SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A 91-year-old La Jolla resident is the first confirmed case of West Nile virus of the year in the county.The man was hospitalized with encephalitis in September but was confirmed Thursday to have the virus by the California Department of Public Health.He has been discharged from the hospital and is recovering, according to the county.RELATED: Community gives gift of mobility to young West Nile survivorThe man had not traveled outside of the county within the month prior to becoming ill, leading officials to believe the mosquito bite was local.Mosquitos trapped near the man's home tested negative for West Nile by the county Department of Environmental Health. Nearby residents have still been notified of the case.Last year, there were two confirmed cases of West Nile in the county, a drastic decrease from the 22 cases reported in 2016, in which two people died. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A "Day of Service" around Mission Bay will honor Maruta Gardner, the woman killed by a drunken driver while she was painting over graffiti in Mission Beach and Pacific Beach.Half a dozen service projects will take place around the bay all day Friday, Nov. 3."She was just a firecracker," said Dawn Reilly, one of the organizers with Beautiful MB. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Two San Diego County schools will receive grant funding from the Jimmie Johnson Foundation, it was announced Friday.The foundation, launched in 2006 by NASCAR driver and El Cajon-native Jimmie Johnson and his wife, Chandra Johnson, plans to award 8,000 in grants to seven public schools in the Johnsons' home states of California and Oklahoma and where they currently live in North Carolina.San Diego's Knox Middle School will receive ,206.37 to improve the school's library and WD Hall Elementary School in El Cajon will receive ,096.71 to add a multi-lingual, digital marquee to the school's campus. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A college student is suing the San Diego County Sheriff's Deputies from the Las Colinas Detention Facility after she disfigured her face while detained.The lawsuit stems from May 6, 2019. San Diego State student Tanya Suarez, 23, tried methamphetamine with a new group of friends.The document states she had psychotic delusions in a gas station parking lot, causing nearby San Diego police officers to arrest her for being under the influence of drugs.According to the lawsuit, at Las Colinas Detention Facility, while being fingerprinted, she heard another woman screaming about her eyes. That's when Suarez started to claw out her own right eye.Deputies restrained her on a gurney and cut her acrylic nails leaving them jagged.The suit claims deputies then placed her in a safety cell unrestrained. Suarez started clawing again at her right eye.She says the entire time she was screaming and saw a guard standing outside her cell filming her with an iPhone.Within five minutes she scratched both eyes out.Documents state it took another 5-10 minutes before deputies entered the cell.Suarez is now blind and, according to the lawsuit, she was known "to sleep with the lights on because she is afraid of the dark. Now she lives in complete darkness."The lawsuit states she told nurses she is bipolar and was previously hospitalized for wanting to commit suicide.Suarez's lawsuit states she is going back to finish her psychology degree at SDSU and is taking classes with the Center for the Blind; adding she wants to help others who suffer from mental illness and drug abuse.The San Diego County Sheriff's Department sent 10News the following statement: 1681

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A baby southern white rhino born this week at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park has monumental implications moving forward.Not only is the rhino calf the zoo's first successful rhino birth via artificial insemination, it's the first successful in North America for the rhino species.The calf, named Edward, was born Sunday at the zoo's Nikita Kahn Rhino Rescue Center. Edward's birth now represents the potential to bring back the rhino's relative, the northern white rhino, from the brink of extinction.RELATED: San Diego Zoo to be featured in new reality television series on Animal Planet"Not only are we thankful for a healthy calf, but this birth is significant, as it also represents a critical step in our effort to save the northern white rhino from the brink of extinction," Barbara Durrant, Henshaw endowed director of Reproductive Sciences at San Diego Zoo Global, said.Researchers hope the science behind the calf's birth can lead to a successful recovery of the genetic recovery of the northern white rhino, of which only two remain on the planet.
