He shared the date with one of his favorite comedians, along with a dream and a request for help."My initial response was 'We're going to make this happen,' " said Lisa Alvarado.Alvarado talked with some friends in the industry to see if they'd help make Schmid's dream of performing come true."I'm talking comics with Netflix specials, Comedy Central specials," Alvarado said.In one month, the group developed a 15-minute standup comedy routine for Schmid to deliver Friday night. Many of the professional comedians were in the audience as Schmid performed in his wheelchair with Alvarado holding his microphone.After the performance, Schmid's father made his way to the stage to give his son a hug."I never expected him to do that and show the world we're close," said Schmid.Schmid's ex-wife and his four children were also in the audience."No matter how crappy of a hand he's been dealt, he's taken it with a joke," said Schmid's son Joshua.Schmid is grateful he had a chance to laugh."I want my friends and family to have at least that memory when I'm gone," Schmid said. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A five-vehicle pileup at a College Area intersection left two young women severely injured and sent four others drivers to the hospital, police said Thursday.The crash was reported around 9:10 p.m. Wednesday at the intersection of 70th Street and El Cajon Boulevard, San Diego police Officer John Buttle said.A 63-year-old man driving a 2016 Mercedes E400 eastbound on El Cajon Boulevard suffered an unknown medical issue and slammed into the back of a 2015 Ford Fusion sitting in the northbound turn lane to 70th Street, Buttle said.The impact pushed both vehicles into the westbound lanes, where they were both struck by three vehicles -- a Nissan Rogue SUV, a BMW and a Honda Civic, the officer said. At that point, the Ford caught fire, leaving two 22-year-old women trapped inside before witnesses pulled them from the car.Both women suffered second- and third-degree burns over 70% of their bodies, along with uncontrolled internal bleeding, Buttle said. They were taken to a hospital for treatment of their injuries, which were considered life-threatening.The Mercedes driver was taken to a hospital for treatment of unknown injuries, Officer Tony Martinez said.The Nissan driver, a 20-year-old woman, the BMW driver, a 63-year-old man, and the Honda driver were taken to local hospitals for treatment of minor injuries, Buttle said.No details about the Honda driver were immediately available. 1427

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A 28-year-old man who appeared to suffer some type of medical emergency and passed out after fighting with deputies arresting him at a North County convenience store last week died at a hospital, authorities reported Wednesday.Marco Napoles Rosales of El Monte was pronounced brain-dead Tuesday, six days after his violent encounter with law enforcement personnel, according to sheriff's officials. A ruling on his cause of death remains on hold pending an autopsy.The events that led to Rosales' confrontation with law enforcement personnel began about 4:30 a.m. last Thursday, when a 911 caller reported that he had been acting strangely in a Circle K market on state Route 76 in Fallbrook, seemed to be "under the influence of drugs" and was refusing to leave the business, Lt. SALT LAKE CITY, Utah — The United States Attorney’s Office is asking anyone who might have gotten their immigration paperwork “lost” in the mail to please give them a call.Federal prosecutors have contacted 181 potential victims whose documents may have actually been intentionally destroyed by a former United States Postal Service employee in Salt Lake City.Special agents with the USPS identified the suspect as 77-year-old Diana Molyneux from West Jordan.Many of the victims were legal immigrants residing in Utah and Nevada who were waiting for their Permanent Resident Card, commonly referred to as a Green Card.“I pray for her. I really do,” said Eloisa Mendoza, the proprietor of Elko Hispanic Services. “I personally think she knew what was in those envelopes.”Mendoza told KSTU she worked with approximately 60 victims in Elko, Nevada. Whenever a client’s mail had a tracking number, Mendoza said it seemed like the documents always got stuck in Salt Lake City.“It’s really difficult for me to understand why (the suspect) would do something like that,” Mendoza said. “Issues. Personal issues… I do not know her, so I really cannot say if she’s racist or not. To me, I think her issue was just ‘aliens.’”According to Mendoza, some of the victims lost their jobs due to the inability to provide proof of legal residency in the United States. "We're not constantly doing refills, bringing them condiments the way that we used to,” she said. “Salt and pepper shakers are a thing of the past. I don't know that we'll ever see those again.” About two weeks ago, county restaurants got the green light to once again host guests. While Lake doesn't have to, she is keeping the dining room closed to the public for safety reasons. Instead, she opened eight of the 22 tables on her front patio, spaced out for social distancing. “It's nice to see people back there, but it's sad to think of the opportunities that my business is missing out on,” Lake said. Still, not every restaurant is hosting guests . Some are opting to stay take-out only for the time being. The ones that have opened up, however, are finding limited takers. New reservation data from Open Table shows seated dining in San Diego is down about 80% from this time a year ago. One reason: only about 45 percent of the restaurants in Open Table’s network are even taking reservations. “Just because we've had to open the economy doesn't mean that there is no coronavirus anymore, and I think that's where people are coming from when they don't want to be among the masses,” Lake said.
