SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A sailboat damaged the USS Midway Sunday.The mast of the sailboat collided with a safety net attachment on the front port-side ‘horn’ of the ship. The crash happened shortly after 2 p.m. according to Harbor Police.The mast of the sailboat snapped off. There was minor damage to the safety nets of the Midway.“I thought something fell off the flight line, I didn't think a boat would crash into the Midway,” said Craig Wiener, who was touring the Midway at the time of the crash. “We were looking out the little port windows, and you see the mast falling off into the water."Harbor patrol says no charges are expected and attributed the crash to inexperience on the part of the person steering the sailboat.  Eight people were onboard the sailboat, and none of them were hurt.“He didn't realize how close he was and how tall his mast was and it was too late and the wind pulled him in,” Wiener said. 945

SAN FRANCISCO — Verizon is joining an escalating movement to siphon advertising away from Facebook in an effort to pressure the company into doing more to prevent racist and violent information from being shared on its social networking service.The decision announced Thursday by one of the world's biggest telecommunications companies is part of a boycott organized by civil rights and other advocacy groups under the rallying cry of "#StopHateforProfit."The NAACP and the ADL are among the organizations behind the movement.The protest was spurred by last month's killing of George Floyd by Minneapolis police.Facebook says it is in talks with the boycott organizers in an effort to become a "force for good."Verizon is by far the largest company to join the movement. SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) - The gradual reopening of San Diego beaches continues the week of June 8. Parking lots are next on the list to reopen.Starting Monday, June 8, park and water use are open at East and West Mission Bay Parks with no restrictions. Mission Bay parking lots are open. Fiesta Island is open to pedestrians, dogs and cyclists as of June 8 but will not open for cars until July 6.Starting Tuesday, June 9, all San Diego piers and boardwalks are open. Plus, San Diego beach parking lots are open with no restrictions.Friday, June 12, Balboa Park Central Mesa opens, along with Balboa Park parking lots.While beaches are officially open for both active and passive activities, social distancing should still be practiced, meaning people should only sit near people who they live with. Sporting activities like football and volleyball are not allowed on beaches yet.There are nine permanent lifeguard stations in the San Diego Area, including Ocean Beach, South Mission Beach, Mission Beach, North Pacific Beach, Pacific Beach, Children's Pool, La Jolla Cove, La Jolla Shores and Black's Beach. 1117

San Diego State University's planned Mission Valley campus will generate more than 45,000 daily vehicle trips once its built out, according to a new draft environmental impact report.In November, San Diego voters approved a plan for SDSU to turn the SDCCU Stadium site into a Mission Valley campus. It will allow the university to grow from its current enrollment of 36,000 to more than 50,000. "It's great, it's allowing more students to come in and get their education started," said Tyler Ollison, who just transferred to SDSU. The university is planning more than just a campus in Mission Valley. It also is proposing a 35,000 seat stadium, 4,600 residential units, 400 hotel rooms, and 95,000 square-feet of retail, restaurants, and a grocery story. Plus, the university plans to build 1.4 million square feet of campus office and lab space, and 100 thousand square feet of medical office space.Its new draft environmental impact report says the project will ultimately generate 45,174 new daily trips to and from the campus, in already bustling Mission Valley. "Our project proposes a number of signal re-timings, and expansions of turn lanes, and a number of entrances and exits throughout the site," said Gina Jacobs, SDSU's vice president for the development. Jacobs added the project calls for a new road from Fenton Parkway into the campus. The draft EIR also studies alternate forms of transportation, including how the on-site trolley stop can figure in. The project completion is expected in 2037. Meanwhile, the new stadium is expected to open in 2022. SDSU is now taking feedback on its draft EIR, which can be viewed here. SAN DIEGO, California — An 18-year-old San Diego woman died and her 16-year-old cousin were injured in a crash on Interstate 10 on the way to the Coachella Music Festival in Indio, a friend told KGTV television station in San Diego.Federico Pedrazzini confirmed Ginevra Gallone-Latte died in the crash in Banning early Thursday morning. Her cousin Manuela was injured.The California Highway Patrol said 21-year-old Cesar Hernandezozuna was speeding when his BMW drifted onto the dirt shoulder. The driver tried to get back onto the freeway but went over an embankment and hit two trees, officers said.The crash split the car in two. Gallone-Latte was thrown and died at the scene, according to the CHP.Her cousin was taken to the hospital with serious injuries. Hernandezozuna suffered a facial injury, according to the CHP.Both teens had previously attended La Jolla High School.Officers ruled out alcohol and drugs as contributing factors in the crash but had not determined the cause, the CHP said. 1019
