DENVER, Colorado — Dr. Denise Mowder has some theories as to why a man who appeared to be a doting father and husband could do what Chris Watts is accused of doing.The associate professor of Criminology and Criminal Justice at MSU Denver and former prosecutor has worked with thousands of victims of family violence.She said case studies of fathers killing their children show the motive is most often rage, but there are other reasons."Most were done — 60 percent were done — by rage, the other 10 percent they don't know the cause, and the other 30 percent were spousal revenge. Oftentimes, it goes in a pattern," said Mowder, who said in this case, there could be another reason for the murders."I think he had a vision of another life with this other woman — carefree, no responsibilities," she said. "Two children and another on the way, that's a big responsibility."The fact that Chris Watts went in front of a KMGH?television camera to plead for his family's lives after he knew they were dead indicates, to Mowder, that he planned to blame an intruder, play victim and eventually start a new life."This whole facade he put on right after they started looking for them -- that was very odd, and it makes me wonder if he wasn't trying to find an out to be with the girlfriend," said Mowder. "Somebody else did it. I'm the poor grieving father."But the investigation quickly centered on him, as court records show he was having an affair with a co-worker."I think he thought he would just keep it up and it'd be a who-done-it," said Mowder. "Because where he put them, he had to think it through that no one would ever find them."He eventually told police a new story, and Mowder said it is no surprise based on her experience with perpetrators of domestic violence that he is blaming his wife."When he said she was the one strangling the children, I knew right then he was the one who strangled the children because he can give all the details of what he said she did because he was doing it himself," she said. "It's going to be hard on the family to hear the lies. And there's some secrets there, I'm afraid. It's going to be hard for the jury. It's going to be hard for the public to really understand because there is no understanding it," Mowder said.  2366

DENVER — "Game of Thrones" fans who wanted to own something like the near-mythical "Dire Wolves" on the series are now abandoning Huskies in record numbers."People have actually asked me if we have any Dire Wolves. That doesn't exist." said Maren Gibson with the Arctic Breeds Rescue, which rescues Huskies, Malamutes and other northern breeds in Utah and Colorado. "They have no real knowledge of the breed."Now, many of those dogs are being found on the street or abandoned in shelters."We've said amongst ourselves, 'What is going on with all these lost Huskies?'" said Stephanie Weber, who helps run the Facebook group Lost and Found Dogs of Colorado. Weber said they have recently seen a surge in found Huskies that no one is looking for."So, it seems sort of like maybe they are not just getting loose," said Weber. "Maybe someone is turning them loose, getting rid of them." At the Dumb Friends League Shelter in Aurora, there has also been a significant increase in the number of Huskies and Malamutes. The shelter has seen a 25 percent increase in the last fiscal year, compared to only a 2.5 percent increase the year before.Some are strays, but almost half of them have been surrendered by their owners."The reasons people are giving when they are surrendering the dogs are time and space, which means they don't have enough time for the dog, they don't have enough space for the dog," said Maia Brusseau, a spokeswoman with the Dumb Friends League. "If you want to adopt this type of dog, you need to make sure it's right for your lifestyle."The high-energy breed can be a challenge for many owners."Northern breeds are difficult," said Weber, who is fostering a Husky mix. "They're stubborn. They're runners. They're escape artists, They're chewers. They're very vocal. They have high energy and need a lot of exercise. They're great dogs if you're willing to make your life fit around them."Weber said too many people choose pets as an extension of the favorite show or movie and not based on what is the best fit for their family."When '101 Dalmatians' came out, everyone wanted a Dalmatian. It happens with every trend like that. but 15 years is a long time to live with not the right dog," said Weber.She recommends volunteering at a wolf rescue if you want to see something like a Dire Wolf or fostering the breed before you decide to adopt. 2427

DETROIT — At Martin Luther King Jr. High School in Detroit, voters arrived shortly after polls opened ready to vote.However, they were shocked to find out that the precinct wasn't prepared – they had no voting machines.Some voters were turned away while others were unable to vote for an hour and a half. DENVER — Dozens of states filed an anti-trust lawsuit against Google on Thursday, alleging that the search giant has an illegal monopoly over the online search market that hurts consumers and advertisers.This lawsuit was announced just one day after Texas and nine other states filed their lawsuit against Google alleging anticompetitive practices in the advertising technology industry.The Thursday lawsuit was announced by Colorado Attorney General Phil Weiser and was filed in federal court in Washington, D.C. by states represented by bipartisan attorneys general.The lawsuit was joined by the attorneys general of 35 states as well as the District of Columbia, Guam and Puerto Rico.The latest suit mirrors an anti-trust case brought by the Justice Department and 11 states earlier this fall that claimed Google uses anticompetitive agreements to get dominant position for Google Search on smartphones, according to CNN.The latest case goes further, also alleging Google moved to block or move down search results from certain other engines.The case is the third antitrust salvo to slam Google during the past two months as the Department of Justice and attorneys general from across the U.S. weigh in with their different variations on how they believe the company is abusing its immense power. 1307
