DAVOS, Switzerland, Jan. 27 (Xinhua) -- A policy of more trade and greater openness to the rest of the world has brought significant benefits to China and greater market opportunities to its trading partners, the head of the World Trade Organization says."I don't think there is any question that China joining the WTO has been a very good thing for China and for the WTO and its members," WTO Director General Pascal Lamy said in an interview with Xinhua. The WTO chief was expected to join the forum "China's Impact on Global Trade and Growth" on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum annual meeting held in this Swiss alpine town."In joining the WTO, China successfully underpinned a policy of what had been 20 years of progressive openness," Lamy said.Adherence to economic reforms through international commitments ensured that China would stay on the path of openness, he noted, adding that the policy has helped the country economically, politically and socially.Lamy stressed that China has done a "remarkable job" in reducing poverty, which is an important task for the country, along with registering double-digit growth, thus becoming the world's largest manufacturer and the second largest economy.Apart from enhanced market access with its trading partners and more equal treatment in global trade, WTO membership also has allowed China to gain access to the organization's dispute settlement system, Lamy said.According to a WTO report issued in December, as the world's biggest exporter, China ranks first in receiving anti-dumping (AD) investigations, with 23 new AD initiations directed at its exports in the first half of 2010.In recent rulings arbitrated by the WTO Dispute Settlement Body (DSB), China has won a poultry dispute against the United States, and a steel fastener case against the European Union.Being a WTO member, "China would have a seat at the table as negotiations commenced on the trade rules for the 21st century," Lamy said, referring to the decade-long Doha round of global trade negotiations aimed at building the next generation trading system.Even more importantly, for China, participation in the global system of rules and discipline greatly boosted investors' confidence and helped facilitate foreign direct investment in China, he said.On the other side of the coin, China's integration into the world trading system has given enormous driving force to the global economy and market opportunity to its trade partners.

BEIJING, Feb. 2 (Xinhua) -- From dumplings in the north and rice cakes in the south, people across China Wednesday overloaded their tables with holiday foods, cheering for the Spring Festival family reunion and praying for a better life in the coming Year of Rabbit. In a remote village in Guizhou Province, villagers were sharing millet cakes and preserved pork as sunshine dispelled cold and sleet, which have plagued China's southwest for a month."This year's Spring Festival is especially cheerful, since our dream of a new home has come true," said villager Zhang Jiuyun.Zhang's home was severely damaged in the snow and sleet disaster, but with the help of local villagers and funds from the government, Zhang built a larger house without spending much money. The Spring Festival is also an important occasion for migrant workers to enjoy family reunions after toiling for higher incomes in wealthy coastal provinces for a year."I've brought back red wine and cookies imported from Italy as gifts for my parents," said Ding Zhenghe, a Shenzhen-based factory owner who has worked his way up from a migrant worker. But Ding said, after years in the modern city, he still yearns for the the food cooked by his mother in the rural home. The Spring Festival, which falls on Thursday, also marks the start of the Year of the Rabbit. It is a time for family dinners, gift giving and fireworks.Nangkun Tashi, a villager in the earthquake-hit Yushu, northwest China's Qinghai Province, celebrated the first Lunar New Year after the disaster with traditional Tibetan food, such as mutton and butter tea.A 7.1-magnitude earthquake jolted Yushu in April 2010, killing about 2,200 people and leaving Tashi's village in ruins.Tashi's family narrowly survived the quake, and have recently moved into a new home, which was provided by the local government two months before. In Zhouqu County, Gansu Province, 990 tons of grains have been delivered to the 473 survivors, who now lived in temporary housing after a massive landslide leveled the county, leaving over 1,500 people dead in August."We are able to hold a celebration, even though we've lost everything in the landslide," said local resident Yao Shelin."We've received flour, cooking oil, and even the wok is a donation," said Yao.

BEIJING, Jan. 19 (Xinhua) -- China's central government on Wednesday called on local authorities to step up efforts to ensure a stable market supply of daily necessities, such as food and clothing, as freezing weather continues to plague south and southwest China. The Ministry of Commerce required local government departments to guide companies to increase supplies such as rice, edible oil, meat and vegetables. It also required local departments to closely watch market changes and release reserves of commodities when necessary, said a statement on its website. The statement said the government of southwest China's Chongqing Municipality has urged local supermarkets to maintain the prices of 10 types of vegetables that are affordable to the public, while authorities in the rain and snow-battered Guizhou and Hunan provinces guided logistics companies and wholesales markets to take measures to insure supplies. The Ministry of Agriculture on Wednesday also ordered local departments to expand areas for growing vegetables when conditions allow, as agricultural experts were also sent to fields to help farmers save their crops. The country's meteorological authority forecast Wednesday that over the next three days, heavy snow and icy rain would continue in provinces and municipalities including Guizhou, Hubei, Hunan, Jiangxi, and Chongqing.

BEIJING, May 24 (Xinhuanet) -- Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg welcomed more kids to join in the social network site, according to International Business Times reports on Monday. He made this comment in the NewSchools Summit in California.Zuckerberg said Facebood can help young kids to learn from each other and acquire more knowledge about using the internet."That will be a fight we take on at some point," Zuckerberg said, "My philosophy is that for education you need to start at a really, really young age." At the moment, Facebook officially does not allow the children younger than 13 to sign up, since the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) forbids children under 13 from joining an online service which collects user information data. However it recently revealed that 7.5 million Facebook users were younger than that, accoding to a study released last week by Consumer Reports. Some experts suggested Facebook may not be in any position to provide that education in its current form. "The lessons of digital citizenship have to start young, but I don't feel that Facebook is the venue to have those lessons occur. A lot of missteps happen on that site without a lot of coaching." said Dr. Gwenn O'Keeffe, an expert on young children's education.

BEIJING,March 11 (Xinhuanet) --A poor diet during pregnancy may result in health problems such as diabetes for the offspring in later life, according media reports Friday quotting a new research.Based on a study of rats, researchers from the University of Cambridge altered the protein content of the mother's diet during pregnancy as they found that rats were more vulnerable to the effects of diseases if their mothers were malnourished while they were pregnant.Further, the study also showed that an imbalanced diet in the expectant mother can compromise the long-term functioning of a gene in the child. And the gene, named Hnf4a, is believed to play a major role in the development of the pancreas and in the production of insulin. The researchers held similar mechanisms seen in the rat study could occur in humans, and that the effects might be felt by more than just the immediate offspring."What is most exciting about these findings is that we are now starting to really understand how nutrition during the first nine months of life spent in the womb shape our long term health by influencing how the cells in our body age," said Susan Ozanne, senior author of the paper and senior fellow from the Institute of Metabolic Science at the University of Cambridge. And Jeremy Pearson, associate medical director at the British Heart Foundation, said: "The reasons why are not well understood, but this study in rats adds to the evidence that a mother's diet may sometimes alter the control of certain genes in her unborn child.""It's no reason for expectant mothers to be unduly worried. This research doesn't change our advice that pregnant women should try to eat a healthy, balanced diet," he added.
