SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego Gulls coach Dallas Eakins was Monday named the coach of its NHL parent team, the Anaheim Ducks.Eakins coached the Gulls throughout their four seasons in the American Hockey League, guiding them to a 154-95-23 record and three Calder Cup playoff berths. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego City Council rejected an emergency ordinance Tuesday that would have banned motorized scooters on boardwalks in Mission Beach, Pacific Beach, Mission Bay and La Jolla.  State law already bans motorized scooters from sidewalks but doesn't mention boardwalks.   The vehicles have become increasingly common in San Diego since they were introduced in February by scooter-sharing companies Bird and LimeBike. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - SANDAG and Caltrans opened a southbound Interstate 5 auxiliary lane in the University City area.The new exit-only lane allows motorists to enter the freeway from Genesee Avenue and continue directly to the La Jolla Village Drive off-ramp without having to merge with freeway traffic.The approximately half-mile auxiliary lane is intended to improve traffic flow, reduce travel delays and increase overall safety in the area. Prior to its completion, the heavily trafficked southbound I-5 off-ramp to La Jolla Village Drive often caused congestion on the freeway, posing a safety risk to motorists.Construction for the I-5/Genesee Avenue Auxiliary Lane project began in July 2019 and required careful work alongside freeway traffic. The million project was made possible by the Road Repair and Accountability Act of 2017, which increased the state gas tax to fund state transportation projects.The auxiliary lane was constructed concurrently with the Mid-Coast Trolley project, which will extend Blue Line Trolley service from Downtown San Diego north to the University community when it opens for service in late 2021.The auxiliary lane runs beneath the Voigt Drive Trolley bridge, one of two locations where the future trolley will travel over I-5. 1278

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego County Registrar of Voters has received more than 560,000 ballots, it was announced Wednesday, more than three times the amount received at this point before the 2016 election.With less than two weeks remaining before the Nov. 3 election, the ballots are in the process of being put through a sorting machine that captures images of voters' signatures for comparison to ones the registrar has on file.Mail-in ballots were sent to all 1.9 million registered voters in the county on Oct. 5, even to those who had not requested one. Nearly a quarter of those have already been processed."Within minutes after the polls close at 8 p.m. on election night, the results for those early returns that were mailed in or deposited at drop- off locations before election day are counted," the registrar's office tweeted.For those who prefer to vote in person, the Registrar of Voters office in Kearny Mesa is open for early voting from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays. Voters also have the option to drop off their ballot at one of 126 drop-off locations around the county -- including dozens of libraries, YMCAs, county offices and The Old Globe Theater in Balboa Park.Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, in-person San Diego-area polling places will be open for four days instead of one, Registrar Michael Vu said.Vu has announced that his office is working with county public health services to ensure the health and safety of election workers and voters. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency announced Tuesday that it will make its inclement weather shelter program available to homeless residents in the county's unincorporated areas. The agency's Housing and Community Development Services division activates the shelter when rain is expected for at least two days, reaches two inches in a 24-hour period or when a storm includes a threat of flash flooding. County officials monitor seven unincorporated zones to determine when to activate the shelter program. Homeless residents can contact 211 San Diego between noon and 7 p.m. to be connected to a shelter provider. In some cases, residents are eligible to receive assistance with transportation to an inclement weather shelter.
