RICHMOND, Va. -- Pinterest is one of the top social media platforms for swapping recipes and home ideas. It can also be another way to share information about your health."With its largely female user base, Pinterest represents an opportunity for spreading credible information and communicating about health, especially women's health issues such as breast cancer, breast cancer prevention, and screening," said Carrie A. Miller, Ph.D., M.P.H., a postdoctoral fellow at the Virginia Commonwealth University's School of Medicine Massey Cancer Center and Department of Health Behavior and Policy.Miller led the Pinterest research study looking at how breast cancer information is communicated on the social media platform.VCU researchers analyzed a sample of 500 Pinterest posts which are referred to as pins. They were collected using Pinterest keywords such as breast cancer."We focused specifically on who posted the pin, the type of visual and textual information included in the pins as well as how users engaged with those pins. Whether those posts were repinned or saved or commented on," Miller said. The research found the posts were mostly text rather than posts of several pictures. Roughly 20 percent seem to come from everyday people."Individuals, Pinterest users just like you or me were posting. Often times, personal narratives, stories about breast cancer, their personal experience with the disease," Miller said.Dr. Miller says these posts can be used to empower the reader and encourage healthcare organizations to join the conversation. She also says if you have specific questions, always have a discussion with your doctor.Miller and her team are working on other social media studies. One study will look at genetic testing on Pinterest. A third study will examine triple-negative breast cancer on Instagram. This story was originally reported by Reba Hollingsworth at WTVR. 1902

Gas tax increaseBeginning July 1, 2019, California’s gas tax is set to rise again by nearly 6 cents per gallon. SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — California Gov. Gavin Newsom says the state must do more to protect essential workers, many of whom are Latino, from the economic and health harms of the coronavirus. Newsom on Friday said he'll work with the Legislature to expand protections against evictions and expand workers compensation and paid sick leave. He enacted similar policies through executive order earlier this year but many expired or will soon. Latinos make up 39% of California’s population but 55% of confirmed positive coronavirus cases, according to state data. Newsom said the majority of farm workers, construction workers, cooks, food prep workers, truck drivers, cashiers and janitors are Latino. 708

RUTHERFORD COUNTY, North Carolina — A teen who shot and killed her mother's boyfriend will not be charged, authorities said. The Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office and the District Attorney’s Office said on Aug. 8, Chandra Nierman's 15-year-old daughter shot the 46-year-old male as he was attacking Nierman. Her other children, a 12-year-old son, and a 16-year-old daughter were there when the violence occurred. Sheriff's deputies said the man was threatening to "cut Nierman’s throat and kill everyone in the house."A release from authorities said:"Nierman’s twelve-year-old son retrieved a firearm and Nierman’s fifteen-year-old daughter took the gun from her brother and fired it twice, striking the deceased male in the chest. One of the fired rounds fragmented, grazing Nierman’s sixteen-year-old daughter in the leg."The 16-year-old was taken to a hospital and was released."Nierman suffered significant bruises and contusions from the assault," the release said. The investigation also revealed the deceased man had threatened Nierman several times previously, and four days before, he had assaulted Nierman and fired multiple rounds from a firearm inside the residence to threaten and terrorize her."The investigation further revealed that the deceased male, who had multiple firearms in the house and frequently carried one on his person, was a convicted felon and had two active domestic violence protection orders against him from two different women in Indiana and Ohio, although no domestic violence or assaults had been reported to law enforcement locally prior to the fatal shooting," the release said. "The deceased male has been positively identified as Steven Kelley, originally from Indiana."Based on the facts and the evidence, "it is the conclusion of the District Attorney’s Office that the shooting was justified and no charges will be filed," the release states. 1903

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — California lawmakers are setting up a task force to study and make recommendations for reparations to African Americans, particularly the descendants of slaves, as the nation struggles again with civil rights and unrest following the latest shooting of a Black man by police. The state Senate supported creating the nine-member commission on a bipartisan vote Saturday. The measure returns to the Assembly for final consideration. It would require the task force to study the impact of slavery in California and recommend to the Legislature by July 2023 the form of compensation that should be awarded, how it should be awarded, and who should be should be eligible for compensation. 717
