SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - An inmate at R.J. Donovan State Prison has filed a lawsuit against the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.Anand Jon Alexander filed the complaint on Monday, alleging prison officials failed to keep him safe and to provide adequate medical care after he was assaulted behind bars.In the complaint, Alexander claims he was attacked by another inmate while waiting to make a phone call on May 18, 2019. He was allegedly stabbed multiple times in the face and kicked on the ground.After the attack he sustained “five facial fractures, a lower orbital floor blowout, sinus and nasal fractures, a deviated septum, a 50% abrasion to the right cornea, long term impairment of his vision and respiration, serious nerve damage, PTSD” according to the complaint.Alexander is 12 years in to a 59 year sentence after he was convicted of rape in 2008.An up and coming fashion designer, Alexander had been featured on “America’s Next Top Model” and was listed in Newsweek’s “Who’s Next in 2007.”But his career was put on hold after being accused by multiple women of sexual assault.Many of the charges were dropped, but he was convicted on one count of rape and 15 other counts following a trial in Los Angeles. The jury found him not guilty or were hung on several other counts.Alexander has maintained his innocence. In the complaint, his lawyer writes he “has acknowledged the existence of blurred lines between his personal and professional relationships…Nevertheless, he holds steadfast to his innocence.”The American Justice Alliance, a group which seeks to free prisoners who have been wrongfully convicted, submitted an amicus brief to the Federal Central District Court.In it, they wrote Alexander “was targeted by a collusion of disgruntled business associates and some former girlfriends, who have admitted they were out to “bring him down,” and “get revenge,” seeking notoriety and monetary benefits. He was then subject to a prosecution and trial riddled with extraordinary police misconduct.”The lawsuit names CDCR as well as Marcus Pollard, the Warden of R.J. Donovan Correctional Facility and Daniel Paramo, the former Warden.It alleges prison officials failed to protect Alexander from harm and after he was injured gave “deliberate indifference to Mr. Alexander’s medical condition.”They are seeking unspecified monetary damages and a jury trial.So far, no criminal charges have been filed against the assailant. 10News reached out to CDCR for comment but had not heard back before the story was published. 2557

According to the San Diego Gas and Electric outage map, 1774 people in Old Town, Mission Hills and Hillcrest were affected by the outage. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Albertsons LLC, Safeway Inc., and The Vons Companies, Inc. have agreed to pay at least 0,000 after an investigation by the state Department of Alcohol Beverage Control (ABC) over illegal business practices.The investigation stemmed from the grocery stores' "Monopoly" game promotion, in which customers received "Monopoly" coupons toward discounts and potentially prizes. ABC said the violations arose out of sales of alcohol included in the 2018 promotion.The "Monopoly" promotion was held at Albertsons stores, including Albertsons, Safeway, Vons, Pac N Save, and Pavilions locations.The promotion advertised certain beer brands by MillerCoors as part of the game. Customers received additional chances to win prizes if they purchased those brands, according to ABC."This particular violation gave these retailers a competitive advantage by offering consumers a gift or premium for purchasing alcoholic beverage products," ABC Director Jacob Appelsmith said in a release.ABC filed action against nearly 600 stores across California, accusing the companies of violation several regulations. The agency says the "California Alcoholic Beverage Control Act prohibits the giving away of premiums, gifts or free goods in connection with the sale or marketing of alcoholic beverages."The act prevents alcohol companies from engaging in anti-competitive behavior and gaining an unfair advantage.As part of the probe, the three companies agreed to pay 0,000 in fines, 0,000 due within 30 days and the remaining 0,000 stayed on the condition the companies violate the similar regulations over the next two years. 1643

