James "Whitey" Bulger, the notorious and much-feared former Boston mob boss, was killed Tuesday morning at the United States Penitentiary Hazelton in Bruceton Mills, West Virginia.Bulger, 89, who had eluded federal authorities for more than 16 years before his arrest in June 2011, was serving the rest of his life in prison for a litany of crimes, including his role in 11 murders. He was sentenced in November 2013 to two life terms plus five years for his role as architect of a criminal enterprise that, in the words of a federal judge, committed "unfathomable" acts that terrorized a city. 601

Joe Biden's two surviving children Hunter and Ashley Biden introduced their father moments before he accepted the Democratic nomination for president on Thursday. Also joining Hunter and Ashley was Beau Biden, whose words from a past convention were added to the introduction. Beau Biden died in 2015 after a battle with brain cancer."We want to tell you what kind of president our dad will be. He will be tough and honest, caring and principled. He'll listen, be there when you need him. He'll tell you the truth even when you don't want to hear it. He'll never let you down,” Hunter and Ashley Biden said, trading lines.Hunter Biden became a household name last year when word came that President Donald Trump called on Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to investigate Hunter Biden’s role with Burisma, an oil firm owned by a Ukrainian. Hunter Biden held a job with the company as his father served his second term as vice president. As vice president, Joe Biden was among western leaders who called for the exodus of Ukrainian prosecutor Viktor Shokin. Trump and the White House tried to claim that Biden's push to ouster the prosecutor was influenced by his son's role with Burisma, but both Republicans and Democrats on Capitol Hill in addition to other western nations joined in calling for the ouster of Shokin. The controversy with Hunter Biden was a campaign issue early on during the primaries."My son did nothing wrong," Joe Biden said during an October debate. "I did nothing wrong. I carried out the policy of the United States government in rooting out corruption in Ukraine. And that's what we should be focusing on." 1642

KINGS MILLS, Ohio - Patrick Farrell has a very full heart, but he was running on empty Sunday afternoon. The Kings Mills man was straining to finish a 100-mile run to raise money for orphans on the other side of the globe.Farrell took only short breaks for fuel and to change shoes. His first pair had sheet metal screws on the bottom."Because there was snow on the ground (Saturday),” he explained after his grueling 30-hour endeavor. You could say Farrell had his heart in it all the way.  “I decided to blend my passion for running and helping orphans,” he said.Farrell said he did it for six girls at an orphanage in Nepal who are not available for U.S. adoption.“There's a non-profit organization called Love Does and they're always looking for people to do fundraisers to provide financial support for the orphanage,” Farrell said. It’s a cause that close to Farrell's heart because he and his wife Susan adopted their four youngest kids from China. The Farrells said they got the idea after their only biological child, Karrie, noticed families who had adopted Chinese children. Karrie did her own research and started asking her parents to adopt, too.The Farrells’ kids know the importance of helping orphans, so they encouraged their dad on his run through their neighborhood.“I'm just so glad I'm not doing it,” said Caitlin, the Farrells’ first adopted child.Farrell said he went through three pairs of shoes running on trails and concrete. Other took turns running with him.Susan kept her husband fed and hydrated as best she could, but she could see him slipping as the miles and hours took their toll.“He really did great for probably the first 70 miles, but then as evening set in and the cold and the weariness, he hit a wall bigger than I've ever seen before,” Susan said.“I experienced sleep deprivation at a number of points,” Patrick said.  “There's times when you just want to go inside and put your head down on a pillow and go to sleep.”But the people running with him and encouraging pulled him through, Susan said.“I really feel like the friends that came and helped him all through the night were a big key. I don't know if he could've done it without them,” she said. This was the second time Farrell has run 100 miles to raise money for the orphanage. He raised over ,400 the last time, and his goal this time was ,000.Every U.S. dollar goes very far there because of the exchange rate:   is worth 102 rupees in Nepal. As of Sunday, Farrell was about halfway toward his goal. Just about anything with a wireless connection could be a target for hackers to attack, including personal computers, tablets and even baby monitors. But what about medical devices? The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is monitoring that, too.Cardiologist Cynthia Tracy, with George Washington University Medical Center, implants pacemakers into people’s bodies almost daily.“In a typical situation, there might be two electrodes that pass through these veins and into the heart,” Tracy explains of the device. The device, which is about the size of silver dollar, controls a patient's heart beat and sends data to doctors by using the internet."They have a Bluetooth connection somehow that allows the device to communicate with something external," Dr. Tracy says. That wireless connection is where the concern comes in.“There's no such thing as a medical device without vulnerabilities,” says Suzanne Scwarts, who leads medical device cyber security for the FDA.Shwarts says after a series of security problems discovered in various medical devices, cyber security is front and center.“We want patients to definitely be able to understand what are current risks today,” Shwarts says.Dr. Tracy explains while security shortcomings may be there, an actual hack to something like a pacemaker would be a bit difficult.“I couldn't from here reprogram someone that's out there in the lobby, Dr. Tracy says."They would have to be fairly close in order for me to do anything to their device."Though there have been no direct hacks to patients to date, the threat is there, which is why the FDA is ramping up its efforts to make sure the hacking of medical devices doesn't become reality. 1689

Kroger is making another big push into online groceries, this time by opening a digital business in China.America's largest grocery chain said Tuesday that it will start selling its Simple Truth-brand products on Alibaba's Tmall Global site.By partnering with Alibaba, Kroger can battle its biggest rivals on two fronts: It will expand its fledgling online business and will venture abroad for the first time. Tmall is internet giant Alibaba's e-commerce platform for foreign brands."E-commerce enables Kroger to quickly scale to reach new customers and markets where we don't operate physical stores, starting with China," Yael Cosset, Kroger's chief digital officer, said in a statement.Simple Truth is Kroger's line of natural and organic goods. The brand reached billion in sales earlier this year, the company said. It's the latest attempt by Kroger to compete with Amazon and Walmart as online shopping for groceries becomes increasingly popular. The company launched "Kroger Ship," a direct home delivery service, in four US cities earlier this month. And in May, Kroger signed an exclusive deal with UK online supermarket Ocado to use its technology in the United States.Partnering with Alibaba also gives Kroger a gateway into China's huge consumer market.More and more Western companies have been using this playbook. Starbucks recently announced that it is joining forces with Alibaba to launch coffee delivery services in September.Kroger's competitors also want to increase their presence in the region.Walmart and Alibaba competitor JD.com have reportedly decided to invest 0 million in Dada-JD Daojia, a Chinese online grocery delivery company. Walmart first took a position in JD.com in 2016.That partnership could get some new muscle from Silicon Valley. Google bought a 0 million stake in JD.com in June. The two tech firms plan to join forces to sell goods online across Southeast Asia, the United States and Europe. Google still can't offer its main services in China. 2067
