SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A local wildlife researcher is being remembered after he died Thursday at a remote canyon in San Pasqual Valley.David Bittner, 75, of Julian, died what he loved doing. He was replacing batteries on wildlife cameras in the Brady Canyon area, when he fell at least 50 feet. The county's Medical Examiner says Bittner called to a friend there with him, but was pronounced dead at the scene shortly later after crews pulled him to safety.Bittner co-founded the Wildlife Research Institute with his wife and devoted his life to the cause, according to Molly Jager-Begent."He would tag eagles all over the world and follow their paths to figure out what was really happening in the world of wildlife," Begent said.RELATED: Man dies after falling 50 feet off Escondido cliffBegent said she and her husband donated a portion of their ranch off Highland Valley Road in Ramona to the Wildlife Research Institute. Lined inside the ranch are wildlife photos captured by Bittner, another passion of his."He was just really dedicated. He had a passion," Begent says. For decades, Bittner led a free "hawk watch" on Saturdays during the first two months of the year, where biologists would teach the community about birds and their relationship to raptors.Begent said the wildlife expert helped educate thousands on the importance of wildlife preservation, even purchasing 3,000 acres and gifting it to the county as a wildlife preserve, according to Begent."His life was dedicated fully to his love of wildlife and wild places, helping educate thousands on the balance of preservation and healthy appreciation of wildlife while protecting their habitat first and foremost," said Katie Quint, who worked closely with Bittner.Thursday, Bittner was replacing batteries near the location of a threatened Golden Eagle's nest, according to Quint. "Dave has been advocating for San Diego County’s Golden Eagle population with local agencies by ensuring the long-term documentation of their nesting ecology over the past 31 years," said Quint.Saturday, a special tribute is planned for Bittner from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Begent Ranch in Ramona, the area where he connected so many to his love of wildlife. 2210

San Diego (KGTV) - A San Diego man claims San Diego County Sheriff deputies roughed him up in jail and the incident was caught on camera.He’s calling the deputies' actions an abuse of power.“I’m actually pissed,” said Joshua Strode. “I’m actually very angry.”San Diego State University police arrested Strode back in June for being drunk in public, something he denies.Strode was taken to San Diego Central Jail. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A pedestrian was struck and killed by a vehicle while on Interstate 5 late Sunday.The pedestrian was on southbound I-5, just north of Cesar E Chavez Parkway, just before 11 p.m. when a vehicle struck and killed the person, according to the California Highway Patrol.Several vehicles hit the person after the initial crash, CHP added.CHP said it's unclear why the person was on the freeway and whether drugs or alcohol were a factor in the collision.I-5 was closed between Cesar Chavez Parkway and Logan Avenue while CHP investigators responded. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A man was medevaced from a Carnival cruise ship Monday after a reported stroke. According to the Coast Guard, the rescue happened around 6:30 p.m. Monday roughly 45 miles northwest of San Diego. A MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter was launched to assist. Once on the scene, the Jayhawk crew lowered a rescue swimmer to the cruise ship to assess the 58-year-old man. The crew took the man to Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla just after 9:20 p.m., according to the Coast Guard. The man is said to be in stable condition. 540

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A San Diego company has a solution for tired employees or students -- they've created "napping pods" which can be rented by the hour."It's a place to go, escape from a hectic environment and recharge," said Hohm CEO Nikolas Woods.The pods are small, just 43.5 square feet each. They include a fully-furnished twin-size bed, mirror, charging stations, fan, lights and light and noise dampening curtains."Every piece was put together to create the most comfort," said Woods.Right now, Woods has just three pods in service, all on the University of Arizona campus. He hopes to expand to more college campuses around the country.He's also trying to get large corporations to buy some for their employees, and he's trying to get some places in major airports as well."A lot of employees could use a break," Woods said. "Wouldn't it be better to go somewhere and recharge, get your productivity level up?"People can find and book the pods through the Hohm website. It costs around per hour, with a 30 minute minimum and 4 hour max.Woods hopes to launch an app this spring to make booking even easier.He said each installation will have an attendant nearby to help people check in, clean the pods and enforce a strict one-person-per-pod rule. 1266
