United Airlines is sending layoff warnings to 36,000 employees, nearly half its U.S. staff. It's the clearest signal yet of how deeply the COVID-19 pandemic is hurting the airline industry. United officials said Wednesday that they still hope to limit the number of layoffs by offering early retirement, but they have to send notices this month to comply with a law requiring that workers get 60 days' notice ahead of mass job cuts. The furloughs would include 11,000 flight attendants, 11,000 customer service and gate agents, 5,500 maintenance workers and 2,250 pilots. Uber has announced a new subscription service to help customers avoid price surging.Titled "Ride Pass", the new service is only available in five U.S. cities at the moment.According to the BBC, the service costs .99 a month in Los Angeles and .99 in Austin, Denver, Miami and Orlando. Two people are dead after a police chase ended in a crash in Cleveland Tuesday morning.A car being chased by Shaker Heights (Ohio) police crashed into a tree at East 151st and Harvard Avenue around 2:20 a.m., according to police.Cleveland police said they believed the car was being chased because it was stolen.This man was walking home and saw part of the chase. TUCSON, Arizona — Another U.S. Senate seat will soon be up for grabs in Arizona.Governor Doug Ducey announced Friday morning that Senator Jon Kyl — who Ducey appointed to the Senate after John McCain's death in August — will step down from his role at the end of the year.That leaves Ducey in the hot seat — he'll have to appoint another Senator to fill the seat until a special election can be conducted in 2020. By Arizona law, Ducey — a Republican — has to appoint someone of his same political party.Ducey hasn't offered any insight into who he would appoint, but speculation included several prominent Republican names, including McCain's widow Cindy McCain and former Senate candidate and Congresswoman Martha McSally. 742
Two people were found dead in a South Euclid, Ohio home early Saturday morning following a 12-hour standoff tied to the investigation of a Beachwood, Ohio doctor who was found shot to death on Thursday.Around 7:30 p.m Friday, SWAT converged on a second house belonging to Dr. Richard Warn in the 4300 block of Elmwood Road to serve a warrant with homicide detectives. Warn was found dead the previous day inside his Beachwood home on Brentwood Road.SWAT officers made entry into the residence using an armored vehicle and were met with gunfire. Authorities retreated and over the next 12 hours attempted to make contact with the people inside. On Saturday morning SWAT entered the house and found two white males dead inside, police said.The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation is processing the scene for evidence.Police said the two men were persons of interest in the doctor's death.
