TAMPA, the United States, June 18 (Xinhua) -- The HIV/AIDS patients in the U.S. state of Florida are in dispute with state authorities over a proposal to impose tighter restrictions on those who qualify for drugs provided by the state's AIDS Drug Assistance Program (ADAP).According to the proposed restrictions, individuals would have to earn less than 21,000 U.S. dollars annually to qualify for ADAP drugs. If approved by the Florida Department of Health (FDH), this would affect approximately 1,150 HIV/AIDS patients."The FDH is currently looking at the number of cost containment activities, including altering the financial eligibility for ADAP services," said FDH's press secretary Jessica Hammonds. "After soliciting public input on this matter, the department is in the final stages of evaluating the matter."The Florida ADAP program serves almost 9,500 clients, each of whom receiving 8,600 dollars in funding annually, Hammonds said. There are still another 3,482 on a waiting list.Four FDH sponsored public hearings were held in April and May on the proposal to reduce HIV/AIDS funding. Two were held in Miami, one in Tampa, and the other one was held in the state capital city of Tallahassee. Over 1,000 people attended the hearings. The issue has become so ubiquitous that it caught the attention of the Elton John AIDS Foundation (EJAF), created by the popular entertainer of the same name.

BEIJING, Aug. 22 (Xinhuanet) -- U.S. presidential candidate Rick Perry's controversial stem-cell treatment may inspire desperate patients to follow his lead while causing medical and legal concerns, according to media reports Monday. The Texas governor underwent a procedure on July 1 where stem cells, made from fat taken from his body, were put into his bloodstream to see if they might find their way to fix a bad back. The treatment carries potential risks ranging from blood clots to infection to cancer and may even run afoul of federal rules, doctors say. File photo of U.S. Republican presidential candidate Texas Governor Rick Perry."As a highly influential person of power, Perry’s actions have the unfortunate potential to push desperate patients into the clinic of quacks,” Harvard’s stem cell expert George Daley told the Associated Press.Worries about the safety and wisdom of this treatment are widespread among stem cell researchers as such a treatment has not been thoroughly vetted by researchers or approved by the FDA.

BEIJING, July 25 (Xinhuanet) -- Apple is planning a third, even larger Shanghai store, as well as dozens of other stores throughout China, to cope with huge crowds at its flagship store and a branch, according to media reports Monday.Apple says its Chinese outlets -- two in Beijing and two in Shanghai -- are the four most heavily trafficked Apple stores in the world. They also generate the most revenue. Apple’s push into China shows the depth of the country’s fast-growing economy, and shows that with products not so easy to counterfeit, Chinese consumers are willing to pay a premium. For the first three quarters of Apple’s fiscal year, revenue in China and its Taiwan, Hong Kong was 8.8 billion dollars -- six times that of a year earlier. China has become the second-largest market, after the United States, for apps that run on the smartphone and tablet, according to Distimo, a Dutch company that tracks the popularity of apps.In addition, Apple has been eager to team up with state-run telecom companies, which looks after mobile phone subscriptions.
