SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – Two U.S. Army Special Operations soldiers were killed and three others were injured during an aircraft incident, a U.S. Army official confirmed.The incident happened around 7 p.m. Thursday evening during what was described by a U.S. Army Special Operations Command public affairs officer as “routine training.”Department of Defense officials confirmed a Blackhawk helicopter crashed on or near San Clemente Island. An Army Public Affairs Officer sent ABC 10News a statement reading: “An element of U.S. Army Special Operations Command was conducting routine training in the vicinity of Coronado, California, on August 27, when an aircraft incident occurred. Two Soldiers were killed and three were injured. The area has been secured and an investigation into the incident is underway. More information will be released 24-hours following next of kin notification. Our sincere condolences go out the families and friends of the deceased. We thank you for not contacting them during this difficult time.”ABC 10News learned the soldiers were taken to Scripps Memorial Hospital following the incident.Brian MacPherson saw the helicopters land at the hospital, "I knew something was really really wrong ... My mind immediately went to sympathy for that soldier because I knew a sacrifice had been made."He said the first responders ran out with a gurney, "it looked like one of the doctors jumping on the gurney, straddling the injured soldier and providing CPR that is just something dramatic it caused me tears driving to work, just thinking about the sacrifice that our military is making even in training.""It saddens me that some of our elite members that are sent to protect our freedoms were injured in training, preparing for the ultimate sacrifice which in this case two of them made for us," he said.Just last month, on July 30, another military training accident occurred off the coast of San Clemente Island when an amphibious assault vehicle accident began to take on water and sank, killing nine service members.ABC 10News will update this story as more information becomes available. 2120

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – Two bystanders were hurt in a shooting Saturday evening in Paradise Hills.San Diego Police said two Hispanic men were shooting at each other around 5:30 p.m. in the 2300 block of Reo Dr. 10News spoke to witness Jauhn Hinkle, who was waiting to get his hair cut at the Fade Factory across the street. “Small caliber pops started going off across the street. I saw a muzzle flash,” he said. Hinkle said the fight began near the corner of Reo Drive and Cumberland Street. It escalated, as the two began to yell obscenities. Then one of the men started to chase the other while shooting at him. Hinkle recalled seeing five or six shots, all of which seemed to miss the intended target. Instead, two innocent bystanders were hurt. A bullet hit a 15-year-old boy in the thigh, and shrapnel hit a 48-year-old woman in the leg, police said.Hinkle ran toward the woman, who took cover in the La Palapa Market. “I asked where she was shot. She didn't know because of adrenaline and shock. She was on the phone screaming,” Hinkle said. The woman was transported to the hospital from the scene. The 15-year-old boy was transported to a different hospital, at a later time, San Diego Police said. Both suffered non-life threatening injuries.Hinkle said it is disappointing to see his neighborhood be the scene of a violent crime.  “Project Reo is doing an excellent job. Shout out to them," Hinkle said. "We want this place to pick up. and I think it is, so it's not reflective of what this neighborhood is like.”The shooters ran away. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A woman was arrested Monday afternoon after police say she stole a vehicle with two children inside.Police say Rodney Cole left his 3-year-old son and 8-year-old daughter in his car with the engine and air conditioner running around noon on the 200 block of Euclid Avenue.After he went into a business, a witness reported seeing a woman, later identified as Leslie Saenz, get into the car and drive away with the children inside.Monday night Cole explained the terrifying ordeal to 10News.His 8-year-old daughter, Malaiha, told police she was able to call the police and tell dispatchers that she and her brother Jackson had been kidnapped. "They said, '911 whats your emergency?' and I said, 'me and my little brother got kidnapped,'" Malaiha said. "and (police) said, 'where are you and what can you see?' and I said, 'signs for the Mexico border.'""(The woman) tried to take the phone away from me but I moved away from her, and she said, 'give it to me, or I’m going to drive in circles and take this car and crash into the freeway wall.'"That's when she gave the phone to the woman, but the police acted quickly.  Roughly 30 minutes later after the car was stolen, Border Patrol detained the woman as she was trying to cross the border into Mexico.  Police have since taken Saenz into custody.Cole told 10News he bought the phone for the kids a few months ago, but it's not an activated line. He taught Malaiha how to call 911 on the phone, in case of emergencies. "I'm very proud of her," he said. 1616
