,” Powell said.It’s because San Diego County is in danger of falling into the state’s most restrictive purple tier of coronavirus restrictions, which would ban restaurants from serving indoors. That would be the latest setback in the region's push to return to normal amid the outbreak.“It feels like they're just playing games with us at this point, and it's getting frustrating,” Powell said.The twists and turns are taking a big toll, not just on day-to-day operations, but also when it comes to hiring in the future.“You're not going to hire people back, you're being extremely cautious,” said Ray Major, SANDAG’s chief economist.Major said restaurant owners have it especially hard. Not only do they have to be concerned with whether they can break even, but also if a future move into a less restrictive tier would only be temporary."We're really going to have to get into the orange or the yellow tier, and we're going to have to be able to stay there, and businesses are going to have to have the confidence that we're not going to shut them down again before they start rehiring people," Major said.SANDAG says the region's jobless rate was 13.3%, with 226,000 unemployed workers as of Sept. 5. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Last month, investigators arrested a 72-year-old man suspected of being the Golden State Killer. It could be the dramatic end of a four decades old search for the suspect.Which got us thinking, whatever happened to the cold case of the “Geezer Bandit” who may not even be a senior citizen anyway? And, could advanced technology ever help find him?He was the most elusive senior citizen during a two-year crime spree. The bank robber the FBI nicknamed the “Geezer Bandit” because of his geriatric appearance.The “Geezer”, who may have been a much younger person using a professional grade prosthetic mask, robbed 16 banks from San Diego to San Luis Obispo from 2009 to 2011. 11 of those robberies happened in San Diego County. “Profiling as you understand now is a pretty big spectrum,” says Jack Hamlin.Hamlin is a Professor at National University and professional criminal profiler. We asked him how this person, seven years later, has become the modern-day D.B. Cooper and why he, or she, would simply vanish.“We have an expression in law enforcement, we only catch the dumb ones,” says Hamlin.The “Geezer” was one of the best. Performing almost mistake free and seemingly very sophisticated. The mask may not have been his only disguise, and he was said to wear gloves, there was no known getaway vehicle, the robberies were during off-peak hours and with little security. And five of his robberies were on a Friday, payday. So, we asked the question, ‘Is it possible this person had some law enforcement training?’“It’s certainly somebody that understands how things work,” added Hamlin.  “These robberies weren’t random. He’s figured out a time when security is low; he’s figured out a time when there’s going to be plenty of cash, Friday.”The “Geezer developed a cult following with thousands of followers on Facebook. T-shirts are still available celebrating ‘Geezer Bandit for President.’ But his last robbery was December of 2011. That's the only time a dye pack was used, exploding and making the money useless, and possibly his disguise too. We haven’t heard from the “Geezer” since.“I don’t see this person suddenly having an epiphany and saying, ‘It’s over with. I don’t need to do it anymore,’” says a skeptical Hamlin.Hamlin says people like this need the rush and rarely just quit. But the one mistake the “Geezer” made on that final robbery was dropping a day-planner which he carried as part of his disguise. If it holds his DNA, Hamlin says there may be an option to use a genealogy website like investigators did to catch the person they believe is the Golden State Killer.“Now you’ve got this public DNA base, and if there is some way they can tap into that, um, the skies the limit on some of these cases,” says Hamlin.UPDATE: The FBI tells 10News there has been no change in this case since the last attempted robbery in 2011. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Loved ones are mourning the loss of a City Heights man and longtime professional wrestler to COVID-19.In the wrestling ring, Martin Rodriguez was known as "Espantito," or "The Terror." He donned a mask and black-and-white tights and had a knack for performing seamless moves.In early September, the man known for his strength felt tired and then developed a cough and fever. A few weeks later, he was having trouble breathing and was taken to the ER."He went in with pneumonia and was then diagnosed with COVID-19," said his daughter Barbara Rodriguez.Barbara says a few days later, he was placed on a ventilator. About three weeks later, Martin, a husband and father of two, died at the age of 53."He gave me strength, gave me guidance, and helped me become the person I am today. Knowing I won't have him for the future is painful," said Barbara.The man she knew as her loving, caring father stood in contrast to the character inside the ring. After several years in Mexico's famed AAA Lucha Libre in the early 90s, Rodriguez moved to San Diego and became a freelancer, wrestling in leagues in Southern California, Canada, and Mexico. He was always the bad guy and he loved it."Hyped him up even more. He loved entertaining people, making them laugh and feeling emotion," said Barbara.Since the pandemic began, his matches had been canceled. He owns a landscaping business and was taking all the COVID-19 precautions. Barbara doesn't know how he contracted the virus."I just want people to be safe. Wear a mask. The Hotel Del Coronado has been a landmark of America's Finest City since 1888.While its walls are steeped in history, recently, rumors swirled that a face-changing paint job to the hotel's lobby was coming.Facebook users on the "Coronado Happenings" page voiced worries that the iconic hotel planned to paint its wood-finished lobby white.Do you have a fact or fiction question?
