(KGTV) - Border officials highlighted their accomplishments Friday, saying the past year has hit some benchmarks."The past year has taken a tremendous toll on our agency, our agents and their families," Kathleen Scudder, Acting Chief Patrol Agent for the San Diego Sector said, referring to the thousands of migrants who traveled to the U.S.-Mexico Border in San Diego County.While a nearly 14-mile stretch of new bollard fencing was completed in August, from the beach to Otay Mountain, officials said their agents faced more attacks compared to the previous fiscal year."There were a total of 156 assaults on agents while performing their duties, agents endured 72 assaults the prior fiscal year," Scudder said.While arrests at the border have been down the last six months, drug smuggling has shifted to the water, Scudder said. Agents seized 3,273 pounds of marijuana, 1,284 pounds of cocaine, 3,918 pounds of methamphetamine, 288 pounds of heroin and 108 pounds of fentanyl "that could provide a fatal dose to 24 million people."Customs and Border Protection Agents shifted their role over the past year, providing much needed humanitarian aid for migrants from caravans. While agents faced national scrutiny for their treatment of migrants, Scudder described a show of kindness."Our agents persevered, often bringing items from their homes to care for small children and babies in their custody," she said.She described an act of heroism where an agent found two boys who were lost near Chula Vista. He found one of the boys unconscious, suffering from hypothermia. He wrapped the boy in his coat and hugged him, to provide body warmth until help arrived. The boy recovered and went home six weeks later.Scudder said she expects the downward trend in illegal border crossings to continue, thanks to the wall, agreements with agencies and Mexico, and Migrant Protection Protocol in place. (KGTV) - Bedbugs, the bane of many homeowners, were discovered lurking inside several San Diego County buildings last week.10News was tipped off to a bedbug infestation at a county building: the Agricultural Weights and Measures building in San Marcos.The county confirmed to 10News, bedbugs were found there and another building from the same department in Kearny Mesa.  As for how it happened, a county spokesperson revealed only that an employee is the cause and public areas were not affected.Workers from the Agricultural Weights and Measures Department, which provides pest control for the county, have laid traps, monitored for bed bugs, and moved employees to a separate area.Garrett Thrasher is Vice President of Thrasher Pest Control.  He says the typical plan of attack could also involve K9 alerting, vacuuming, steam cleaning and sometimes chemical treatments."From there, it's weekly checks to make sure there is no new activity or complaint," said Thrasher.Thrasher says bedbug calls have been increasing over the last few months and are slightly up from the same time last year. 1161

Seattle Mayor Jenny Durkan told protesters occupying several city blocks they are in no danger of being invaded by the federal government despite comments from President Donald Trump saying he is ready to “take back” the city.The protesters, who have seized control of Seattle’s East Precinct police station, are pushing the city to make significant reforms to policing. After days of unrest, at times becoming violent, the protests have largely not been violent since protesters have declared the area an “autonomous zone.”The protesters are among those calling for police reforms in the wake of George Floyd's death. SAN MARCOS, Calif. (KGTV) - A local portable toilet rental company is charged with tampering with equipment on its trucks to skirt emissions regulations. Employees also allegedly faked some of the smog test results.Team 10 Investigative Reporter Jennifer Kastner went to San Marcos’ Diamond Environmental Services on Friday afternoon, but was asked to leave. 10News was looking for answers to the alarming accusations that the company and some of its employees were committing crimes against the environment. Part of a video on the company’s website states, “Diamond's dedication to doing the right thing goes above and beyond.” Yet prosecutors say Diamond was preparing false smog test results to get passing results. Additionally, executives were allegedly tampering with emission control devices on its diesel truck fleet, re-programming the emission monitoring devices to avoid extra costs that come with burning off dirty, soot-filled diesel filters. Ed Rodriguez is the owner of Auto Park Smog in Escondido. He says, “If you’ve ever seen a vehicle going down the road, like a truck, and it has black smoke coming out of it, that’s all soot and that's not good.” Rodriguez says he's worked on Diamond's smaller trucks but not the ones that are part of this new six count federal indictment. The U.S. Attorney’s Office claims that Diamond took the devices out of trucks and shipped them out of California to be re-programmed. SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — The University of California has accepted a record number of freshmen and transfer students that includes the most ever from California for the 2019-20 academic year.The university system said Monday its nine undergraduate campuses accepted 71,655 California freshmen and 26,700 students who will transfer from California community colleges. That's more than 3,200 California students than last year.UC schools have been under pressure to accept California residents so they can have a cheaper way to complete a four-year degree at the state's top public universities.Nearly 218,000 prospective undergraduates applied for at least one UC school for fall 2019 during the application period that ended Nov. 30, according to figures released by the university system.
