BEIJING, Dec. 4 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang has urged the country to offer better services for the disabled.Li made the remarks Friday while visiting the Care and Rehabilitation Expo, a three-day international exhibition on equipment to assist disabled and aged people.Friday marked the International Day for Persons with Disabilities. China's disabled population exceeds 83 million. Li called for more efforts to care for the disabled in a bid to improve their quality of life.Further, the vice premier said the country would improve laws and regulations regarding the disabled and increase support of policies and fund input to serve the disabled population in better ways.Better services for disabled people would include improving the quality of public services, making more areas handicapped accessible, and assisting the needy and safeguarding their rights and interests in a bid to solving difficulties in their living, studying, and medical requirements, Li said.The expo, organized by the China Disabled Persons' Federation and the General Office of the National Aging Committee, brought together more than 200 manufacturers from 17 countries and regions, according to statistics released by the organizing committee.

Further, China will ramp up its efforts in sewage treatment and building clean energy facilities, and concentrate on solving prominent environmental problems that affects people's lives, Li said.He also urged protecting the nation' s major ecological conservation areas and facilitating biological diversity.Facing the climate change challenges, the international community should actively work together on the basis of the U.N. OSLO, Dec. 10 (Xinhua) -- More than 200 overseas Chinese in Norway demonstrated here on Friday to protest against the Nobel Committee's decision to confer this year's Nobel Peace Prize to Liu Xiaobo, a convicted Chinese criminal.The organizers said the overseas Chinese, who joined the demonstration near Oslo city hall despite cold weather, were from 13 Chinese communities.The protestors held banners reading "Liu Xiaobo Is A Criminal!""No Meddling in China's Internal Affairs!" "Peace Prize = Political Tool!" "Opposition to Nobel Peace Prize to Liu Xiaobo" and "Oppose The Wrong Decision By The Norwegian Nobel Committee", chanting slogans such as "China has contributed to world peace!"A Norwegian man also took part in the protest, holding a banner reading "Liu Xiaobo did nothing to peace!"Ma Lie, president of Norway Association for Promoting Peaceful Reunification of China, said the Nobel Committee made a wrong decision to confer the prize to Liu, noting it should not intervene in China's domestic affairs and hoping the committee can really understand the notion of world peace.On Nov. 29, representatives of overseas Chinese in Norway handed an open letter to Geir Lundestad, secretary of the Norwegian Nobel Committee, strongly protesting the awarding of this year's Nobel Peace Prize to Liu.Liu was sentenced to 11 years in prison for engaging in activities aimed at overthrowing the government.

  

BEIJING, Nov. 30 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao on Tuesday urged Israel and Palestine to stay on the path of peace talks and take constructive moves to advance their stalled peace talks.Wen made the appeal in a message to the Conference in Commemoration of the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People, which was held Monday at the United Nations headquarters in New York.Offering warm congratulations for the event on behalf of the Chinese government, Wen stressed that the Palestinian issue is at the core of the Middle East issue.The Chinese government has all along firmly supported the Palestinian people's just cause of restoring their legitimate national rights, and the efforts to continuously push the Middle East peace process forward, Wen said.The talks between Israel and Palestine have now reached a pivotal stage, he said, voicing the hope that both sides will stay on the track,take positive and constructive efforts, avoid any disturbance of the talks, cooperate with international mediation efforts, and constantly promote the negotiation process.He expressed the hope that on the basis of related UN resolutions and the "land-for-peace" principle, an independent Palestinian State with full sovereignty will be established and the peaceful coexistence of Israel and the Palestinian State will be achieved.An early settlement of the Palestinian issue is the expectation shared by all Middle East countries and peoples and the international community, Wen said.As a permanent member of the UN Security Council, China will as always support the United Nations in playing a vital role on the Middle East issue, he said.He added that China, along with the international community, will continue to make unremitting efforts to seek a just solution to the Palestinian issue and promote peace, stability and development in the Middle East.The UN General Assembly adopted a resolution in 1977 designating Nov. 29 as the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People. On that day in 1947, the assembly passed a resolution on the partition of Palestine.Each year, the assembly's Committee on the Exercise of Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People holds a special meeting in observance of the Day of Solidarity.
