LEXINGTON, Ky. -- A teenager died Sunday after being shot at a mall in Lexington, Kentucky. The Fayette County Coroner's Office identified the victim as 17-year-old Kenneth Wayne Bottoms Jr., of Lexington. Bottoms was transported UK Medical Center at about 4 p.m where he was pronounced dead at 6:10 p.m.Two other victims were also injured in the shooting, which police say happened in front of a Bath and Body Works at Fayette Mall. She says she witnessed an argument outside of the shop that escalated when someone pulled out a gun."Held it up at face level... and he shot four shots off," said the shopper.The shopper, who wished to remain anonymous, says she was escorted with others toward the back of the store."We stayed in the bathroom until police got us out of the service door to Bath and Body Works, and they walked us around all of the blood to take us outside," said the shopper.Mark Thomas was inside his shop, Bourbon Creek, when he saw a group of people run by with sheer panic on their faces. His store was packed at the time, so the retired Lexington police detective quickly jumped into action."We had several customers that were wanting to leave, and we have a back door into the parking lot, so we were able to help evacuate people through the store. LIMA, Peru (AP) — Archaeologists in northern Peru say they have found evidence of what could be the world's largest single case of child sacrifice.The pre-Columbian burial site, known as Las Llamas, contains the skeletons of 140 children who were between the ages of five and 14 when they were ritually sacrificed during a ceremony about 550 years ago, experts who led the excavation told The Associated Press on Friday.The site, located near the modern day city of Trujillo, also contained the remains of 200 young llamas apparently sacrificed on the same day.The burial site was apparently built by the ancient Chimu empire. It is thought the children were sacrificed as floods caused by the El Nino weather pattern ravaged the Peruvian coastline."They were possibly offering the gods the most important thing they had as a society, and the most important thing is children because they represent the future," said Gabriel Prieto, an archaeology professor at Peru's National University of Trujillo, who has led the excavation, along with John Verano of Tulane University."Llamas were also very important because these people had no other beasts of burden, they were a fundamental part of the economy," Prieto said, adding that the children were buried facing the sea, while the llamas faced the Andes Mountains to the east.Excavation work at the burial site started in 2011, but news of the findings was first published on Thursday by National Geographic, which helped finance the investigation.Prieto said that besides the bones, researchers also found footprints that have survived rain and erosion. The small footprints indicate the children were marched to their deaths from Chan Chan, an ancient city a mile away from Las Llamas, he said.Verano said the children's skeletons contained lesions on their breastbones, which were probably made by a ceremonial knife. Dislocated ribcages suggest that whoever was performing the sacrifices may have been trying to extract the children's hearts.Jeffrey Quilter, the director of the Peabody Museum of Archaeology & Ethnology at Harvard University, described it as a "remarkable discovery."In an email, Quilter told the AP the site provides "concrete evidence" that large scale sacrifices of children occurred in ancient Peru."Reports of very large sacrifices are known from other parts of the world, but it is difficult to know if the numbers are exaggerated or not," Quilter wrote.Quilter is heading a team of scientists who will analyze DNA samples from the children's remains to see if they were related and figure out which areas of the Chimu empire the sacrificed youth came from.Several ancient cultures in the Americas practiced human sacrifices including the Mayans, the Aztecs and the Incas, who conquered the Chimu empire in the late 15th century. But the mass sacrifice of children is something that has rarely been documented.The Las Llamas site is located in a shantytown, and has been fenced off to stop illegal developers from building homes on it.Prieto says the site shows how in Peru history can be just around the corner."This site surrounded by houses in a working class neighborhood can tell us a lot about a macabre event that is perhaps one of the darkest moments in our history," Prieto said. (KGTV) - Hundreds of La Mesa neighbors came out to clean up and board up businesses Sunday morning.Albert's Fresh Mexican Food owner Albert Garzon said he saw his business get destroyed Saturday night, "there's nothing you can do about it but just watch, it was just so much chaos and just people running left and right."He said when he came back his business was being boarded up by volunteers. "Under the circumstances with the COVID to make matters worse for all these poor business owners that are barely making ends meet before this even started," Garzon said.The entire La Mesa Springs Shopping Center was covered in boards, provided by a local construction company, Meram Building."Before I even got here my business was clean, it was so many volunteers and I was, literally I had tears in my eyes," Chintu Patel, Owner of Menchie's, said.Both Patel and Garzon were thankful to see support, their heartbreak replaced with gratitude and a sense of perseverance."What the people of La Mesa have come out to do for their community is priceless and that's why we're keeping strong and we're La Mesa strong," Garzon said.Neighbors swept up glass, threw out trash and did anything that was needed. (CNS) - Four teenagers who allegedly assaulted a cab driver outside a La Mesa restaurant early Wednesday and stole his taxi while threatening him with a gun were arrested a short time later after abandoning the vehicle in a remote industrial area about six miles away, police reported.The group of youths called for a cab shortly before 1 a.m. at Denny's in the 6900 block of Alvarado Road in La Mesa, just east of San Diego State University, according to police.After boarding the Blue Star Cab vehicle, the quartet began quarreling over the fare, Lt. Greg Runge said. Two of them then punched the driver, prompting him to jump out of the taxi, the lieutenant said.At that point, one of the teens got behind the wheel of the cab, pointed a handgun at the victim and drove off, Runge said.Using signals from a GPS-tracking device in the stolen cab, police tracked the vehicle down it in the 10700 block of US Elevator Road in Spring Valley about 20 minutes later. The taxi was unoccupied, but a gun had been left behind inside, the lieutenant said.Officers searched the area with help from a sheriff's helicopter, soon capturing the suspects within a block of the abandoned taxi. The victim and a witness positively identified the group as the alleged perpetrators in a curbside lineup.Arrested were Jaden Razell Jones of Spring Valley and Kaitlyn Arianna Gendleman of El Cajon, both 19; 18-year-old Jacob Ronald Jensen of El Cajon; and a 17-year-old boy. LA MESA (KGTV) -- It was a frustrating flight for one mother in La Mesa, who said an airline would not allow her to sit next to her toddler without forking over extra cash.Aliss, who declined to use her last name, said she chose seats together when she booked her ticket through a third-party website. Aliss and her son, Kai, were travelling from Providence, Rhode Island back to San Diego with a layover in Minneapolis. When she got to the airport in Providence, her seat on her Sun Country Airlines flight was not next to her child.“I would have never booked a flight where we couldn’t sit together,” Aliss said. She said her options were limited and that the representative with the airline said she could charge her a fee.“I can’t pay that. What else can we do? And she said, well for I can move you guys in a row front and back of each other. I said that doesn’t help my problem. He’s still not sitting next to me,” Aliss said. She said she told the airline representative not to charge her the money, but she was charged anyway. She said she did not get help from anyone with the airline, including the flight attendant. “She said no, you’re on your own. You’ll just have to argue with people,” Aliss said. Fortunately, a grandmother ended up giving up her seat so Aliss could sit with Kai. That was only the beginning of her problems. From Minneapolis to San Diego, Aliss’ flight was delayed. At first, it was only three hours.“No big deal,” she said. She tried keeping Kai entertained and saw many other parents in a similar situation. The three hour delay became much longer with passengers unclear on when they were going to leave. “It was confusing, frustrating,” Aliss said.
