(KGTV) - In Jamul, community members are banding together to help a family-owned farm decimated by the Valley Fire.Cheryl Skidmore, the owner of Hidden Haven Ranch, was on the phone with workers on site."Very, very smoky fire. Hit the ridge and then came down very fast," said Skidmore.Some animals were evacuated, but the damage was heavy at the 16-year-old farm known for sustainable farming.All 125 chickens were killed. Most of the crops were destroyed: half of the orchards, from apples to apricots, and all of the industrial hemp fields. The flames also burned a trailer and much of the farm equipment."Everything is just devastated. We have to start over," said Skidmore.Skidmore says she tried to get wildfire insurance but was denied, partly because she’s in a fire-prone area. The total loss was about 0,000. Shutting down the farm became very possible."It's overwhelming," said Skidmore.The word 'overwhelming' could also be used to describe the outpouring of support."The community has been donating hens. Hopefully, we will be doing egg production next month," said Skidmore.The farm asked for help and the community responded with dozens of volunteers at three cleanup efforts, including one on this day. Volunteers have done everything, from raking ash and trimming trees, to moving dirt and cleaning horse stalls. Jordyn Brewer is one of those volunteers."When I saw the pictures of the devastation, it made me upset. If I were in that situation, I would want people to help me," said Skidmore.Skidmore says that help will mean the difference between shutting down and keeping the farm going."No way I could have done this myself ... Just to see people so willing to help others, just makes me feel so good," said Skidmore.A lot of cleanup remains at the 52-acre farm. (KGTV) - A life’s work of rescuing horses burned to the ground in a matter of moments due to the Valley Fire burning east of San Diego.Patty Hyslop has overseen her horse rescue, Hyslop Horse Haven, for more than 20 years. She’s had Multiple Sclerosis for just about the same amount of time. The horses she saves have kept her moving through the pain.“If it weren’t for all the rest of the horses I don’t think she would still be here today,” said Shylynn Wellman, who has grown up at the ranch and now lives on the property.When Patty saw flames quickly approaching the ranch Saturday, she tried to get as many of her 24 horses out, but wasn’t able to save all of them.“The officers were like ‘you’re going to die if you don’t leave’ and I said I don’t care, I’m going to stay with my horses,” she said.Ultimately, she was the last one to leave the property and tried to save all of the horses, but had to leave a few behind.“I was so scared I was going to come home to burned and dead horses,” she said.Miraculously, when she returned, the horses she’d left had survived. Most of her ranch had not.In total, eight tack sheds filled with hundreds of thousands of dollars in horse supplies burned. The golf cart she uses to get around the large property, a huge help because of her MS, was a pile of melted metal. A majority of her property was blacked with ash as well. Despite the destruction, she still feels blessed.“I think it was a lot of luck. I think the horses, between that and God blessing us with horse angels, yeah,” she said.Right now, her horses are being housed at The Lucky Seven Ranch, and she’s hoping for some donations of horse supplies or sheds to get back on her feet. Patty said her goal is to rebuild and continue inspiring people to save horses.“These kids come to me and say I want to grow up to be like you, I want to know as much as you do, I want to help horses, too. JULIAN, Calif. (KGTV) - Caltrans will shut down all lanes of State Route 78 in Julian Friday night following a rock and mudslide. The freeway closure, which affects all lanes between Wynola Road and Great Southern Overland Stage Route (S2), may continue into the weekend. The area experienced a slide late Thursday that sent large rocks and debris into lanes. Crews limited traffic to one direction and determined rock scaling was needed to remove any more hazards. Residents will be allowed access through closures when conditions are safe, Caltrans said. (KGTV) - The Valley Fire claimed the home of a 78-year-old Jamul woman Saturday, along with many of her beloved animals.Cellphone video shot by Pat Menzies shows a thick wall of smoke over a ridge, as he drove his mother Eileen from her home, and away from the fast-moving flames of the Valley Fire on Saturday. Around 2 pm, Eileen says she had only minutes to pack a few things, grab her three dogs and get out of her home on Prairie Drive."We were afraid it was going to come fast, especially since there were no planes, helicopters and fire engines there," said Eileen.Eileen says brushfires have gotten within a half-mile of her home in the past, but this felt different."i just had a gut feeling this one was going to take me out," said Eileen.The fear turned into reality, as Eileen and her daughter discovered when they got back on the property the next day. Eileen's trailer home of 17 years was burned to the ground. All her family heirlooms and almost all her possessions were gone."I felt numb because there was nothing I could do. It's going to be tough to get back online," said Eileen.On the day she learned what happened to her home, the toughest part was her search for her animals, in various pens and cages. Her goat, duck, turkey and three of 12 peacocks, were all found dead."It was sad because they were trapped. The turkey, duck and goats were my babies, and they're not with me anymore," said Eileen.That sadness hanging over Eileen as she begins her road to recovery.
