SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The Department of Homeland Security is responding to the caravan of Central American immigrants prepared to enter the United States through the border with Mexico. At least 600 people from Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, and Nicaragua are traveling to Tijuana, according to freelance journalist Jorge Nieto. About 100 arrived last night. Eventually the group will enter the U.S. at the San Ysidro port of entry.Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen released a statement on the caravan.“DHS continues to monitor the remnants of the ‘caravan’ of individuals headed to our Southern border with the apparent intention of entering the United States illegally. A sovereign nation that cannot – or worse, chooses not – to defend its borders will soon cease to be a sovereign nation. The Trump Administration is committed to enforcing our immigration laws – whether persons are part of this ‘caravan’ or not.”DHS warned members of the caravan that they may be turned over for prosecution under illegal entry laws. Anyone seeking asylum may be detained while their claims are processed, DHS said.“Again, if you enter the United States illegally, let me be clear: you have broken the law. And we will enforce the law through prosecution of illegal border crossers,” Nielsen stated. The DHS statement encouraged those with asylum claims to seek protection in the first safe country they enter, naming Mexico as a possibility.“While we are committed to doing everything we can on the border to secure our nation, we need Congress to do their job as well.  I join the President in asking Congressional leadership to work with the Administration to pass legislation to close the legal loopholes that prevent us from securing our borders and protecting Americans. I stand ready to work with any member who in good faith seeks to support DHS’s mission and secure our country,” Nielsen wrote. 1914

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The man suspected of opening fire on U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents at the border Monday has been named.San Diego Police say 23-year-old Travis James Eckstein, a U.S. citizen, was shot and killed during a shootout with CBP officers Monday at the San Ysidro Port of Entry. Eckstein was driving from Mexico into the U.S. and refused to stop for officers. Officers say Eckstein tried to drive through an inspection area, before a vehicle blocked his exit.He then began to fire on officers before he exited his vehicle continued shooting. Officers returned fire and struck Eckstein.RELATED: Suspected gunman killed in shootout at San Ysidro Port of Entry identified as US citizen10News spoke exclusively with a man who witnessed and recorded the gun battle on his cell phone. He said he was driving back home to Chula Vista from Mexico on Monday evening. Moments after he cleared customs, he said he saw a white truck blaze past him. He immediately saw CBP agents throw out spike strips on the ground and the driver of the truck crash into another vehicle. Seconds after two separate shootouts, our viewer saw agents dragging Eckstein onto the sidewalk. Meanwhile, other officers were pointing their guns at the bullet-ridden truck, addressing the passengers. Two male Chinese nationals, ages 18 and 27, were found in the rear of Eckstein's truck and were interviewed and released to CBP officials.First responders attempted life-saving measures on Eckstein, but he did not survive his injuries.Seven CBP officers were involved in the shooting but, miraculously, none were injured.“The CBP officers risked their own lives to protect the public from this gunman,” Pete Flores, Director of Field Operations, said in a release. “Human smuggling is always dangerous. This unfortunate incident demonstrates the total disregard smuggling organizations have for what they consider to be cargo.”RELATED: Man killed in shootout with CBP officers at Port of EntryA motive for the shooting was still under investigation Wednesday.10News found a Facebook post written by Eckstein's mother, Donna Kniss. A portion of the post talks about her son's recent medical condition. “We are all All Shocked, Devastated & Heartbroken! Travis has struggled for many Years with depression and was recently diagnosed as bipolar. He also had many concussions, his Brain didn’t Think like a Normal Person.”Kniss concluded the post with sorrow.“We weren’t okay with the choices Travis had made. We refused to enable and fuel his bad behavior, but he is still my son, allow us to grieve.” The post has since been deleted from Facebook.Anyone with information on the shooting is urged to contact the SDPD Homicide Unit at 619-531-2293 or Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477. 2777

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The City of San Diego's Development Services division is still investigating the platform that collapsed at a Barrio Logan gym this weekend and injured 21 minors and a few adults. At least one minor is still in the hospital with a broken pelvis, we're told.A city spokesperson reported to 10 News on Tuesday that no further details would be released until the investigation is complete. On Monday, the spokesperson said there were definite code violations and missing permits at Vault PK parkour gym, where the incident happened. Whether the gym will face any penalties is still unknown. The gym has only been open for a few months. On a Facebook post, it appears much of the construction of the facility was done by the owner's immediate family.  On Monday, San Diego Police Department's media relations division confirmed that the incident is a civil matter and the department will not be recommending any criminal charges, including criminal negligence.  There is another Vault PK parkour gym in Torrance. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The Del Mar Fairgrounds get transformed into a small, mobile city during the traveling performance of Cirque du Soleil as the focus shifts to feeding hundreds of artists, technicians and staff. Each Cirque du Soleil audience is transported to another world watching art unfold on the stage, but behind the scenes is another form of art. “Culinary is one of those few fields left in the world where you can be artistic, can be a form of expression every day.” Chef Scott Veneklase is one of Volta’s four chefs, creating eclectic menus featuring food from all corners of the world. “We try to do a bit of everything, German food, Japanese food, today Italian.” Because the performers come from 25 different countries, their meal is often the closest connection they’ll have to their home.
