Hawaiian authorities are urging sightseers to stay away as Leilani Estates residents return to check on their neighborhood, which is threatened by lava and toxic gases emerging from fissures in the subdivision.Big Island's Kilauea volcano erupted Thursday, spewing molten rock and high levels of sulfur dioxide.Cracks emerged in the volcano's East Rift Zone — an area of fissures miles away from the volcano's summit. All residents of Leilani Estates, a community of about 1,700 people near Big Island's eastern edge, and nearby Lanipuna Gardens were ordered to evacuate. The eruption was followed by a 6.9-magnitude earthquake Friday. As of Sunday, 10 fissures had opened and 26 homes had been destroyed. The Hawaiian Volcano Observatory said that active venting of lava and hazardous fumes continued. 818

Here in the U.S., states are handling vaccine distribution in different ways. Most are going with health care workers in direct contact with COVID-19 patients first, but plans could change.“So, we need to set realistic expectations that there will be guidance that's different in different states. The guidance will evolve as we get more and more vaccines. And that doesn't mean anything's wrong or we've changed our minds, it’s just the way it's going to roll out,” said Stacy Hall, Director of Louisiana’s Public Health Immunization Program.Louisiana plans to let its hospitals and EMS distribute the first doses to their staffs. It’s a strategy not just to protect the valuable workers, but to hopefully get the public on board.“I'm really eager for them as the first group to really learn the science about the vaccine and step up and be vaccinated. I think that'll set our whole campaign in Louisiana and nationally on the right track,” said Hall.As for the cold storage of the vaccine, Louisiana doesn't see it as overly challenging. They also plan to use the state immunization information system to track who needs second doses and where the vaccine is being used most.“I want us to keep going back to that. There will be challenges and issues, but what a wonderful opportunity to make a change in the trajectory of the pandemic,” said Hall. The reality is, it will be months before the general public will get the vaccine at a pharmacy or drive thru. 1464

Here's what's happening in the political world Saturday, April 28, 2018.Trump blasts Tester over Jackson opposition-- President Trump called on Montana Democratic Sen. Jon Tester to resign over his opposition to White House physician Ronny Jackson's nomination for secretary of veterans affairs. The president blasted Tester on Twitter, saying the senator's allegations were not fair and "proving false."Allegations made by Senator Jon Tester against Admiral/Doctor Ron Jackson are proving false. The Secret Service is unable to confirm (in fact they deny) any of the phony Democrat charges which have absolutely devastated the wonderful Jackson family. Tester should resign. The.....— Donald J. HONOLULU (AP) — Hawaii is preparing for the onslaught of Hurricane Douglas, which is projected to start impacting the island state on Sunday. The storm was gradually weakening on Saturday, but officials said that shouldn't lull anyone into complacency. They expect significant impacts as the Category 1 hurricane makes its point of closest approach or possible landfall.Hurricane #Douglas Advisory 24A: Dangerous Hurricane Douglas Closing in On the Hawaiian Islands. https://t.co/mbw53QNBXE— NHC Eastern Pacific (@NHC_Pacific) July 26, 2020 Oahu is under a hurricane warning, with landfall expected as early as midday Sunday. The Big Island and Maui remained under hurricane watches.Residents of the islands are grappling with escalating numbers of coronavirus cases as the storm bears down.Hawaii has some of the lowest coronavirus infection rates in the nation, but the numbers have been rising in recent weeks. On Friday, the state reported 60 new confirmed cases, a record high.Thirteen shelters were open Sunday morning in the Honolulu area. Everyone must wear a face covering to be admitted. Also, each shelter has less capacity because of the physical distancing requirements to prevent the spread COVID-19.The pandemic was complicating preparations for the American Red Cross, which operates emergency shelters on behalf of local governments. Many volunteers who normally staff the shelters are older or have pre-existing health conditions. Many of these volunteers are thus staying home for this storm. 1518
