All most people wanted for Christmas after this year of pandemic uncertainty, and sadness was some cheer and togetherness.Instead, many are heading into a season of isolation, grieving lost loved ones, worried about their jobs, or confronting the fear of a potentially more contagious variant of the coronavirus.Residents of London can't see people outside their households.Peruvians won't be allowed to drive their cars over Christmas and New Year to discourage visits.South Africans won't be able to go to the beach over Christmas.According to the Associated Press, when it comes to eating on Christmas, officials in France recommend eating with no more than six people. In Chile, it's 15, and in Brazil, it's as many as you want. The patchwork of restrictions imposed by local and national governments across the world varies widely — but few holiday seasons will look normal this year.Although there aren't travel restrictions in the U.S., the CDC has urged people not to travel. AAA projects that as many as 84.5 million Americans might travel during the week of Christmas up to Jan. 3.With Christmas just days away, some states require visitors to quarantine or test negative before visiting their states.Suppose you travel to Alaska, Colorado, Connecticut, D.C., Hawaii, Maine, Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire, New York, Pennsylvania, or Rhode Island. In that case, you have the option of presenting a negative COVID-19 test within 72 hours before entering the state or quarantine. If visiting California, Kansas, Kentucky, Maryland, Montana, New Jersey, New Mexico, North Carolina, Ohio, Oregon, South Dakota, Vermont, Washington, or Wisconsin, you are requested or required to self-quarantine for up to 14 days upon arriving. The CDC recommends celebrating virtually or with your household members, which is considered the lowest risk of spreading COVID-19. 1875

After three days of speeches from the Democratic Party's top brass, Thursday marks the convention's highlight — Joe Biden's acceptance speech for the party nomination.Biden will deliver his acceptance speech from his home state of Delaware — a speech he's been waiting to give for more than 30 years. Biden first ran for president in the 1988 cycle and ran again in 2008 — which eventually landed him the role of Vice President. While many national polls show Biden holding a double-digit lead over Trump, but Biden has mostly shied away from the spotlight during the general election cycle, preferring to hold virtual campaign events from his home amid the pandemic. With an audience of millions tuning in, Biden will face the most high-profile test of his campaign to date.Biden will also be competing for airtime against his general election opponent, President Donald Trump, who scheduled an interview on Fox News during the 9 p.m. hour — just as the DNC is getting underway for the evening.Several of Biden's opponents in the 2020 Democratic primaries will deliver speeches ahead of him this evening, including former South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg, former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Sen. Corey Booker (D-New Jersey).Thursday's program will also feature rising female stars in the party, like Sen. Tammy Duckworth (D-Illinois) and Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms.John Legend, Common and The Chicks (formerly known as the Dixie Chicks) will offer musical performances during Thursday's event.See a full schedule of Thursday's speeches and performances below.“This Time Next Year”A "collection of everyday Americans and prominent leaders" describe where they want the country to be a year from now.Remarks by 2020 presidential candidate Andrew YangIntroductionActress Julia-Louis DreyfusPledge of AllegianceLed by Cedric Richmond, Jr., son of Rep. After America reached the grim milestone of more than 10 million positive coronavirus cases in just 10 months, healthcare systems in multiple areas around the country are warning their hospital bed capacity is nearing or at 100 percent full.In North Dakota, the governor said this week their hospitals have reached their limit, and depending how the next few weeks go, facilities could be pushed past their capabilities. He issued an urgent plea asking residents to take steps to slow the spread of the coronavirus. He also amended a state order to allow asymptomatic health care workers who test positive for COVID-19 to continue working in COVID-19 units of a healthcare facility.“Our hospitals are under enormous pressure now,” Governor Doug Burgum said. “We can see the future two, three weeks out, and we know that we have severe constraints.”Bergum is asking that businesses and events or gatherings be reduced to 25 percent or a max of 50 people, and said face coverings should be required. However, he did not issue a statewide mask mandate. In Iowa, UnityPoint Health Des Moines, which runs four hospitals in the capital city, says they are at capacity and all their beds are full.Polk County, where Des Moines is located, saw the most new hospitalizations on one day Monday, with 191 new coronavirus patients. The county has issued a “plea to our community to please help in our fight against COVID-19.” They say they are “facing bed shortages and staffing shortages,” and ask people to wear a mask, wash hands, and practice social distancing so the healthcare system does not become overwhelmed. On Monday, the Iowa Health Department said there were more than 1,100 people hospitalized in the state with coronavirus. Iowa has a total of about 2,800 inpatient hospital beds available, with 382 of them in intensive care units spread around the state.Hospitalizations around the country have nearly doubled since late September. Tuesday morning, roughly 59,000 Americans were in the hospital because of the coronavirus.Health experts are worried about the recent spike in coronavirus cases. They are widespread across the country, and not focused on a handful of “epicenters” like there were earlier this spring and summer. This means resources like staff and equipment cannot be shuffled around to the places that need it, because everywhere is overwhelmed. 2370

Airports were busy this holiday weekend, according to the Transportation Security Administration.TSA says it screened almost a million people on Friday, a record-high since the pandemic began. In comparison, they saw double that number the year before. The TSA says they saw fewer people on Saturday, only about 500,000 people traveled that day. 351

According to multiple reports, Amtrak is planning to furlough nearly 2,000 workers beginning Oct. 1.According to USA Today, the railroad company sent a letter to employees on Tuesday, detailing that 1,950 union workers and 100 management positions would be furloughed. In May, the company sent Congress a letter, stating it needed close to .5 billion in supplemental funds and disclosed plans to furloughing employees in the coming budget year. The New York Times reported that ridership has fallen by 95 percent since March, and projected revenue for 2021 declined by 50 percent. 588
