SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A 13-year old girl, waiting for her mother to pick her up in Grant Hill, was attacked by a knife-wielding man Friday afternoon.San Diego Police are now using surveillance videos in their search for the suspect, who yanked a gold necklace from the teen's neck before making his getaway near the intersection of 26th and K Street. The girl wasn't hurt, but parents like Elizabeth Alvarado, whose twin 12-year-old daughters walk by that same spot each day, are hoping he doesn't strike again.Alvarado saw surveillance video after the principal of her daughters' school sent parents a link, suggesting they talk to their kids about staying safe.Andy Trakas of Albert Einstein Charter Middle School said the girl who was attacked wasn't one of his students, but there are several other schools in the neighborhood."We decided to be very, very proactive because the safety of our students," said Trakas, adding that all children in the community are a concern."These things can happen anywhere," Trakas said. "They can happen in La Jolla, they can happen in City Heights, they can happen in Del Sur or La Mesa, whatever, but, by being part of the community we can all work together to make sure that our eyes and ears are open so we can find out who this person is and make this place a better, safer community for our kids."Trakas suggested parents talk to their kids about being aware of their surroundings and the importance of staying in groups, not alone, after school. San Diego Police stepped up patrols in Grant Hill after school and are following every lead to catch the thief. The suspect is describe as a black male five feet, eight inches tall with a stocky build who was wearing a plain black hooded sweatshirt, a black cloth covering the lower portion of his face and dark-colored pants. Authorities say the suspect was driving a white Hyundai Elantra  (pictured below.) 1919

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- 33 San Diego County elementary schools were honored under the Distinguished Schools Program by State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson Monday. The program, which returned this year after a three-year break, replaces the California Gold Ribbon Schools Program.Schools were eligible based on test scores, suspension rates and English learner progress.Among those listed: Veterans Elementary (Chula Vista Elementary District), Green Elementary (San Diego Unified School District), Garfield Elementary (San Diego Unified School District), Monterey Ridge Elementary (Poway Unified), Ocean View Hills (San Ysidro Elementary), and Solana Pacific Elementary.“These schools implement outstanding educational programs and practices that help California students realize their potential, and put them on the path to achieve their dreams,” Torlakson said.“Every day at these schools, teachers, administrators and classified employees, working with parents, apply their dedication, creativity, and talents toward providing a great education for all their students.”According to the California Department of Education website, California is using a multiple measures accountability system to identify eligible schools based on their performance and progress on the state indicators as specified on the California School Dashboard. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – A catholic priest overseeing a mission in San Diego has been granted temporary relief from the state's COVID-19 restrictions on in-person worship. On Friday, ABC 10News spoke to the attorney representing Father Trevor Burfitt in his legal fight to reopen his Southern California parishes, including St. John Bosco Mission inside the Four Points Sheraton hotel off the 163 and Aero Drive. On Thursday, a Kern County judge issued a preliminary injunction protecting Father Burfitt's churches from COVID-19 restrictions but the ruling does not apply to all churches in the state.“Under the existing blueprint for a safer economy, all of [his] churches are subject or were subject to a total worship ban until the court's ruling yesterday,” said attorney Christopher Ferrara. He added, “That ruling has overturned those restrictions and the churches are now free to operate.”On Friday, San Diego County Supervisor Jim Desmond said that he supported the ruling and added in part, “I think and I always have thought that churches are essential, particularly in these times of high anxiety with having to deal with COVID.”The new ruling stems from a recent lawsuit that Father Burfitt filed against Governor Gavin Newsom and other state and local officials over lockdown measures. The judge ruled in part, "The restrictions at issue here, by effectively barring many from attending religious services, strike at the very heart of the first amendment's guarantee of religious liberty. Before allowing this to occur, we have a duty to conduct a serious examination of the need for such a drastic measure." The ruling goes on to read in part, "The free exercise of religion clause in the California constitution prohibits defendants from treating religious activities worse than comparable secular activities. California's current COVID-related restrictions do exactly that."“Right now, I would say that this decision provides guidance to the public authorities throughout the state and they should follow it,” added Ferrara.Father Burfitt is seeking a permanent injunction. The next hearing is scheduled for March.ABC 10News reached out to Gov. Newsom’s office for comment. We are waiting for a reply. 2216

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A driver crashed his Mercedes-Benz through an underground parking garage gate, causing the gate to fall onto his car and leaving the vehicle -- and himself -- trapped at the entrance. The incident was reported at around 2:30 a.m. Tuesday at an apartment complex in the 4300 block of Menlo Avenue, according to San Diego police. With the large gate on top of the car, responding officers helped the driver out of his vehicle.ABC 10News learned the man was treated by medics at the scene but was also being evaluated for possible DUI. He did not appear to be seriously hurt. It's unclear why the driver was attempting to enter the parking garage since he reportedly told police he does not live in the apartment complex. 743
