SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A group of local doctors slammed San Diego's Board of Supervisors for not denouncing reported intimidation of the county's public health officer.The San Diego County Medical Society issued a statement, saying they are, "extremely disappointed by the failure of the Members of the San Diego County Board of Supervisors to stand up against the personal abuse, attempted intimidation and doxing of our County Public Health Officer, Dr. Wilma Wooten."SDCMS pointed specifically to public testimony at the BOS' hearing on Tuesday, during which a caller revealed Wooten's address. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A Del Mar woman wants lifeguards to put more signage up on Dog Beach that warns of riptides after her dog was dragged out to sea."As the tide goes up it fills up and as the tide goes out it flows out," Deputy Lifeguard Chief Lifeguard Mark Rathsam said, describing the movement of water between the San Dieguito Lagoon and the ocean."If you get caught in that you're gone," said Mark Waters, a long-time surfer and volunteer surf club coach at Westview High School.On Wednesday, Joanne Goss took her 4-year-old Dachshund Hank and her rescued chocolate Labrador to the beach. A large dog started playing with her Lab as they were walking toward the ocean, steering clear of the fast flowing river below.The owner of the big dog tried to get his dog's attention. "When he threw the ball, the Mastiff ran, the Lab ran and Hank ran," Goss said choking up. Hank was ripped out to sea with the current.Goss sprinted into the water, soaking her fanny pack with her phone inside. Waters saw the danger and took off."Threw off all my clothes except my shorts and just ran," he said.He swam out into the fog hoping to find the dog, and hoping he wouldn't be too late."I thought I saw him get rolled over in a wave and then I heard the sound of a drowning animal," he paused, "that just pierced right into my bones and I was just like, 'Oh my god, I've got to hurry."Swimming faster, he finally reached Hank."He was the happiest dog on the planet when that happened. He jumped up on my chest and he's up in my arms, so I kept him on my chest," Waters said.Hank was so excited he scratched Waters making him bleed. Waters said he knew the "big fish" like sharks wouldn't be in the area for an hour or so, and then he started to look around to get oriented. "I look back there's no shore, I looked in all directions, you can't see anything," said Waters.He stayed calm and laid on his back, holding Hank out of the water. He said he looked at his watch and knowing the tide, he would ride it back in in the next couple hours.Back on the beach, Goss felt sick to her stomach. "We lost sight of Mark, and I thought Mark had died," Goss said.She said she felt responsible.A friend of Waters called lifeguards. The friend comforted Goss, reassuring her Waters would be OK. Finally, they saw the rescue team return with Waters and Hank.Goss was overjoyed. She and Waters said they want more signage posted warning the public, especially visitors, of the dangers of the river.10News asked lifeguards what could be done. They said there's eight signs posted north of the river and two on the south side. Rathsam explained they don't want to post "so much that people ignore it, because that's what ends up happening, and not so little that people can't see it. So we strategically place it where it's the most visible."He also said with the huge change in the tide, it's nearly impossible to put more signage up without moving it by hand every few hours.Waters and Goss hope that by at least telling their story, they can get the word out, so their close call prevents a tragedy."It really made me feel good to save the dog, it really did and um it was probably one of the best things I've done in a long time," Waters said.Goss said she will be buying Hank a life jacket. 3279

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A broken fire hydrant sent thousands of gallons of water gushing into the air Friday, damaging home on the 5100 block of Mariner Drive, near Otay Mesa.  The home received flood damage on the first floor of the house, as well as the yard. The cars in the driveway were drenched as well.  Water was gushing from the broken hydrant for nearly 20 minutes, according to the homeowner, Gary Birtwell.  "It was coming in through the backdoor," Birtwell said. "We had about 6 inches of water in the back yard that basically filled up above the door. And it was coming in through a closed window on the side of the house. We had water that came in through the ventilation." A neighbor's security video captured what appears to be a white SUV pulling into the curb then hitting the hydrant. Water begins gushing, and the SUV takes off.  Police officers took the neighbor's security video from the scene and were looking for more footage of the incident. 1015

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A company with offices in Oceanside released data Friday supporting its drug remdesivir is helping severely ill COVID-19 patients recover.The data released by Gilead, who produces remdesivir, states there was a 62% reduction in risk of death, compared to patients who weren't given the drug, and 74% of remdesivir treated patients recovered by Day 14.Remdesivir was originally created to fight Ebola, a similar virus to COVID-19.Troy Kahle was diagnosed with COVID-19 and said he's alive today because of Kaiser Permanente doctors, nurses and remdesivir.He said he was admitted to the hospital March 14, and ended up in a coma for 12 days."The first memory I have is waking up with my hands strapped to the gurney and a tube down my throat," Kahle said he thought he was going to die and wishes no one to face what still haunts him.Friday he celebrated three months out of the hospital as a survivor of COVID-19.While the drug has helped people like Kahle, medical experts are wary."It's not a magic bullet," Molecular Biology Professor at UC San Diego Stephen Hedrick, PhD. said.He said the drug slows down the virus."It's going to decrease the severity of the symptoms of the viral infection, but it doesn't necessarily make you well overnight," he said comparing it to an antibiotic.This is because while the drug works to stop the virus from replicating, COVID-19 can counter it, "Coronaviruses, almost uniquely among RNA viruses, have an error correction capability."Survivors like Kahle, while thankful to be out of the hospital, aren't back to 100%."I get easily winded if I overexert myself, occasionally I'll get dizzy for no reason, I have foot pain when I wake up," Kahle said.Hedrick said he is optimistic, adding the drug is a good jumping off point to create a drug more suited to coronavirus, or a vaccine.In the mean-time both Kahle and Hedrick ask that we all wear our masks."If we all work together we can get to the other side of this pandemic," Kahle said.Gilead said they are ramping up supplies, "we have increased supply nearly 40-fold since January and our goal is to produce more than 2 million treatment courses by year-end and several million in 2021, if required."Gilead cautions that rigorous clinical trials are needed to confirm the latest data. 2303

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A California woman is accusing a San Diego CEO of gaining her trust and then decimating her entire life's savings. The woman, Marieme Bouguerba, is being represented by San Diego attorney Charles Field, a partner with Sanford Heisler Sharp, LLP "She's devastated. You have a single mother who lives with her parents, and she's trying to make things go and to have her entire life savings decimated like this is a major setback for her - both financially and emotionally," said Field.The lawsuit claims Mark Bernier trolls dating websites for vulnerable, high net worth women as part of his investment scams. It goes on to say he advertises himself as a licensed investment professional, attempts to build trust and confidence, and then aggressively seeks to separate the women from their money through purported investments.Bernier is listed as CEO for San Diego-based venture capital firm, VentureMoney Management Co. Field says his client met Bernier on the dating website MillionaireMatch.com, a site designed to help successful people find love. Field says Bernier has exchanged over 29,000 messages with over 3,000 women through the Millionaire Match website, to sell them worthless securities. "Well I think that's the mark of a good salesman, is that a good salesman can make a good pitch, can make a convincing pitch, and when it's backed by a legitimate looking website that has very prominent people on there, all that combined led her to believe that this was reputable," said Field.Field says Bernier scammed his client out of 0,000. While they received 0,000 back during mediation, Field says they are not being told where the rest of the money is."It seems reputable, when you look at the website it seems like he's [Bernier] trying to do good things, that's what it appears. But like I said, we asked where the money is, we asked what it was invested in, where it went, and we have not gotten any answers," said Field. Their lawsuit accuses Bernier of not even having a license to sell securities or give investment advice in California.