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A Southern California photography company promised parents beautiful photos of their children with unicorns. Instead, numerous parents told Team 10 they did not get what they paid for. Connie Guzman is one of those parents. When she saw a chance for a unicorn photo shoot for her only child Amelia, she was in.“My daughter’s fourth birthday was coming up. She’s super big into unicorns right now,” Guzman said. She said she paid a deposit through Venmo, with the total being 9 to Elle Alexandra Photography. The photo shoot took place on September 22.“My album was never posted, so then I emailed her. I waited about a week. No response,” Guzman said during Team 10’s interview on October 24th.Guzman said she did not get her photos in time for her daughter’s birthday. According to the agreement sent by Elle Alexandra Photography, pictures would be received within 21 days. The agreement Guzman showed Team 10 said: “Please allow up to 21 days for the final photos to be delivered to you. If your child has a birthday or needs a rush order for their photos, we will do our best to accommodate you. Just let us know what the special day is and we’ll work on getting them to you by that date!” “Very disappointed,” Guzman said. “That’s what we always want for our daughters—to give them those happy moments and those memories and I just really felt like she took those memories away.”Elle Alexandra Photography’s website said it is based out of Temecula. The clients said the photographer was Lesa Childress, who worked with her sister, Kayla.Another parent found herself in a similar situation as Guzman. Nish, who declined to use her last name, said she waited for her photos after her daughter’s unicorn photo shoot on July 28th. At first, the photographer said she already emailed them.“I’m like, looking through the spam… no, I don’t have anything,” Nish said. Then, she got a different story.“[She said] something went terribly wrong and we lost your baby pictures,” Nish said. She was told the photos were lost while evacuating the Holy Fire in Orange and Riverside Counties earlier this summer.“She said she was in a hurry to evacuate and then she just disconnected everything, unplugged everything,” Nish said. Nish said Elle Alexandra Photography offered a re-shoot on August 26th, but the photographer never showed up. She said she finally got a partial refund on September 8th and some photos, but not the ones she paid for. Those were the solo shots of her daughter on the unicorn.“It’s not about the 5. It’s about what’s right, and this is not right,” Nish said.“It just makes me so angry that there’s someone out there that’s taking advantage of these moms that work so hard and love their children,” said San Diego mother, Kerra Alimbuyao. She said she did this just a couple hours after she booked it. “She was refusing to give me my money back,” Alimbuyao said. She said there was no mention of a non-refundable deposit.In all, Team 10 spoke to six people who had issues with Elle Alexandra Photography. One mom, in an email, said it was “one excuse after another” as to why she did not get pictures in time. A vendor and a separate photographer also said they did not get paid for helping with the photography business and that Lesa Childress owes the money.Team 10 reached Childress through Facebook Messenger. She sent several long messages explaining her side of the story. Childress said every person she worked with received their photos, “and if not, they either didn’t show up, they canceled their [appointment], or didn’t reschedule.”When asked about Connie Guzman, she first wrote: “that name doesn’t ring a bell.” She later said Guzman received her photos last month and showed screenshots to prove it. Guzman said that is not true. She found her photos were available on the website accessible to customers only after Team 10 got involved.Childress admitted she “got busy too quickly” and was “in over [her] head.” “I was not prepared to take on a hundred clients with just myself,” Childress wrote. However, she claimed she is the victim with people attacking her online when their photos were not ready on time. She said while photos sometimes went out late, “they always went out.” Childress said she has shut down her business.Local moms said they want to warn others, so a similar situation does not happen to others.“Definitely do your research,” Guzman said.“People will target families right now, and they know that people love their kids and will do anything for their kids,” Alimbuyao added. “I think that’s the tool that she used.” 4729

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A San Diego restaurant group is turning to an old trend to try to make it through the latest shutdown order.The order, which went into effect Monday, relegated restaurants to takeout and delivery only, decimating their bottom line and forcing them to cut jobs and reduce hours."Right now the way it's been, it's not profitable," said Alex Navarrete, general manager of Karina's restaurant group. "We're giving everybody one shifts, two shifts, but what is that going to do?"Karina's restaurant group has nine establishments around the county. Prior to the pandemic, it had dozens of workers at each location. Now, it has four workers on the clock at anytime at each. "They all want to work, I just don't have hours now, since we're only doing takeout," Navarrete said. Navarette is now trying to go above and beyond for his company and his employees - even as his options are limited. Four of the group's restaurants -- two in the Otay Ranch mall, and others in Chula Vista and La Jolla -- will try to take advantage of their parking lots. They're essentially turning into car hops, where patrons get their food delivered to their cars and eat in the parking lot. "This would be a perfect time to get that cobwebs off the motor home and bring it out, bring the family out," he said. Curbside pickup for restaurant food is nothing new, but the Karina's group is eyeing making it more festive, with potentiality live music or a DJ outdoors at its two restaurants in the Otay Ranch Mall - Karina's Mexican Seafood and Savoie Italian Eatery. Navaraette said by staying and eating in the car, guests could order their food in courses, so the tacos and other entrees don't get soggy.
