NEW YORK — Whether you thought SantaCon was naughty or nice, New Yorkers can check the annual bar crawl off their list this year.The organizers of SantaCon NYC have announced the event will not take place this year due to the coronavirus pandemic.“2020: The year there was no SantaCon. Remain home and stay on the Good List! We are all in this together so to keep the spirit alive, we have to socially distance and wear a mask. Looking forward to 2021,” an announcement on the official website says.Tha annual event calls on participants to dress up as Santa, elves or other Christmas creatures from the North Pole for a city-wide bar crawl. NORTH FORT MYERS, Fla. -- Orlando Ortega posted a Facebook video of his now-former co-worker, Eileen Marcinkowski, calling him the N-word Sunday. The video has more than 150,000 views.But the owner of the restaurant where the incident took place said the video doesn't tell the whole story. “The lady in the video he actually did hit. She had blood on her face, she was bleeding," said Jane Thursfield, owner of Cactus Jack. Thursfield said Ortega provoked the fight when he punched Marcinkowski in the face after he was let go by the restaurant. Scripps station WFTX in Fort Myers could see no evidence of blood on Marcinkowski's face in the Facebook video. The owner said even if Marcinkowski was provoked, the racial comments were not OK. “No, no, of course not," Thursfield said. "No, we don’t condone that at all.”Other customers, like Johnny Samz, who said he regularly eats at Cactus Jack, agreed. “I don’t think it’s ever good, for anybody to use the N-word," said Samz. "I don’t care what the circumstances are.” WFTX's Jasmine Minor asked since Ortego no longer worked at the restaurant, if Marcinkowski would face the same fate. “She is still working here, yeah," said Thursfield. "I have not been here long and she’s working, but we will obviously address that.” The owner said the incident took place "off-the-clock" and "off business property." She still plans on addressing the issue with her entire staff. Ortega conducted a Facebook live, Sunday night, where he said he "absolutely did not provoke anything" and said he plans on filing a discriminatory lawsuit.  1752

New results on a possible COVID-19 vaccine from Oxford University and drugmaker AstraZeneca suggest it is safe and about 70% effective.Some experts say that shows it is likely to win approval, but questions remain about how well it may help protect those over 55. That's a key concern for a vaccine that health officials hope to rely on around the world because of its low cost, availability and ease of use.Partial results from tests of the vaccine in the United Kingdom, Brazil and South Africa were published Tuesday by the medical journal Lancet.“Today, we have published the interim analysis of the Phase III trial and show that this new vaccine has a good safety record and efficacy against the coronavirus,” said Professor Andrew Pollard, Director of the Oxford Vaccine Group and Chief Investigator of the Oxford Vaccine Trial. “We are hugely grateful to our trial volunteers for working with us over the past eight months to bring us to this milestone.”Researchers claim the vaccine protected against disease in 62% of those given two full doses and in 90% of those initially given the half dose. However, independent experts have said the second group was too small — 2,741 people — to judge the possible value of that approach and more testing is needed.The interim analysis for efficacy was based on 11,636 participants accruing 131 symptomatic infections from the Phase III trials.In addition to the Oxford led program, AstraZeneca is conducting a large study in the US and globally. In total, Oxford University and AstraZeneca expect to enroll more than 60,000 participants globally.The company says it’s also making progress in manufacturing with a capacity of up to 3 billion doses of the vaccine in 2021 on a rolling basis, pending regulatory approval. NEW YORK (AP) — Microsoft said Friday it is permanently closing nearly all of its physical stores around the world.Like other retailers, the software and computing giant had to temporarily close all of its stores in late March due to the COVID-19 pandemic.Microsoft has 83 stores, including 72 stores in the U.S., where it showcases and sells laptops and other hardware.The company says it will "reimagine" spaces that serve all customers, including operating Microsoft Experience Centers in London, NYC, Sydney, and Redmond campus locations.Friday’s announcement reflects what the company calls a “strategic change” for its retail business as sales increasingly shift online.Microsoft said all employees would have the opportunity to remain with the company. Retail workers will continue to serve customers from corporate facilities and remotely, providing sales, training and support.Microsoft says it will continue to invest in its digital storefronts on Microsoft.com, and stores in Xbox and Windows, reaching more than 1.2 billion people every month in 190 markets.“Our sales have grown online as our product portfolio has evolved to largely digital offerings, and our talented team has proven success serving customers beyond any physical location,” said Microsoft Corporate Vice President David Porter. “We are grateful to our Microsoft Store customers and we look forward to continuing to serve them online and with our retail sales team at Microsoft corporate locations.” 1488
