BEIJING, Oct. 27 (Xinhua) -- The body of Peng Chong, a senior Chinese legislator and political advisor, was cremated at Beijing's Babaoshan Revolutionary Cemetery on Wednesday.President Hu Jintao, top legislator Wu Bangguo, Premier Wen Jiabao, and state and Party leaders Jia Qinglin, Li Changchun, Xi Jinping, Li Keqiang and He Guoqiang bid a final farewell to Peng Chong.Peng, who had served as vice chairman of China's top legislature and the top political advisory body, died of illness in Beijing on Oct. 18 at an age of 96.Peng was also a member of the Political Bureau of the 11th Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC), a member of the Secretariat of the CPC Central Committee, vice chairman of the fifth National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, and vice chairman of the standing committees of the fifth, sixth and seventh National People's Congresses.He was described in an official statement as a "loyal Communist fighter," "proletarian revolutionist" and "outstanding leader of the CPC's political work and the construction of China's socialist legal system."

SHANGHAI, Oct. 16 (Xinhua) -- A total of 1.03 million people visited the Shanghai World Exposition on Saturday, a record number since the Expo opened. The total number also exceeded an earlier record.The Expo had received some 64.62 million visitors by the end of Saturday, the 169th day since the event began on May 1. The previous record was set during the 1970 Osaka World Expo in Japan, which about 64 million people attended over a six month period.Attendance may be increasing since this is the first weekend after the week-long National Day holiday and the second to last weekend before the final seven designated days from Oct. 25-31.Since early this morning, the Expo' s public transportation system has been under great pressure as visitors have been seen throughout the Expo site.Visitors needed to queue up for more than one hour before being admitted to most pavilions. Some popular pavilions, including the Oil Pavilion and Space Home Pavilion, stopped visitors from queuing up by 4 or 5 p.m. because of the large crowds.Many visitors could only walk around, take pictures outside of pavilions, or have picnics at rest area. Further, all parades were canceled due to the large number of visitors.Zhou Qian and Dai Shishi from Hangzhou described the long queues as "horrible". But Zhou said she had been prepared for the situation as they visited seven pavilions, including the Egyptian and Spanish pavilions.A visitor surnamed Zhang and her daughter, a high school student in Shanghai, entered the site at 11 a.m. but had only visited three pavilions by 6:30 p.m."And all of them are small ones. BEIJING, Sept. 17 (Xinhua) -- Typhoon Fanapi is likely to land on the east coast of Taiwan on Sunday, said China's National Marine Environmental Forecasting Center (NMEFC) in Beijing Friday.The center of the year' s 11th typhoon was about 700 km southeast from Hualien, in Taiwan, said a statement from the center.It was moving northwest towards Hualien and increasing in strength, the statement noted.The administration has issued a warning regarding huge waves which might strike off the Hualien coast, it said.On Sunday, the southern East China Sea might also produce waves of 4 to 6 meters high and waves in the Taiwan Strait might rise to 3 to 4 meters.Guangdong, Fujian and Zhejiang provinces along the mainland's southeast coast would also be affected by the typhoon, the statement said.The statement warned all fishing boats in the region to take necessary precautions.The fishing season began in the East China Sea in mid-September and a large number of vessels are in the area.Additionally, Typhoon Fanapi could continue moving west after landing on Taiwan and strike Fujian and Guangdong, the statement said.Also on Friday, the Ministry of Civil Affairs launched an early-warning for disaster relief responses aimed at the typhoon's possible damages to the southeastern coastal areas.The ministry and the National Committee for Disaster Reduction instructed local governments to carefully keep track of the typhoon's movement and the changes in weather, and strengthen prevention measures for geological disasters and flooding in urban areas.Local governments were also urged to evacuate residents in high-risk areas while providing for their basic living necessities.
